Jake McCormick

Jake McCormick is part of the 7th fastest 4 x 400 relay squad in District 1.

OK, calm down, there are still two months to go, but … right now, this moment … Makana Stone would be a state champion.

The Coupeville High School sophomore has run the fastest 400 time of any girl in 1A, 2B or 1B this season, clocking in at 61.46 at the Seattle Academy Relays Mar. 22.

Three meets into the season, Stone appears four times on the 1A girls Top 10 lists, with top-five times in the 200, 400 and as a member of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay teams, where she’s joined by Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt and Lauren Grove.

None of those four Wolves are seniors, either, with Etzell the oldest as a mere junior. Continued good times should be ahead.

The CHS boys don’t have any athletes in the Top 10 currently, but they do have a fair amount making the list if you take one step down and look at the top performers in District 1.

Sylvia Hurlburt is hopping for joy over her team’s performance.

She’s not slowing down any time soon.

Coupeville High School sophomore Makana Stone is starting off her second track season the same way she did her first one — kickin’ butt and takin’ names.

Thursday, she and her teammates were in Sultan for a four-team meet and the swift one captured victories in all four of her events.

She cruised to first in the 100 and 200, then teamed with junior Marisa Etzell, fellow sophomore Sylvia Hurlburt and freshman Lauren Grove to capture both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay races.

On the boys side of the battle, Wolf senior Nick Streubel out-flung teammate Dalton Martin to claim the discus title, the only event win for Coupeville.

With a thin roster, the 1A Wolves finished fourth in both team competitions, behind 2A schools Lakewood, Archbishop Thomas Murphy and Sultan.

An entire season, compiled neatly into one graph.

That’s what looking at season-ending stats is like, though, of course, just viewing the numbers doesn’t begin to tell you the tale of the highs, the lows, the big moments, the triumphs and heartbreak that go into every year of basketball.

But we’re here to look at stats, and stats for the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team, which won on a consistent basis in 2013-2014.

Twice they held opponents scoreless for an entire half (once they stretched that to three quarters) and the Wolves outscored their foes 456-454 this year (359-350 in Cascade Conference play).

Looking through the stats, some leaders pop out.

Kailey Kellner, despite joining the team late after moving to Whidbey from England, hit more three-point bombs (5) than the rest of her 14 teammates combined (4 — Emily Coulter hit two, while Skyler Lawrence and Mattea Miller each hit one).

Carlie Rosenkrance netted the most free throws (16), while Wynter Thorne and Jenn Spark had the best percentage at the line, each knocking down 67% of their shots.

When it came to playing rough and tumble, no one was more effective than defensive standout Lauren Grove. She was whistled for a team-high 33 fouls, edging out Tiffany Briscoe (29) and Kellner (23), but that’s because:

A) She was always on top of the ball and frequently made off with steals, kick-starting the Wolf offense

and

B) The refs are blind.

All 15 girls to pull on the red and black scored this year, which is always one of Wolf JV coach Amy King’s goals.

The scoring stats:

Carlie Rosenkrance (88)
Wynter Thorne (60)
Kailey Kellner (44)
Skyler Lawrence (38)
Lauren Grove (36)
Monica Vidoni (35)
Mattea Miller (34)
Sophia Jebrail (31)
Tiffany Briscoe (25)
Emily Coulter (22)
Jenn Spark (18)
McKayla Bailey (14)
McKenzie Bailey (7)
Erin Josue (2)
Aura Corredor (1)

Locked and loaded.

The Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team has become relentless on the defensive side of the ball in recent games.

After holding Archbishop Thomas Murphy scoreless for an entire eight-minute period, the Wolves went and upped the ante in the very next game, refusing to surrender a single point to Mount Vernon Christian for an ENTIRE HALF.

Sixteen minutes of Wolf-administered Hell on Earth.

And how is it done? Take a gander at the photo above and you’ll see how.

Better yet — hit enlarge on the pic and bask in the full fiery glow of Lauren Grove’s laser glare.

The Wolves are coming … and they’re coming for you.

Now that’s how you play defense.

Holding visiting Mount Vernon Christian scoreless for the ENTIRE SECOND HALF, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team romped to a 25-6 win Saturday.

Yes, you read that right. The visiting Hurricanes were unable to put a single, solitary point on the board after halftime, as the Wolves — minus four key players — got big-time nasty.

“Our defense was phenomenal!,” said Coupeville coach Amy King. “We harassed ball handlers, interfered with passes, forced turn overs and yes, they got shots up, but we didn’t allow them offensive rebounds or put backs.”

The Wolves were without McKayla Bailey (softball tournament) and McKenzie Bailey (injury) and swing players Monica Vidoni and Wynter Thorne were held out of the JV game, so they would be fully available to help a varsity team missing one of its captains.

Not that the absences made the slightest difference. Every one of the Wolf girls wearing a uniform chipped in, with Lauren Grove kick-starting the offense with a season-high nine points, outscoring MVC by herself.

Lauren decided she didn’t want a close game so went on a little rampage,” King said.

With Grove raining down buckets — and getting help from her teammates, as six other girls scored — Coupeville jumped out to a 15-6 lead at the half. Than the Wolves went into lock-down mode.

“Seriously, our defense the whole game was solid,” King said. “The girls playing low on defense moved so well, coming up to help the wings, then dropping back low to protect the key … it was a thing of beauty.

Emily (Coulter) started aggressively helping and others (Mattea Miller, Jenn Spark, Tiffany Briscoe and Kailey Kellner) followed,” she added. “All while the wings (Carlie Rosenkrance, Lauren, Erin Josue and Aura Corredor) put a hand in every shooters face.

“And you’re crazy if you think anyone could get into the key. Skyler (Lawrence) and Sophia (Jebrail) kept that closed up.”

With Rosenkrance sitting out the third, so she would have a quarter left to make her varsity debut later, Grove took over handling the ball. That took a slight bump, however, when she got in foul trouble.

“No other actual point guard to lead our offense, so I did the most logical thing … put in Emily as point guard,” King said. “She can handle the ball, she knows all the plays and she plays with confidence. Why not?

“She did great and said she never wanted to do that again!”

Kellner and Lawrence backed up Grove on the offensive end, each banging home four, while Rosenkrance, Miller, Jebrail and Spark all tossed in a bucket.

“Total team victory,” King said. “So much fun to watch!!”
