No one won like they did.

The Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad cruised to a school-best 12 wins this fall, including taking down previously untouchable La Conner in the season finale.

Along the way, third-year coach Ashley Menges got action for 11 girls, with 10 of them recording stats as the season unspooled.

Kassie O’Neil (far left) is the new CHS JV girls basketball coach. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

She’s changing gyms but remains a Wolf forever.

After a year with the Coupeville Middle School girls basketball program, Kassie O’Neil is crossing the hallway and joining the high school coaching staff.

One of the hardest-working Wolves to ever grace the hardwood back when she was dropping daggers, O’Neil is the new JV girls hoops coach for CHS.

She joins a program headed up by varsity coach Megan Smith and replaces Greg Turcott, who moved to Eastern Washington.

O’Neil’s hiring was confirmed Friday by Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith and will be official after school board approval.

The new girls JV coach once played on the same court where she’ll now pass on wisdom to a new generation.

Killer Kassie (second from left), during her playing days.

Part of a highly successful athletic family which includes siblings Kayla, Katie, and Kurtis, Killer Kassie was a hustler and a scrapper, a rebound and pass-first basketball player with an uncanny knack for draining big-time shots.

She cracked the CHS varsity basketball team near the end of her freshman season, making her debut with the top squad at the state tournament.

O’Neil, now a mother of a pack of boys, became a varsity captain in later seasons, topping the Wolves in rebounds and assists.

She also delighted in making the richniks at King’s shed sweet, sweet tears, twice knocking down buzzer-beating three-balls against the highly ranked Knights.

After high school, O’Neil played basketball at Whatcom Community College.

Now, as she preps for her newest challenge, she’s sky-high.

“I am so excited,” O’Neil said.

The future belongs to them.

As well as the present.

Sending a shockwave across the region, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad finally took down the big dogs Tuesday night.

After narrowly falling short in their two previous attempts, the Wolves not only beat visiting La Conner, but they also swept the Braves right out of the CHS gym.

Winning 25-16, 25-18, 25-15, Coupeville’s young guns wrap a season in which they went 8-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 12-2 overall.

The victory also serves notice to La Conner, which has been the undisputed heavyweight champ of the NWL for decades.

While the Braves JV has not been as flawless as the La Conner varsity, you can count the number of league losses the second squad has taken on one hand … and still have most of your fingers left.

Third-year Coupeville JV coach Ashley Menges and her spikers have been getting closer and closer to unseating their big-game rivals, and Tuesday night everything clicked.

The Wolves exploded out of the gate, thanks to Katie Marti, Taylor Brotemarkle, and Teagan Calkins cranking away from the service stripe, while Jada Heaton stalked the net, ready to inflict damage on anything which came her way.

Up 17-6 at one point, with La Conner’s coaching staff sitting stunned and slumped in their chairs, Coupeville never let the Braves have a moment to consider a comeback.

Two big kills from Calkins, including a buzzsaw of a slicer on set point, sent the Wolf faithful into pandemonium, and they never had a reason to calm down after that.

Set two was a little closer — the Wolves actually trailed early at 6-5 — but once CHS regained the lead, it held fast.

Tip winners from Marti and Calkins helped stretch a one-point lead out to nine points, while Brotemarkle couldn’t be contained as she fired darts and daggers on her serve.

With the win in hand for Coupeville, the teams played a third set for practice — a quirk seemingly reserved for the world of JV volleyball.

Riding an emotional high, then getting a floor-buckling kill from Aby Wood and long service runs from Marti and Johnson, the Wolves kept the joyous fire in their hearts raging.

Oktober Frost came off the bench to delight the crowd with several strong serves, while Heaton mashed the volleyball like it had personally insulted her.

The message was clear, and loudly delivered.

Coupeville’s young spikers are here to dominate, today and tomorrow.

You’ve been warned, world.

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 6 digs, 5 aces
Carly Burt — 1 dig
Teagan Calkins — 4 kills, 5 aces
Jada Heaton — 4 kills, 1 assist
Issabel Johnson — 4 kills, 3 digs, 3 aces
Katie Marti — 3 kills, 3 digs, 12 assists, 6 aces
Chloe Marzocca — 2 digs
Grier Mooney — 1 dig, 2 aces

The victory express chugs on.

Racking up 25 service aces Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball team swept visiting Neah Bay off the floor, winning its eighth-straight match.

With the non-conference victory, the Wolf young guns soar to 10-1 on the season, best mark of any CHS fall sports team.

It was a competitive match, to be sure, but one which Coupeville largely controlled, coming out on top 25-23, 25-15, 25-19.

The first two sets played out to a similar tune — the Wolves jumped out to a large lead, the Red Devils rallied, then the Wolves put the hammer down.

Katie Marti got the day off to a strong start, peppering Neah Bay with nasty serves as she staked Coupeville to a quick 6-0 lead.

Teagan Calkins was a tipping machine, using her fingers to flick winners away from her rivals, while Jada Heaton smashed all the air out of the volleyball on a brutal kill as CHS pushed the margin to 13-5.

That seemed to light a fire under the feisty visitors, however, as they fought all the way back to force a tie at 18-18.

Bumping the intensity up just a notch or two, the Wolves broke the tie with five straight points, thanks to strong serving from Marti and a pair of big kills from Issabel Johnson — only to see Neah Bay respond with its own five-point tear.

Knotted at 23-23, the set could have gone either way, but the Red Devils kindly botched the next two points, allowing CHS coach Ashley Menges to exhale and call for a refill on her water from mom Jennifer.

Set two wasn’t as quite as collar-tightening, though it did have its escapades.

Marti again staked her squad to an early lead from the service stripe, this time at 5-0, before Neah Bay fought back to knot things at 10-10.

This time, Coupeville pulled away much faster, with Teagan Calkins, Heaton, and Johnson compiling sizzling runs on serve to pace a 15-5 finish.

Along the way, fab frosh Calkins, runnin’ and gunnin’ on the far side of the court, frequently went skyborne, bashing winners which scattered Neah Bay defenders in all directions.

With the match in hand, the third set was just for practice, but both squads took it quite seriously, continuing the back-and-forth battle.

While the Red Devils claimed the early lead, Coupeville snatched the advantage for good at 11-10 on another booming spike off of Johnson’s explosive fingertips.

Taylor Brotemarkle, spinning the ball and droppin’ aces, led the attack at the service line, while Marti ran off five straight points and Grier Mooney ended the match with a resounding ace down the middle of the floor.

Menges got strong work from all nine Wolves in uniform, with Carly Burt, Chloe Marzocca, and Aby Wood also aiding the stellar group effort.

Jada Heaton whispers to the volleyball, “Sorry, but this is gonna hurt. A lot.” (Bailey Thule photo)

“It was a good night for us, with some really good competition.”

Two matches against Northwest 2B/1B League powerhouse La Conner are ahead on the schedule for the high-flying Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad.

With that in mind, a win Thursday at Mount Vernon Christian was a great confidence builder for the Wolves, something coach Ashley Menges was thrilled to witness.

And CHS got pushed a bit, dropping the first set 25-21, before thrashing the Hurricanes 25-12, 15-3 the rest of the way.

Now a pristine 6-0 in league play, 9-1 overall, the young Wolves carry a seven-match winning streak into a home clash Saturday with non-conference foe Neah Bay.

The La Conner rumbles are Oct. 18 (road) and Oct. 25 (home), but for this night, the win over the Hurricanes was all that mattered.

“Mount Vernon Christian is definitely an improved team, which was really good for us to face,” Menges said.

Coupeville came out a bit cold but flipped the switch when it mattered most.

“Our start was not strong, making weird errors and having hardly any energy,” Menges said.

“However, it did get a lot better throughout the next two sets, proving they can bounce back easily and get back to what we know.”

All in all, a win is a win, and with the best record of any fall sports team at CHS, the JV spikers are hitting their stride.

“Our main focuses for tonight were consistency and communication, which we definitely worked on a lot,” Menges said.

“I’m excited to see that good of competition right before La Conner, because the girls and I are very excited for that one.”
