Wolf grads cruise on college courts!!

It was a fairly flawless night for Wolf alumni.

Two CHS grads played college ball Saturday, and both helped their teams come away with big league wins.

Makana Stone was in Walla Walla with Whitman College, which ripped visiting Lewis & Clark 77-65, while Kailey Kellner took the court in Ohio as D’Youville College routed host Franciscan 68-50.

Stone soars:

With their sophomore sensation collecting eight points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal, Whitman rolled to its 12th straight win.

Now 12-1 overall, 4-0 in league play, the Blues, ranked #7 in D-II basketball, sit tied with George Fox atop the Northwest Conference standings.

Whitman jumped out to an early 21-12 lead after one quarter, stretched the margin to 19 at the half, then weathered a bit of a comeback by their three-ball happy foes.

The Blues spread their scoring out, with Taylor Chambers leading four players in double digits with 12.

Casey Poe, Mady Burdett and Maegan Martin each chipped in with 10, while Emily Rommel helped Stone on the boards, snaring eight.

Stone leads Whitman in scoring (166 points), rebounding (79) and field goal percentage (62.6% on 72-115 from the floor).

Kellner kills:

D’Youville improved to 3-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with its road win, and now sits at 4-7 overall.

Kellner, a freshman, swished a second-quarter jumper and pilfered a steal for the Spartans, who led from start to finish.

A 26-15 first-quarter run broke the game wide open, with D’Youville adding to its lead at a steady pace from there.

The Spartans sit in third-place in the 10-team league, trailing just Mt. Aloysius (6-0) and Hilbert (5-1).

College ball calls Kellner back to NYC!!

Back at it and time to get the rust knocked off.

Coupeville grad Kailey Kellner and her D’Youville College teammates returned to the hard court Thursday, the first time they had seen action in almost a month.

The last time the Spartans took the floor was Dec. 9, and it showed a bit, as D’Youville couldn’t quite find its rhythm in a 70-48 loss to visiting Alfred State.

The non-conference defeat drops the squad to 3-7, but they sit at 2-1 in league play.

After this, the Spartans play 15 straight conference tilts, starting with a road trip Saturday to face Franciscan.

D’Youville hung tough for a quarter Thursday, trailing just 17-15 at the first break.

After that Alfred State steadily pulled away, with a 21-11 run in the fourth quarter the final huge nail in the coffin.

Kellner finished with three points, hitting a trey, and four rebounds.

She’s played in every game this season for D’Youville, starting four, and is averaging 3.3 points and 2.4 rebounds a night in her freshman campaign.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner for Wolf grads everywhere.

Both of Coupeville’s college basketball-playing whiz kids came away with victories Saturday, while playing in different states.

Makana Stone and Whitman College rolled to a tourney win in Spokane, their eighth-straight triumph.

Meanwhile, out in Pennsylvania, Kailey Kellner and D’Youville College snapped a losing skid and go into a nearly month-long break flush with a conference win.

Stone: 

Whitman, ranked #7 in the most-recent NCAA D-III women’s basketball poll, bounced Colorado College 75-42 to sweep through the Holiday Classic presented by Red Lion River Inn.

The Blues improved to 8-1, and will take a week-and-a-half off before playing in the Trinity University Classic in San Antonio Dec. 20-21.

Saturday, Whitman leaned on All-American Casey Poe and their sophomore sensation, Stone, who made for a very-effective one-two punch.

The duo dropped 14 points apiece, while Stone added four rebounds, four assists and a steal.

After a quick start (Whitman rolled out to an 18-9 bulge after one quarter), the Blues put it on cruise control for the rest of the afternoon.

The second half was a thing of beauty, as Whitman rolled up a 43-18 advantage after the break.

Through nine games, Stone, who was voted tourney MVP for her work this weekend, leads the Blues in scoring, tallying 129 points.

She also has 52 rebounds, 19 assists, six steals and a blocked shot.

A key to her success this season has been her sizzlin’ shooting touch. Stone is hitting 65% from the field, on 55 of 84 shots, and 73% from the free throw line (19-26).

Kellner:

The freshman Spartan snagged two rebounds, as D’Youville held off a furious fourth quarter rally in a 53-50 win at Pittsburgh-Greensburg.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak and lifts the Spartans to 3-6 overall, 2-1 in league play.

Up by three at the half, D’Youville crushed it in the third, rolling up a 22-9 advantage.

Then, the Spartans almost gave it all back, allowing their hosts to go on a 19-6 run in the fourth which fell just short of a miracle comeback.

D’Youville is now off until Jan. 4.

Through the first nine games of her college career, Kellner has made four starts and is averaging 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds a night.

Split decisions!!

Two different states, two very different results.

Coupeville grads Makana Stone and Kailey Kellner both laced up their shoes and hit the college basketball court Saturday, but only one came away feeling great.

Stone and Whitman College thrashed arch-rival University of Puget Sound 80-69 in Tacoma, while Kellner and D’Youville College fell 81-49 to visiting Mt. Aloysius in Buffalo, New York.

Stone:

Even saddled with some early foul trouble, the splendid sophomore finished with 12 points, four rebounds and two assists in the win.

The victory, which lifts Whitman to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in league play, was a chance for the Blues to make an early statement.

Last year they fell twice in overtime to PLU during the regular season, then bounced back to smack the Lutes twice in the playoffs.

This time around, Whitman entered ranked #8 in D-III, while PLU was #19.

The Blues took the early lead, heading into the first break up 20-15, and never let their rivals get back in the game.

Whitman put the hammer down in the fourth, as Stone scored six of her 12 points during a game-busting run to start the period.

She was one of three Blues to finish in double digits, with Casey Poe knocking down 18 and Emily Rommel tickling the twines for 16. Elizabeth Prewitt scorched the nets for 27 in a losing cause.

After back-to-back league games on the road, Whitman gets a break, heading off to the Holiday Classic presented by Red Lion River Inn in Spokane next weekend.

The Blues play non-conference foes Carroll College and Colorado College Dec. 8-9.

Through the first seven games, Stone leads Whitman in points (100) and rebounds (45) and has shown a sizzlin’ shooting touch. She’s hitting 65% from the field (41-63) and 78% from the line (18-23).

Kellner:

D’Youville had a two-game winning streak snapped thanks to wildly inconsistent scoring.

The Spartans held their own with Mr. Aloysius in the first (17-16) and third quarters (12-12), but were buried in the second (28-11) and fourth (24-10).

The loss drops D’Youville to 2-5 overall, 1-1 in league play.

Kellner, despite starting for the fourth-straight contest, didn’t get much of a chance to make a difference as the Spartans coach juggled lineup looks all game in an effort to see what his bench could accomplish.

The former Wolf pulled down a season-low eight minutes, missing the only shot she put up.

She and her teammates get right back at it Monday, when they hit the road to face Buffalo State.

From a win to a winning streak.

Sparked by Coupeville grad Kailey Kellner, the D’Youville College women’s basketball squad rolled Wednesday to its second-straight victory.

Beating Penn State-Behrend 62-45 on the road in Erie, PA, the Spartans improved to 2-4 on the season.

The win was also noteworthy for being D’Youville coach Dan Glover’s 50th career win, and for coming in the team’s first Allegeheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tilt.

The Spartans came out strongly, grabbing a 15-9 lead after the first quarter, then steadily pulled away from there.

Kellner, a freshman making her third start, dropped in all five of her points during a crucial run to end the first half.

Penn State had cut the lead down to five, but with the former Wolf knocking down a three-ball and another bucket, D’Youville closed the half on a 10-5 run.

Kellner was a busy bee all game, also picking up two steals, three rebounds and a team-high four assists.

For the season, she sits with 30 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals.

D’Youville will try and stretch its winning streak to three Saturday, when it hosts Mt. Aloysius in a league game.
