They came ready to crack Concrete.

Roaring out of the gate Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad obliterated the visiting Lions 25-3, 25-13, 25-13.

The sixth-straight win for the Wolf young guns, it lifts them to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 8-1 overall.

Coupeville was relentless from the service stripe all night, piling up 36 aces, and the winners started flying early.

Katie Marti opened things with six quick points on her serve, Issabel Johnson dropped a couple of nasty offerings Concrete had no chance of hitting, and then Taylor Brotemarkle went to work.

The Wolf sophomore stepped to the line with a 10-2 advantage and ran the lead up to 20-2 in the span of about 17 seconds.

Concrete only managed to return one of Brotemarkle’s first 10 serves, and that brief rally was quickly crushed when Aby Wood delivered a spike winner at the net.

The Wolves closed the opening set with Grier Mooney peppering Concrete’s would-be serve returners, and the rout was on.

While the second and third set were closer than the first frame, Coupeville quickly regained control each time, earning a nod of approval from coach Ashley Menges.

Teagan Calkins and Jada Heaton each cracked gym-shaking winners while patrolling the net, while Johnson also brought the thunder when Concrete managed to briefly force a back-and-forth.

Menges got solid play from across her roster, with all 10 girls in uniform contributing.

Chloe Marzocca, Carly Burt, and Oktober Frost also saw action, with Marzocca thumping a dramatic service ace on her first swing at the line.

The league victory marked the start of a busy week for the Wolves, who travel to Mount Vernon Christian Thursday, then host non-league foe Neah Bay Saturday.

They’re pretty much untouchable.

The Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad has the best record of any Wolf fall sports team, and it can slay you in multiple ways.

Thursday night the young guns showed they had grit, rallying to topple visiting South Whidbey 18-25, 25-20, 15-12.

The non-conference victory lifts the Wolves to 7-1 on the season and gives them a season sweep of the two matches with their archrivals from Langley.

“Pretty good!” said CHS coach Ashley Menges. “I was glad the girls were able to pull out the win.

“We don’t see many tests throughout the season, so I was pleased to see they can handle the pressure as well as they did.”

The Falcons claimed the early advantage, but the Wolves, who got stats from all nine girls to see the floor, never folded.

“We had a few up and down moments, getting rattled at times, especially in serve receive, but they were able to pull it together when it was needed,” Menges said.

“We definitely are going to start fine-tuning some skills getting towards the second half of the season,” she added. “But so far the girls have made great progress, and, as always, I’m very proud of them.”

Next up for the JV spikers is a return to Northwest 2B/1B League action.

The Wolves put their 4-0 conference record on the line Tuesday, Oct. 11, when Concrete visits Whidbey.

Thursday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 9 digs, 3 aces
Carly Burt — 1 kill, 1 dig
Teagan Calkins — 5 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces

The layoff didn’t hurt them.

Returning to competition for the first time in a week-plus Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball team picked up right where it left off.

Thumping rivals and taking names.

Roaring to a 25-8, 25-8 victory at Friday Harbor, the Wolves ran their winning streak to four matches, improving to 6-1 overall, 4-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Now, it’s a much-smaller gap between matches, with South Whidbey due to come to Coupeville Thursday for a non-conference tilt.

As she headed home on the ferry Tuesday, Wolf JV coach Ashley Menges was in a good mood.

“It was a solid night!” she said. “I was very happy to see that after a whole week off of games, we didn’t miss a beat.

“We got to work on a lot of new things in practice, and you could already see it implemented tonight, which was great to see.”

Coupeville used 10 players in the match, with eight Wolves making the stat sheet, while Carly Burt and Oktober Frost chipped in with hustle and desire.

“All the girls are starting to work on new skills, which I love,” Menges said. “Lots of them working on spot serving and jump floats.

“It was just a really good game to work through new stuff,” she added. “Everyone got to get some court time too, which is always appreciated.”

The Spartans made a good stand, but still got chomped by the Wolves.

Riding a hot streak at the service stripe Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad polished off host Forks in straight sets, running its winning streak to three matches.

With the 25-10, 25-18, 25-18 non-conference victory, the Wolves improve to 5-1 heading into a major showdown next Thursday, Sept. 29 at La Conner.

Saturday’s rumble, coming after a long bus trip out to bat country, was a battle between two fairly evenly matched squads.

“Forks was good!” said Coupeville coach Ashley Menges. “We focused a lot on what we could control, and it worked out well for us.”

The spiker guru praised her entire team, offering a few extra props for a couple of standouts.

“We had a lot of service runs, especially from Grier (Mooney) and Teagan (Calkins), which we’ve been working hard on becoming a consistent service team,” Menges said.

Issabel (Johnson) did great working hard and filling in in the middle position, which we’re all so appreciative of.”

As the Wolves prep for the upcoming showdown with their biggest Northwest 2B/1B League rivals, Menges, like varsity coach Cory Whitmore, is working on making sure her players talk to each other while on the court.

“Our focus moving on is upping our communication throughout the entirety of the play,” she said. “As well as all the way through the game.”

Saturday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 12 digs, 2 aces
Teagan Calkins — 4 kills, 3 digs, 3 aces
Jada Heaton — 3 kills, 3 aces
Issabel Johnson — 2 kills
Katie Marti — 2 kills, 1 dig, 14 assists, 8 aces
Madison McMillan — 8 kills, 2 digs, 4 aces

Grier Mooney and Coupeville’s JV spikers rolled to a quick win against Orcas Island. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

They were ruthless.

Knowing Orcas Island needed to get out of town by a reasonable time to catch the ferry home, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad rolled to a victory in record time Thursday night.

Playing second, after the varsity match went a full five sets, the young Wolves crushed the Vikings 25-8, 25-11.

The victory lifts Coupeville to 3-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-1 overall.

The Wolves get their own long trip Saturday, when they trek off to the wilds of Forks for a non-conference tilt.

Thursday’s match was all about power, as Coupeville blistered the ball and Orcas had few answers.

The Wolves rained down 18 aces, while ending most rallies with a mere hit or two.

Katie Marti, who opened the match by peppering Orcas with her nasty serve, had the put-away of the match midway through the first set.

Bounding airborne, the CHS sophomore reached back way over her head to corral a ball trying to evade her arm, then lashed a spike which bit the court with a vengeance, tearing up little chunks of wood in the process.

Or at least it felt that way.

While the CHS gym floor remained largely intact, the Wolves also got big hits from Madison McMillan and Issabel Johnson, plus a beautiful drop shot off the fingers of Taylor Brotemarkle.

Look away for a hot second to answer a question from someone else in the stands, and when you looked back, Coupeville had strung together another 4-5 points in the blink of an eye.

That brought a smile to the face of coach Ashley Menges and sent everyone ankling to the exits in record time.

On to bat country for the red-hot JV spikers!

Thursday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 kill, 1 assist
Teagan Calkins — 6 aces
Jada Heaton — 1 assist
Issabel Johnson — 2 kills, 3 assists
Katie Marti — 4 kills, 1 digs, 6 assists, 10 aces
Madison McMillan — 4 kills, 2 aces
