Canada is the place to go if you’re serious about being a top-level hammer thrower, eh.

Coupeville grad Logan Martin, now a sophomore at Central Washington University, continues to work year-round in his pursuit of excellence, and that sent him to Langley, British Columbia last weekend.

Dad Bob, who coaches the CHS track team, was supposed to go along for the trip, but the family dog brought that to a skidding halt, eating the elder Martin’s passport.

Rumors abound that papa, a former Marine Drill Sergeant, is currently making the persnickety pooch run laps.

Is the hangdog hound dog responding by doing a note-perfection imitation of Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman, whining “I got nowhere else to go!”

One can only hope so.

World champ Ethan Katzberg informs Martin all of his power comes from his ‘stache.

Meanwhile, back in reality, Logan Martin spent his time in maple syrup country training with world champion hammer throwers Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers, as well as coaches Dylan Armstrong and Garrett Collier.

The first of those coaches is a former Olympian who trained with the sport’s top guru, Dr. Anatolij Bondarčuk, while the latter mentors throwers at the University of British Columbia.

Along with the chance to train with top-level hammer chuckers, Logan Martin also inspired his own throwing coach, Martin Bingisser, to put together a podcast on the subject for his massive HMMR Media network.

That reunited Bingisser, an 11-time national champ, with Armstrong, as the pair were training partners in the old days.

Working with the big boys.

Call it the Martin and Martin Show.

Coupeville grad Logan Martin, now a track and field star at Central Washington University, recently got a chance to meet and throw with Martin Bingisser, Switzerland’s national hammer throw coach.

A former All-American at the University of Washington, he’s an 11-time national champion in the sport who is also a lawyer and founder of HMMR Media – a leading online resource for throwers.

Bingisser is a busy man but has family in Bellingham and makes the trek from Switzerland every two years.

Enter the ever-resourceful Martin, who used email and Instagram to convince the legendary thrower he should meet up with his #1 fan when in Washington state.

“I was quite the pest, but it paid off!” Martin said with a laugh.

The duo, along with Logan’s dad, Coupeville High School track and field coach Bob Martin, met up at Western Washington University.

“It was very surreal when I was able to shake his hand and hang out with him for the day,” Logan Martin said.

“I see him as a living legend and quite literally everything he said was gold.”

While achieving his own success, Bingisser was coached by Anatoliy Bondarchuk, an Olympic gold medalist in 1972 who has gone on to mentor an incredible string of world record holders.

During his own rise in the sport, adding the hammer throw to the shotput and discus as a high school athlete, Logan Martin has been a relentless worker, both in the practice circle and reading about the sport.

A lot of that research came directly from Bingisser’s writing.

“After digging a little bit, I found that 90% of the hundreds of pages that I’ve printed out and filed, were written by Martin, which was really cool,” Logan Martin said.

During his time at CHS, Dalton’s younger brother played soccer, tennis, basketball, and track, claiming 2nd place at state in all three of his throwing events.

Logan Martin then made the jump to college track and field, earning All-West Region honors in the hammer throw as a CWU freshman this spring.

With his sophomore campaign looming ahead of him, the work continues.

Getting to spend valuable time with one of the best the sport has ever seen is invaluable.

“I was able to take away a whole new perspective on myself as an athlete and my throw,” Logan Martin said.

“And also, two notebook pages that are filled with chicken scratch from that session,” he added with a laugh.

Further and further away, the implement flies.

Despite adding the hammer throw to her repertoire late in her senior year, Coupeville track star Taygin Jump has shown amazing progression.

The first time the Wolf thrower let fly in a competition, back on April 28, she chucked it 56 feet, eight inches.

Move forward a month, and Jump launched the hammer 88-02 Sunday at the 23rd Washington State High School Hammer Championships at Evergreen State College.

She finished 21st overall in the girl’s competition.

The event, which came on the heels of the WIAA sanctioned state and field championships in Yakima, drew throwers from 24 schools ranging from 4A-2B.

Coupeville and Adna were the smallest schools represented, with 16 schools hailing from the 4A and 3A classifications.

This is the second year in a row the Wolves sent a competitor to the hammer throw championships, with Logan Martin finishing 2nd in the boys competition last year as a senior.

Jump, who competed in the 800, 1600, discus, hammer, and javelin as a senior, recently signed a letter of intent to continue her track exploits at SUNY Plattsburgh, an NCAA D-III school.

The hammer thrower is sort like a gunfighter in western movies.

He, or she, wanders from town to town, looking for someone who will meet them in a showdown far off the beaten path, then exits stage left, off to follow the road less taken.

With their event not part of the sanctioned Washington state high school championship meet, hammer throwers have to compete where they can.

It’s a sometimes-lonely trek currently waged by Coupeville High School senior Taygin Jump, who is supplementing her regular season track and field exploits with some side duels.

Her latest performance came last weekend at the Olympia Hammer Series, held at the Evergreen State College.

While there, Jump claimed 4th place in the open event, chucking the hammer 58 feet, 10 inches to net a PR in the event.

She also finished 11th in the varsity finals, netting a 52-08.

It was the second time this season Jump has competed in the hammer, coming on the heels of an appearance at the Sunny and 70’s meet in Snohomish.

The two-sport star, who also plays school and club volleyball, has competed in the 800, 1600, discus, javelin, and hammer this season.

Another day, another milestone.

Coupeville grad Logan Martin nailed a PR in the hammer throw Saturday at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational in Bellingham.

Now a freshman at Central Washington University, the throwing ace finished 3rd out of 16 competitors, launching the implement 178 feet, seven inches.

Martin also came back around to claim 7th in the discus (out of 21 dudes), with his throw slamming back to Earth at the 136-11 mark.

Overall, he picked up eight points for the Wildcats.

During his time at CHS, Martin played soccer, tennis, and basketball in addition to earning three state meet medals for the track and field team.

He was a key part of a senior class which led the Wolf boys’ basketball team to an undefeated 16-0 regular season, league title, district title, and trip to the state tourney in 2022.
