JV rolls to win in league opener

Keep the pressure on.

If that was the plan Tuesday for the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball squad, it worked really well.

Outscoring host Sultan in every quarter, the Wolves headed back to the bus carrying a well-executed 27-17 win in their league opener.

The victory lifts the young guns to 4-1 overall, 1-0 in North Sound Conference play.

Coupeville garnered the win thanks to remarkably consistent play, as they outscored the Turks by the same score, 6-4, in the first, second, and fourth quarters.

Just to mix things up, the Wolves came out hot in the third quarter and rang up a 9-5 advantage to make sure the scorebook operator was paying attention.

Freshman guard Alita Blouin was the wind beneath Coupeville’s wings, powering her way to a game-high 10 points while tossing in at least a free throw in every quarter.

She got plenty of help from her teammates, with Ella Colwell banking home seven points and Ryanne Knoblich hitting for five.

Gwen Gustafson rattled the rims for four, while Abby Mulholland nailed a free throw to round out the offensive attack.

Also seeing floor time for Megan Smith’s squad were Natalie Castano, Claire Mayne, Jessenia Camarena, Morgan Stevens, and Savana Allen.

The Wolf JV has a busy week, with another road game Thursday at Port Townsend, then a home game Saturday against Nooksack Valley.

After that, Coupeville heads out on winter break.

Wolf JV frozen out in the 4th quarter

Great set-up, disappointing finale.

Having rallied to tie up the game heading into the fourth quarter Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball squad looked to be in good shape.

But the Wolves host in Seattle, The Bush School, proved to be just a little too deadly down the stretch, holding off CHS to escape with a 42-35 win.

The non-conference loss drops Coupeville’s young guns to a still-respectable 3-2 on the season.

And now, having played four of their first five on the road, the Wolves get three straight at home next week, then a long winter break.

CHS hosts Chimacum Tuesday, Port Townsend Thursday, and Nooksack Valley Saturday.

Playing in Seattle, the Wolves fell behind early, then got hot coming out of the halftime break.

Down 8-5 after the first quarter, Coupeville saw the gap widen to 19-13 after the second frame wrapped up.

Perhaps Wolf coach Chris Smith gave a rousing halftime speech, or maybe the Wolves naturally shooting ability just clicked back into place.

Either way, Coupeville was a different team in the third quarter.

With Logan Martin popping for four points to lead the way, five different Wolves scored as CHS used a 13-7 surge to knot the game up at 26-26.

That set up a frantic finale, but one The Bush School managed to control, using a mix of field goals and pressure-packed free throws.

Sage Downes led Coupeville’s offensive attack, making the nets pop for 10 points, while Martin banked in nine and Grady Rickner knocked down eight.

Alex Jimenez (5), Daniel Olson (2), and Cody Roberts (1) also scored, with Downes, Martin, and Jimenez all connecting on three-balls.

Chris Cernick, Alex Murdy, and Miles Davidson also saw floor time for the Wolves.

Let ’em play, they win

They only got one chance to play, so they made dang sure to get the most out of it.

While some other Coupeville High School basketball teams are playing as many as three times this week, the Wolf JV girls got the short end of the stick.

Friday Harbor bailed on its game at the last second Wednesday, and The Bush School was upfront about only wanting to play a varsity game Saturday.

That left the Coupeville JV girls with one chance to impress, Friday night at home against Concrete, and they delivered.

And how.

Blasting the visiting Lions in every quarter, the Wolves romped to a 50-13 non-conference victory, lifting their record to a shiny 3-1 on the season.

CHS bolted out to a 13-2 lead after one quarter of hardwood action, sparked by the hot shooting of Alita Blouin, who popped for six quick points in the first frame.

From there, Megan Smith’s squad attacked from all angles, throwing up buckets at a dizzying pace.

From 13-2, Coupeville stretched the lead to 26-7 at the half, then 37-9 after three quarters.

The Wolves got big games from everyone on the roster, with eight different players scoring.

Gwen Gustafson, the only Wolf to score in every quarter, finished atop the stat sheet, popping the nets for a sweet 15 points, while Blouin was right behind her with 12.

Abby Mulholland (7), Ella Colwell (6), Jessenia Camarena (4), Natalie Castano (3), Savana Allen (2), and Ryanne Knoblich (1) also scored.

That pack got on-court help from Samantha Streitler, Claire Mayne, and Morgan Stevens, and off-court support from Lily Leedy and Heidi Meyers.

While the young Wolves will sit out Saturday’s action, they have a full week ahead, with games against Sultan, Port Townsend, and Nooksack Valley before heading into winter break.

Road warriors blitz to another win

Have basketball, will score.

Led by the one-two combo of Grady Rickner and Daniel Olson, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team scorched the nets Wednesday en route to another win.

Leading from start to finish, the Wolves rolled to a 56-37 non-conference victory at Friday Harbor, lifting their record to a crisp 3-1 on the season.

Rickner was in a groove all night, tossing in points in every quarter as he dropped a game-high 19 into the scoring column.

The Wolf sophomore rattled the rims for three in the first quarter, then went uphill from there, adding four, five, and seven in the ensuing frames.

Rickner netted a trio of three-balls along the way, while Alex Jimenez and Alex Murdy also hit from behind the arc.

Olson finished in double digits as well, dumping in six of his 12 points during Coupeville’s 18-point fourth quarter assault on the net.

Murdy (7), Cody Roberts (6), Jimenez (5), TJ Rickner (5), and Sage Downes (2) rounded out a well-balanced offensive attack, with Miles Davidson and Logan Martin also seeing floor time.

Chris Smith’s high-flying squad returns to action this weekend, as Coupeville hosts Concrete Friday, then hits the road to Seattle Saturday to play The Bush School.

Get buckets, get wins

Unleash the beasts.

Raining down death ‘n destruction from all angles, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team torched the nets for 28 points in the third quarter Saturday, blowing open their hardwood rumble with visiting Orcas Island.

That explosion, in which seven different Wolves tallied points, turned a modest eight-point halftime lead into a 32-point bulge.

By the time the final buzzer mercifully sounded, Coupeville was on top 60-23, claiming a win in its home opener, and improving to 2-1 on the season.

Chris Smith’s squad came out focused early, turning a 12-9 lead at the first break into a 20-12 edge by halftime.

But it was the third quarter, a 28-4 reign of beautiful terror, which really sealed the deal.

Sage Downes had the hottest hand of any Wolf shooter, rattling the rim for nine of his game-high 16 points in the frame.

He had plenty of help, however, as Grady Rickner tossed in six in the quarter, while Alex Murdy banked home four.

For the game, the Wolves put three guys into double digits, as Downes (16), Daniel Olson (10), and Rickner (10) split the primary scoring load.

Murdy (8), Logan Martin (5), Cody Roberts (4), Andrew Aparicio (4), Chris Cernick (2), and Alex Jimenez (1) scored as well, while TJ Rickner, Miles Davidson, and Chris Ruck also saw floor time.
