Former Wolf shines big in Sunshine State

She finished at the highest level.

Former Coupeville superstar Savina Wells capped her high school sports career Friday, competing in two events at the FHSAA Class 2A State Track and Field Championships in Jacksonville, Florida.

The younger sister of CHS grads Ulrik and Izzy is a senior at Fernandina Beach High School.

Coming off of a pair of third place finishes at regionals May 2 in Pensacola, Savina was in the mix for javelin and high jump glory at the state meet.

She opened Friday by chucking her javelin 94 feet, one inch.

Wells, who earned an 8th place medal at state in the high jump as a junior, wasn’t able to repeat as a senior, but exits holding Fernandina’s school record.

She cleared the bar at five feet, three inches in March.

Before moving to Florida with her family after her freshman year, Lyle and Katy’s daughter was a vibrant part of a tight-knit, talented group of young women who played multiple sports in Coupeville.

She was a standout from preschool on, eventually playing two years of varsity basketball for CHS, including being a starter as just an 8th grader.

On the softball diamond, Savina was a catcher for the varsity team as a freshman, hauling in pitches from her big sis.

During her time at Fernandina, she has played volleyball, basketball, and track and field.

Former Wolf soars to school record

She’s leaving her mark.

Coming off another strong season on the hardwood, former Coupeville supernova Savina Wells kicked off her final track and field season in Florida by breaking a school record.

The Fernandina High School senior recently cleared the bar in the high jump at five feet, three inches, beating her own PR by three inches.

Back in Cow Town, where Wells played multiple sports from preschool through her freshman year, the Coupeville High School record for girls in the event is 5-02, jointly held by Yashmeen Knox and Ryanne Knoblich.

The youngest of Lyle and Katy’s three children, Savina followed in the footsteps of older siblings Ulrik and Izzy and was a key part of a very-successful group of female athletes slated to graduate this spring.

She played two seasons of varsity basketball for CHS, starting as an 8th grader, and departed for Florida in a family move after her freshman season of softball, where she operated as a catcher, hauling in pitches from her big sis.

At Fernandina, the youngest Wells has played volleyball, basketball, and track and field.

Former Wolf sparkles on Florida hardwood

Savina Wells continues to be a baller.

The former Coupeville supernova is midway through her third, and final basketball season at Florida’s Fernandina Beach High School, where she leads the Pirates in scoring, rebounds, and blocked shots.

The six-foot-one senior, who was a Wolf from birth through her freshman year, played varsity basketball and softball during her short stint at CHS.

Following in the footsteps of older siblings Ulrik and Izzy, who both graduated from Coupeville schools, Savina tallied 133 points across two seasons of varsity basketball, playing as an 8th and 9th grader for the Wolves.

After a family move to the Sunshine State, the youngest of Lyle and Katy’s three children has participated in volleyball, basketball, and track and field at her current school.

Fernandina Beach is off to a 6-5 start this season on the hardwood, with Savina racking up 130 points, 118 rebounds, 23 blocks, 13 steals, and five assists.

She’s averaging 11.8 points and 10.7 boards a night for the Pirates, who kick off the second half of their season Tuesday with a road trip to Gainesville.

Savina has poured in 540 points across 46 games in a Fernandina uniform, giving her 673 for her high school career.

She finished her season with a flourish.

Outperforming her seed by five spots, Fernandina Beach High School junior Savina Wells claimed eighth place in the high jump Thursday at the FHSAA Class 2A State Track and Field Championships in Florida.

She was one of three Pirates to compete at state, and one of two to score points, joining javelin chucker Luke Twardy.

The former Coupeville supernova tied her season-best mark with a jump of four feet, 11.75 inches, barely missing her PR, which stands at 5-00 from her sophomore campaign.

Wells, who grew up playing multiple sports on Central Whidbey’s prairie, earned her ticket to state by winning a jump-off at regionals May 7, after finishing in a three-way tie for second place.

Along with the high jump, she also competed in the javelin, discus, and long jump this season, finishing fifth in the first of those events at regionals.

This was Wells second season of track at Fernandina Beach, and her first trip to state.

She also plays volleyball and basketball for the Pirates.

Ulrik and Izzy’s younger sister, sometimes referred to as “The Chosen One” by Cow Town sports bloggers back in the day, was a four-sport sensation as a young Wolf, also ripping up the softball field.

Coupeville’s loss became Florida’s gain when she and her family moved to the Sunshine State after her freshman year.

Savina Wells is touching the sky in Florida.

The former Coupeville standout, now a junior at Fernandina Beach High School, is off to a stellar start to her latest track and field season.

Wells has swept to titles in all three meets where she’s participated in the high jump, with a season-best of four feet, 11.75 inches in her most-recent outing.

Her PR of 5-00 from her sophomore season would have her sitting just shy of the girls’ school record of 5-02 — jointly held by Yashmeen Knox and Ryanne Knoblich — if she still lived in Cow Town.

Wells also has a second place and a pair of third-place performances in the javelin this season, while also competing in the discus and long jump.

The younger sister of Coupeville grads Ulrik and Izzy, Savina excelled at every sport she played while growing up on Whidbey, before the family moved to the Sunshine State after her freshman year.

At Fernandina Beach, “The Chosen One” (a nickname I can use if she lives in another state) has played volleyball and basketball in addition to spending time around the track oval.
