“I’m really proud of them.”

Though just an 8th grader, Lucy Schisel has already made a strong impact as one of the leading scorers on this year’s Coupeville High School varsity girls’ soccer squad.

Dangerous on the pitch, the young Wolf booter also is already showing maturity and polish off the field, as well.

Which was demonstrated in Schisel’s thoughtful postgame comments after CHS put up a spirited fight Friday night during a 6-0 loss to visiting Mount Vernon Christian, a team with legit state title hopes.

Coupeville was unable to keep the Hurricanes high-powered offense from raining down shots, with a little help from refs who awarded MVC two penalty shots for minor collisions while ignoring Wolf goaltender Finley Helm being steamrolled and left to pick grass out of her teeth.

But that doesn’t mean the plucky Wolves, minus three key players, didn’t go down swinging in front of their home fans.

“We put in our all,” Schisel said. “We pushed ourselves against a very good team, and we had the right idea most of the time — our passes were just a second too late.”

Coupeville’s defense, under extreme duress most of the night, held up well in the early going, holding the ‘Canes scoreless for 20 minutes to open play.

Helm made several nice snags on incoming missiles, while Lillian Ketterling ran down, and hip checked into submission, several MVC players intent on making long runs.

Ultimately, however, Mount Vernon had too many high-powered scorers and slipped in two goals in a two-minute span to take the lead.

The score remained at 2-0 heading into the half, with Olivia Hall, Hailey Goldman, Emma Cushman, Tamsin Ward and others putting together another 25-minute run of not surrendering a goal.

Then the dam broke, with the Hurricanes rattling home four more goals — two thanks to those penalty shots — to salt away the win.

Helm bounded high into the air to make a jump save on a well-cracked ball in the late going, while her defenders sacrificed their bodies to the cause until the final whistle.

With the loss, and Friday Harbor beating Lopez Island 3-0 earlier in the day, Coupeville’s playoff hopes took a hit, but are not gone.

The Wolves, now 4-4-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-5-2 overall, sit in fourth place in the seven-team league, with the top three teams getting a ticket to the postseason.

MVC is atop the standings at 9-0-0 for 27 points, followed by Friday Harbor (7-2-0 for 21 points) and Lopez (6-3-2 for 20 points), with CHS (14 points), La Conner (2-4-2 for eight points), Providence Classical Christian (2-7-0 for six points), and Orcas Island (0-10 for zippo) rounding out the chase.

Coupeville has two league games left, traveling to La Conner October 20 and hosting Friday Harbor October 29, while Lopez has one, traveling to La Conner October 27.

With three points for a win and one for a tie, the Wolves need to win both of their remaining league games and need Lopez to lose to force a tie for that third, and final, playoff berth.

Lyla Grose scored and played in goal for the Wolves in a win on Orcas Island. (Jacob Lujan photo)

Fourteen down, one (or two) to go.

Five different Wolves knocked in a goal Wednesday on Orcas Island, as the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad rolled to a 5-0 shutout of the host Vikings.

The win lifts CHS to 4-3-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-4-2 overall heading into a home clash Friday with league leader Mount Vernon Christian.

Facing off with a winless Orcas team, Jasmine Ader’s howlin’ Wolves spread the offensive love around.

Lillian Ketterling opened the scoring, with Lyla Grose, Sophia Greene, Tamsin Ward, and Lucy Schisel also beating the netminder.

It was the first goal of the season for both Greene and Ward, with the latter making her debut after sitting out the first 10 games while recovering from an injury.

Now with 16 career goals, Ward is one back of Lindsey Roberts for #4 on the CHS girls all-time scoring chart.

Grose and Ketterling are coming in hot, with nine apiece, while Schisel (4) and Greene (2) are working their way up the ladder as well.

With the explosion on Orcas, 14 of the 16 players on the roster have scored this year, the best single-season mark in program history.

The only two players without a score are goaltender Finley Helm, who has spent 95% of her time defending against shots, and not taking them, and defensive dynamo Taylor Marrs, who has been sidelined with a broken ankle.

Helm, who scored last season as an 8th grader, got some field time Wednesday, with Grose stepping into the net to finish off the shutout.

The Wolves, who are in their second season back after the program was shut down for two seasons due to a lack of players, has topped last year’s four-win total, and are in the hunt for a playoff berth.

After playing MVC Friday at Mickey Clark Field — 6:00 PM start and free admission — CHS travels to La Conner October 20, has a non-conference road game against East Jefferson October 24, then closes the regular season in Cow Town October 29 against Friday Harbor.

The net is in the mood to receive.

With both Coupeville High School soccer teams off to strong starts this fall, 16 different Wolves have already scored at least one goal.

The girls, who sit atop the Northwest 2B/1B League, are 3-0-1 overall, with nine players combining to have knocked in 15 scores.

And that’s all without Tamsin Ward, who rattled the nets for a team-high 15 goals as a freshman last season but is out for several weeks with an injury.

Meanwhile the Wolf boys are 2-1, with Edmund Wilson leading a seven-pack of scorers who have accounted for 12 goals and counting.

They’re all dangerous.

Seven different Wolves scored Friday night, as the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad crushed visiting Orcas Island 8-1 to move into sole possession of first place in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

With the lopsided victory at Mickey Clark Field, Jasmine Ader’s high-powered booters get to 2-0-1 in conference action, 3-0-1 overall.

With seven points (three for a win, one for a tie), the Wolves slide ahead of Friday Harbor (2-0-0 and six points) to claim the top rung.

Lopez Island (1-1-1 for four points), Mount Vernon Christian (1-0-0 for three points) and Providence Classical Christian (1-1-0 for three points) follow, with La Conner (0-1-0) and Orcas (0-4-0) in a last-place tie.

Next up for the Wolves is a road trip to MVC Tuesday, September 22, followed by a home clash with La Conner September 24.

For now, though, it’s the weekend and Coupeville can bask in the afterglow of a goal explosion.

The Wolves were led Friday by team captain Lillian Ketterling, who crunched home a pair of scores.

Also notching goals were Lyla Grose, Scarlet Barnes, Bella Sandlin, Bettie Woolworth, Ariella Lee-Spaulding, and Lucy Shisel.

Lee-Spaulding and Schisel lead CHS with three scores apiece on the season, while Grose and Ketterling have both banked in two.

Friday’s goals were the first ever at the high school level for Sandlin, Barnes, and Woolworth.

While Coupeville scored at will, especially in the second half, when it punched in seven of those eight goals, Wolf netminders Finley Helm and Taylor Marrs were much stingier, frequently denying the Vikings.

Lucy Schisel rattled in her first two goals as a Wolf in a big win Saturday afternoon. (Jordan Schisel photo)

Who’s afraid of the big bad Wolves?

The Marauders are, that’s who.

Making its home debut in grand style Saturday afternoon, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad pulled off a vintage David vs. Goliath win.

With 8th grade ace Lucy Schisel rattling home her first two goals as a Wolf, CHS shocked visiting Mariner 2-1 in a game where student body size had nothing to do with the result.

The Marauders, who rep a 4A school, share their school hallways with 1,559 students, while Coupeville seats just 192, landing them smack-dab in the 2B classification for sports.

Head out to the pitch and none of that mattered Saturday, as the Wolves improved to 1-0-1 on the young season, while dropping their large school non-conference foe to 0-2.

Coupeville, which is playing right now without the injured Tamsin Ward, who led the team with 15 goals last season, has gotten strong work from everyone on the roster.

Lyla Grose and Hazel Goodman scored in the team’s opener, a tie with Northwest 2B/1B League rival Lopez Island, while Finley Helm has stood tall in goal and Lillian Ketterling anchors the team as its serene captain.

Jasmine Ader’s squad has two home games on the schedule next week, with the Wolves hosting Providence Classical Christian Wednesday and Orcas Island Friday.

The first of those contests kicks off at 6:00 PM, the second at 4:00, and admission is free for both.
