Labrador among state’s best

Ryan Labrador is playing with the big boys.

The recent Coupeville High School graduate was selected to play in this Saturday’s 25th annual Earl Barden Classic.

The all-star football game, which brings together many of the best seniors from the state, is open to players in 2A, 1A, and 2B.

Kickoff is 1 PM at Zaepfel Stadium at Eisenhower High School in Yakima.

Labrador, a stellar two-way lineman for CHS, is the first Wolf to play in the game since Josh Bayne went East in 2015.

The West team in this year’s game features three players from the North Sound Conference – Labrador and Cedar Park Christian teammates Dawson Drews and Epic Csigi.

Big Hurt gets big props!!

High school, college, it matters not — The Big Hurt and awards just go together.

Having recovered from a devastating injury last season, Central Washington University red-shirt sophomore offensive lineman Nick Streubel was rewarded Wednesday when he was tabbed as a First-Team All-League selection.

The Coupeville High School grad, an All-League and All-State player in his prep days, was one of 10 Wildcats honored by Great Northwest Athletic Conference coaches.

Central Washington rolled to an 11-0 mark, captured its first league title in five seasons, and is a #1 seed heading into the NCAA D-II playoffs.

The Wildcats nabbed four special awards, in addition to their All-Conference picks.

Senior linebacker Kevin Haynes was the Defensive Player of the Year, senior Bo Banner was the Defensive Lineman of the Year and junior transfer quarterback Reilly Hennessey was the Newcomer of the Year.

Topping things off, CWU head coach Ian Shoemaker was hailed as the Coach of the Year.

In a league dominated by juniors and seniors, Streubel was one of only four sophomores to be named as a First-Team player.

Big Hurt finds big success!!

Nick Streubel is healthy and the college football world trembles.

After missing all but one game last year thanks to an injury, The Big Hurt is back in the lineup for the Central Washington University football squad and the Wildcats can not be beaten.

A 17-10 come-from-behind win over North Alabama Saturday lifts CWU, ranked #9 in the last NCAA D-II poll, to a crisp 8-0.

The Wildcats have three regular season games left, all against league foes who they beat the first time around.

Central hosts Azusa Pacific for Senior Night Oct. 28 in a game which will be streamed by ESPN3, then hits the road to face Simon Fraser and Humboldt State the next two weeks.

Streubel, a three-sport star (football, basketball, track and field) during his days wandering Coupeville’s campus, is a red-shirt sophomore.

With six games under his belt this season, he has logged time as a lineman in 13 college games during his career.
