The best is back.

Recovering from a sore knee that kept her out of action, Coupeville High School sophomore sensation Makana Stone brought the subtle swagger back to the track oval Saturday. Then she brought the big city girls to their knees.

Busting out a PR, she lit up the field in the 400 at the 6th Annual BCS Invite in Juanita, slappin’ down all 21 girls who dared to line up across from her.

Her time of 59.75 seconds was more than a full second ahead of Shoreline Christian senior Natalie McPherson.

McPherson evened the duel a bit, nipping Stone by .11 of a second in the 200.

And this is no second-rate competition, as McPherson finished in the top four in both events at state as a junior. Stone’s time in the 400 is the second-fastest of any 1A runner this season.

Away from the track, the brightest day may have belonged to Wolf freshman Skyler Lawrence, who set PRs in both the shot put and discus.

Her fourth-place showing in the shot put tied with Jared Helmstadter (400) and Brandon Kelley (300 hurdles) for the best performances by a Wolf, non-Stone division.

Coupeville finished 12th out of 18 teams in the boys’ competition and 11th out of 19 teams on the girls’ side of the battle.

It was like death by a thousand paper cuts.

Time and again, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team would pull close to visiting Granite Falls Tuesday night, only to then watch the Tigers go off on another mini-rally.

Six points here, five points there, another six points, and eventually it was too much to overcome, even on a night when sophomore Jared Helmstadter put together the best one-player scoring effort of any Wolf this season, boy or girl, JV or varsity.

Scoring in every quarter, with a mix of smooth jumpers and tough buckets off of big rebounds, Helmstadter threw down 22 points in a 79-55 Cascade Conference loss.

Stamping his feet emphatically on the hardwood when he would come to a screeching halt on the fast break, then whipping upwards and sinking another soft shot, he drained four, seven, seven and four points over the course of the four quarters.

Helmstadter was still fighting long after the game was decided. His final points came off of a pair of free throws after he was fouled while ripping down an offensive rebound with under 10 seconds to play.

After a horrifying start, in which they fell behind 12-1, the Wolves regrouped and made it a close game for two-plus quarters.

Coupeville got within four midway through the second quarter when DeAndre Mitchell drained a jumper, than started the third quarter off with a bang.

Down 39-30 at the break, the Wolves opened with a three-point play from Helmstadter, who converted an in-bounds pass into a bucket and free throw. When CJ Smith hit a runner in the paint, CHS was within 41-35.

But once again Granite Falls put together a quick, efficient run, and this one was the killer. An 11-2 surge capped with a long three-pointer, it stretched the lead out too far for the Wolves to continue cutting into.

DeAndre Mitchell backed up Helmstadter with seven points, while Smith, Gabe Wynn and Dante Mitchell each scorched the nets for six.

Oscar Liquidano popped for three, Clay Reilly and Grey Rische each netted a bucket and Isaac Vargas tickled the twine for a free throw to round out the scoring attack.

Now it’s a winning streak.

Playing an inspired middle two quarters Tuesday night, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team bounced visiting Sultan 44-32 to claim its second straight victory.

Getting points from eight different players, the 1A Wolves went toe-to-toe with the 2A Turks and never backed down.

Instead it was Coupeville going strong to the hoop most of the time, with Jared Helmstadter and the Mitchell brothers, Dante and DeAndre, consistently getting in the paint and putting the ball in the hoop.

The trio combined for 29 points, topped by Helmstadter‘s 12. The sophomore was a consistent threat all night, scoring in all four quarters, including two key buckets during a game-clinching run in the fourth.

Sultan had ripped off five straight points to open the final quarter, cutting Coupeville’s lead to six.

Instead of panicking, the Wolves ramped up the speed of their attack and the Turks crumbled, as Coupeville used an 11-2 spurt to claim control of the outcome.

Helmstadter and Dante Mitchell threw down four points apiece during the run, while DeAndre Mitchell popped for a bucket and Brian Shank slid a free throw through the net that kicked off the rally.

The Wolves scored the game’s first bucket — a pull-up jumper from Helmstadter — and led most of the way.

With Oscar Liquidano scoring in the paint off of rebounds and CJ Smith, Clay Reilly and Gabe Wynn setting up their teammates with precision passes, Coupeville forced the flow of the action most of the way.

The start of the game was bumped back a few minutes after a fire alarm went off right before tip-off, forcing the gym to be cleared.

Basically the flashing lights and sirens could have been a victory celebration, just 32 minutes early.
