Kylee Johnson

Coupeville Elementary School 4th grader Kylee Johnson continues to soar in the gymnastics world.

Her most recent accomplishment came this past weekend at the state championships in Everett, where she competed at level 5 in trampoline and tumbling.

Johnson earned first place in both floor and trampoline, while also notching a second place showing in the double mini.

That propels her to nationals, which will be held in Texas in July.

Before that Johnson is off to Salt Lake City for regionals.

“She has been working hard on her skills,” said mom Shannon Johnson.

“We are very proud of her accomplishments and looking forward to what she will do in the future.”

Two of Whidbey’s best are vaulting into the big time.

Coupeville’s Kaia Crebbin and Ryanne Knoblich compete Thursday at a regional gymnastics meet in Las Vegas, with an eye on returning to Nevada in July for nationals.

The duo, who compete in trampoline and tumbling, started as teammates before Crebbin moved from the Island Flyers to Ground Zero Gymnastics out of Mount Vernon.

Reuniting on the big stage is a thrill for both of them.

“Even though they are no longer on the same team, Ryanne loves supporting Kaia,” said mom Mariah Knoblich. “They’ve tumbled together since she first made the team, and are happy to be back in any gym together.”

Crebbin is an 8th grader at Coupeville Middle School, while Knoblich is a 7th grader.

Both come from athletic families, with siblings (Jaelyn Crebbin, Gavin Knoblich) who are currently playing sports for the Wolves.

Kaia and Ryanne have put in long hours training, both starting gymnastics when they were third-graders.

It’s paid off, with the duo racking up awards all the way up to the state level.

Knoblich was a two-time state champ in Level 6 (ages 13-14) this year, winning titles in both trampoline and double mini (trampoline).

She claimed a second, third and fifth her last time at regionals and is on the hunt for gold this time around, said her mom.

Crebbin also emerged from the state meet as a two-time winner, competing in Level 7 (ages 13-14) in tumbling and double mini. She also had a second for trampoline in Level 6.

Kaia, who has qualified for nationals in both the trampoline and double mini, wants to make it three-for-three by advancing in tumbling as well.

“Tumbling is her favorite event,” said mom Toni Crebbin. “She has really been working hard on her tumbling event and hopes to make that score as well, since we plan on going (to Reno) in July (for nationals).”

It’s about more than trophies and medals for the Coupeville duo, though.

Mariah Knoblich sums it up nicely, with an assist from her daughter.

“She like gymnastics so much, and I quote – “Because I love it, and there’s kinda a thrill flying in the air!”

Lauren Bayne picks things up quickly.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grader is a multiple sport athlete, like older brother Josh, a star football and baseball player at the high school level.

And, like her sibling, she seems to do well at any sport she picks up.

Case in point, basketball.

While she had played on a rec team when she was little, that team never actually played any games. Jump forward to this year, she chose to return to the hardwood, and bam, has made an immediate impact.

“This year was the first year that I ever played in a game, and I’m on the 8th grade varsity team!,” Bayne said. “I like to exercise and sports are always fun things to do, which is why I started this year.”

Helping her succeed is a natural sense of drive.

“I’m a competitive person, and like to push myself to do new things,” Bayne said. “It is always fun for me, whether we lose or win.”

While she’s not sure if she’ll stick with the sport when she moves up to high school — she also plays volleyball, runs track and is on a competitive gymnastics team outside of school — she’s intent on building her game as this season plays out.

“I want to play hard and improve my all-around skills,” Bayne said. “I think that I am a team player, and can play many positions — except post, because I’m not that tall. I need to work on my ball handling skills and shooting.”

When not playing one of her many sports, she enjoys geometry and gym class.

Following in the successful athletic footsteps of her brother, a junior at CHS, comes naturally to her. Having him, and her parents, to help and support her, is a key.

“My brother Josh is very good at a lot of sports, and my whole family is active,” Bayne said. “It is usual for me to play multiple sports, and get good grades, because of my help from family and friends.”
