They are the present, and the future, of Wolf sports.

CHS sophomores Jacob Martin and Gabe Wynn, who share a birthday today, are among the brightest stars on the Cow Town scene these days.

During football season, #32 (Martin) and #33 (Wynn) were a hard-hittin’ duo on defense who also piled up some serious yardage on offense.

As they move into their junior seasons, those numbers should only increase.

Wynn is also a hoops stud (he saw varsity playing time as early as his freshman year) and baseball player who is following in the prodigious athletic footsteps of his mom, Robyn (Seth) Myers, a former standout at Oak Harbor.

Which is all fine and good, but the duo also stand tall as two of the classier dudes to rep the red and black.

Watch either one in practice, or in how they respond to their coaches when given instruction, and you will see two young men who represent the best of what Wolf Nation would hope for their athletes to be.

As Jacob and Gabe celebrate their birthdays today, take a quick moment to wish them the best.

They have earned it.

The best in a very, very long time.

While a 50-44 loss in overtime to Seattle Christian at the district playoffs Wednesday knocked the CHS girls’ basketball team from the postseason, their success in 2014-2015 will linger on.

The Wolves, led by a splendid six-pack of seniors and the slam dunk MVP of the Olympic League (junior Makana Stone), went 15-7.

No CHS girls’ squad had won that many games in a decade-plus, and the Wolves also won the school’s first league title since 2002.

We’ll have a full story up later on the final game (coach David King has to put in some hours at his day job first), but here are 11 snappy behind-the-scenes photos to give you a feel for the finale.

Thank you to Amy King, Robyn Myers and Tiffany Briscoe for their exclusive pics.

And to the Wolves — Julia Myers, Monica Vidoni, Kacie Kiel, Wynter Thorne, Hailey Hammer, McKenzie Bailey, Mia Littlejohn, Madeline Strasburg, Kailey Kellner and Stone — you had an amazing season.

There will be sadness right now, but later, when you get a chance to look back at all you accomplished — when you hang that banner, when you tell your own children about it some day — you will be justifiably proud.

You put the roar back in Wolf basketball. Well done, ladies, from all of us.

Gabe Wynn has big news. “Dude, there’s a snack machine IN THE GYM!!” (ST)

The mission was simple, and it worked.

With the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team on the road in Puyallup Saturday for their playoff opener, I put the word out — get me photos.

Action? Great. Behind the scenes? Excellent.

The eight pics above, courtesy four different photographers, capture some of the many facets of the game that were on display, on the court and off.

Now, the challenge goes out to the Wolf girls and their fans, parents and hanger-ons.

Monday, the league champs will take their 15-5 record to Sumner High School for a rematch with Bellevue Christian, a team they lost a 52-51 gut-wrencher to Dec. 6.

Get your cameras out. Your phones out. Maybe get a pencil and draw something.

I want it.

Players getting ready. Eating their pre-game meal. On the bus. Selfies. Whatever.

I have huge faith in these Wolf girls, who love having their photos taken as much as any group I have ever seen.

Make me proud, ladies.

Hunter Smith

Hunter Smith went for 13 in Coupeville’s win Tuesday. (John Fisken photo)

Once they got their sea legs back, they were fine.

After a bit of a rough start in the first half Tuesday (maybe the aftereffects of riding the ferry to Port Townsend), the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad dominated, throwing down 34 second-half points en route to a 48-39 victory.

The win gave the Wolves a three-game season sweep of the Redhawks, while snapping a two-game losing skid.

The CHS young guns are 7-9 overall, 4-3 in Olympic League play with two to go.

When they did lock on to the basket, the Wolves got scoring from up and down their bench, with nine different players putting their name in the scoring column.

Hunter Smith led the way, dropping 13, while Dante Mitchell (10), Gabe Wynn (9) and DeAndre Mitchell (8) all got hot as well.

Brian Shank (2), Joey Lippo (2), Ethan Spark (2), Hunter Downes (1) and Desmond Bell (1) rounded out the offensive attack.

The mighty, mighty Mitchell brothers combined to haul down 18 rebounds and block four shots, while Dante pilfered seven steals to go with his 10 boards.

Shank (six boards, two blocks), Wynn (three boards, two steals), Bell (three boards), Downes (three boards) and Smith (two steals) were also busy.

Aaron Trumbull’s coming in hot.

It was a good old-fashioned hardwood war.

When Klahowya came to Whidbey Friday to face the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad in the first 1A Olympic League game of the season, it was a back-and-forth affair not decided until the final two seconds.

And while the Eagles escaped back to their bus with a two-point win, Wolf fans can console themselves by gazing upon some of the photos snapped that night by travelin’ photo man John Fisken.
