Win, bow, and exit

Cold-blooded closers.

Scoring almost half their points in the fourth quarter Friday, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball players exited as winners.

Holding off host Friday Harbor 41-38, the young Wolves wrap an 8-8 season full of great promise.

Kassie O’Neil’s squad reps a 2B school, but they played seven games against 1A, 2A, or 3A teams this season, finishing a solid 3-4 against big-school rivals.

Friday’s rumble pitted the Wolves against a fellow 2B team, and one which beat them the first time around.

Revenge was in the air, and it was fueled by Madison McMillan, who was a mad bomber, dropping a pair of three-balls during an eight-point explosion in the fourth quarter.

Coupeville squeaked out to a 10-9 lead by the first break, ever so slightly stretched the lead to 20-17 at the half, then had its only cold shooting stretch of the night in the third frame.

Not that Friday Harbor was lighting up the rim, either, as the Wolverines used a 6-3 mini-run to knot things up at 23-23.

Then, in the snap of the net flipping high, the rivals went off down the stretch, combining to rain down 33 of the night’s 79 points across the final eight minutes.

McMillan was on fire, but she got help, with Skylar Parker, Kierra Thayer, Teagan Calkins, and Desi Ramirez-Vasquez also scoring in the fourth quarter.

Coupeville spread its offense out, with 10 different players banking in shots.

McMillan led the way with a game-high 12 points, with Thayer (7), Calkins (6), Skylar Parker (6), Kayla Arnold (2), Bryley Gilbert (2), Reese Wilkinson (2), Jada Heaton (2), Carlota Marcos-Cabrillo (1), and Ramirez-Vasquez (1) also scoring.

Kassidy Upchurch, Brynn Parker, and Liza Zustiak rounded out the roster for O’Neil, the former Wolf hoops star in her first season as JV coach.

Burn the nets to the final bucket!

They would not be denied.

Fighting from behind in the fourth quarter Friday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team ended its season with a stirring 56-51 win at Friday Harbor.

The victory was the 10th straight for the high-flying Wolves, who finish 11-3 on the season.

It was a wild ‘n woolly campaign, with Craig Anderson and Jon Roberts taking the coaching reigns for the final three games after head coach Hunter Smith left to start fire school.

Along the way, swing player Chase Anderson moved up full-time to varsity, and big man Mikey Robinett moved out of state with his family.

But no matter who was on the floor, this pack of Wolves was a ferocious one, attacking on defense and spreading the love on offense.

Three different JV players topped 100 points, while a fourth one missed by just a three-ball.

That willingness to share the ball was on full display Friday, as seven different Wolves hit the bottom of the net with at least one shot.

Freshman Camden Glover led the way, torching Friday Harbor for 23 points, while Jack Porter knocked down 13.

Aiden O’Neill (8), Hunter Bronec (4), Johnny Porter (4), Hurlee Bronec (2), and Landon Roberts (2) also scored, with Malachi Somes putting the fear of God into his rivals while scrambling on defense.

Friday Harbor opened the game strongly, jumping out to a 20-12 lead after one quarter, but Coupeville took control after that, moment by moment, quarter by quarter.

A 17-13 surge in the second frame, fueled by eight points from Glover and a big three-ball off the electric fingertips of O’Neill, cut the deficit to 33-29.

From there, the Wolves narrowed things to 42-41 heading into the fourth, before closing the night on a 15-9 tear.

Jack Porter poured in nine of his 13 points in the final frame, while Coupeville, which was 0-4 at the free-throw line previously, went 5-8 in the waning moments.

Wheelin’, dealin’, winnin’

Landon Roberts was dealin’.

The Wolf sophomore spread the love Tuesday night, dishing out 12 assists as the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team thunked visiting La Conner 58-30.

The victory, keyed by a 23-0 run in the third quarter, stretches the squad’s winning streak to nine games and counting heading into the season finale.

The Wolves sit at 10-3 on the campaign, with a road trip Friday to Friday Harbor the cherry on the sundae.

Tuesday’s rumble with the Braves marked the final home game for Coupeville’s rising stars, and they controlled things from start to finish.

Six different Wolves made the net jump in the opening quarter, netting buckets as CHS bolted out to a quick 14-8 lead.

From there, Coupeville stretched its advantage to 23-13 at the half, before dropping the hammer during a stellar third quarter.

Aiden O’Neill tickled the twine for seven points coming out of halftime, with Hunter Bronec, Jack Porter, Camden Glover, and Malachi Somes also scoring during that aforementioned 23-0 shellacking.

Coupeville hit from all angles in the game, raining down five three-balls, with Somes and Hunter Bronec netting two apiece.

The Wolves, or at least Glover, were also spot-on at the free-throw line, where the Wolf freshman went a perfect 5-for-5 en route to scoring a game-high 13 points.

Jack Porter (10), O’Neill (9), Hunter Bronec (9), Johnny Porter (6), Somes (6), Hurlee Bronec (3), and Roberts (2) also scored, with Yohannon Sandles and Carson Field rounding out the active roster.

O’Neill’s final point of the night was his 100th of the season, making him the second Wolf JV player to hit triple digits this year.

He joins Madison McMillan, who has tallied 121 for the CHS girls’ team.

“They left it all on the floor!”

They went out with a bang.

Playing on their home floor for the final time during the 2022-2023 basketball season, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ ran visiting La Conner off the floor Tuesday night.

Getting points from eight different players, Kassie O’Neil’s squad captured a 52-36 win, giving them a season sweep of the Braves and lifting their record to 7-8.

“The girls kicked ass!” said the Wolf coach. “Such a great last home game.

“They left it all on the floor!”

The Wolf young guns close their season with a road trip Friday to face Friday Harbor, before several swing players join the CHS varsity full-time for the playoffs.

Tuesday’s tilt with La Conner was the first time Coupeville’s JV was in action since Jan. 27, but the layoff didn’t seem to hurt at all.

Madison McMillan hit the floor with fire coming out of her fingertips, raining down 10 points in the first eight minutes, as she and her teammates built an early 18-5 lead.

From there, the teams battled through a 10-10 stalemate in the second quarter, before La Conner pulled out a razor-thin 9-8 advantage in the third frame.

Up 36-24 heading into the fourth, Coupeville closed strongly, with Jada Heaton, Desi Ramirez-Vasquez, Teagan Calkins, and McMillan scoring during a final 16-12 surge.

McMillan and Calkins paced a balanced scoring attack, rattling the rim for 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Kierra Thayer and Heaton both popped for eight.

Ramirez-Vasquez (4), Carlota Marcos-Cabrillo (3), Kassidy Upchurch (2), and Kayla Arnold (1) also tallied points, with Reese Wilkinson, Brynn Parker, Bryley Gilbert, Skylar Parker, and Liza Zustiak chipping in with defense and hustle.

O’Neil, a former Coupeville hoops superstar, is wrapping up her first season as JV coach, and the experience has been hugely positive for her.

Not just in how her players have performed on the floor, but also in how they have carried themselves all season.

“The thing I’m most proud of with this group of girls is that they continue to play with integrity and positive attitudes,” O’Neil said.

“When other teams play dirty, our girls always take the high road, helping others up and apologizing if they hurt someone.

“Win or lose, they play with spirit!”

Jack Porter is a bad, bad man

They weren’t ready for the Jack Attack.

Auburn Adventist Academy jumped out to a big lead early Thursday but had no answer late for a suddenly red-hot Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad.

Sparked by Jack Porter, who banged home all 18 of his points after halftime, the Wolves roared from behind to capture a 36-27 non-conference win.

The team’s eighth-straight victory, it lifts the CHS young guns to 9-3 heading into the final week of the regular season.

Coupeville hosts La Conner next Tuesday, Feb. 7, then travels to Friday Harbor Feb. 10.

Playing in Thursday’s opener, the Wolf JV came out cold, falling behind 16-2 after the opening eight minutes.

But that was the exact moment when Coupeville started flexing, ramping up its defensive attack and blitzing the host Falcons.

Malachi Somes netted a three-ball for Coupeville in the second quarter, and he and his teammates started whittling away at the lead.

Still trailing 18-7 at the half, Coupeville threw a scare into Auburn with a 17-7 run across the third quarter.

Jack Porter was The Man, pumping in 12 points on six buckets in the frame, while running mate Aiden O’Neill chipped in with five points, including a trey.

Auburn was still clinging to a narrow 25-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the tide had turned.

Porter drilled a pair of three-balls down the stretch, O’Neill hit another long shot from behind the arc, and Coupeville closed the game on a 12-2 run to seal the deal.

Eight Wolves hit the floor in the win, with Jack Porter (18), O’Neill (9), Camden Glover (6), and Somes (3) providing all the offense.

Hunter Bronec, Landon Roberts, Johnny Porter, and Hurlee Bronec made their presence felt on the defensive end of the floor, while Yohannon Sandles and Carson Field provided vocal support from the bench for the well-balanced team.
