Early tipoff times never scared them.

With the ref tossing the ball skyward at 8:59 AM Saturday morning at Central Washington University, it made for a quick turnaround for the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball team.

Back on the court about 15 hours after their last game, the Wolves responded well, playing a tough Toledo squad even until the third quarter.

While the Riverhawks eventually pulled out a 36-29 win, the scrappy Wolves closed their Eastern Washington holiday road trip in style.

Now 3-6 on the season, Coupeville is off until Jan. 4, when it travels to Wahkiakum for another stern non-conference test.

Squaring off with a Toledo squad which claimed its fourth straight win to get to 6-3, the Wolves kept things close.

Senior gunner Katie Marti outscored the Riverhawks by herself in a defensive-minded first quarter, staking CHS to a 5-4 lead.

Toledo evened things up at 13-13 heading into the halftime break, before using an 11-6 run in the third quarter to slightly pull away.

Ryah Stanley was the difference down the stretch, as the Riverhawk junior tallied nine of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter.

Toledo clanked many a free throw, netting just 5-15 at the line to open the door a bit, but the refs were little help, as Coupeville barely got to the charity stripe, finishing just 1-4 once there.

Marti paced the Wolves with nine points, moving from #44 to #41 on the CHS girls’ career scoring chart.

She sits with 263 points heading into 2025 and passed all-timers Madeline Strasburg (261), Carly Guillory (260), and Sarah Mouw (259) Saturday morning.

Madison McMillan and Haylee Armstrong both banked in six to back Marti, with Teagan Calkins (4), Mia Farris (2), and Jada Heaton (2) also keeping the scorekeeper busy.

Lyla Stuurmans, Danica Strong, Tenley Stuurmans, and Capri Anter rounded out Megan Richter’s roster on the holiday weekend road trip to Ellensburg.

Add another one to the list.

Lyla Stuurmans became the second member of the Coupeville High School Class of 2025 to sign a letter of intent to play college sports, inking her contract Friday to be a volleyball spiker at Skagit Valley College.

She joins Madison McMillan, who previously signed to play softball at Edmonds College.

Stuurmans, one of the best athletes, and best human beings, to come through Cow Town in recent years, is a standout three-sport star.

She’s the first girl in CHS history to play five seasons of varsity basketball and is a phenom in the world of track and field.

But volleyball is calling to her, and she has answered.

Stuurmans was the Northwest 2B/1B League MVP as a senior and was just tabbed as a Second-Team All-State player for her heroics.

The oldest of Scott and Sarah’s four children, Lyla racked up 200 kills, 22 solo blocks, 19 block assists, 113 digs, 30 service aces, and 16 assists during her final season in the red and black.

Coupeville (18-2) was undefeated until the final day of the season, won league and bi-district titles, and earned a program-best 4th place finish at the state tourney.

Another honor for the hardest-hitting volleyball spiker in Cow Town.

Coupeville High School senior Lyla Stuurmans, who was the Northwest 2B/1B League MVP this year, was tabbed as an All-State selection this week by the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association.

The outside hitter was named to the 2B Second Team, joining players from schools such as Freeman, Adna, and Lind-Ritzville-Sprague.

Stella Petersen, an outside hitter who led Manson to a state title, was picked as the 2B player of the year.

Coupeville volleyball’s All-State contingent is (l to r) Cory Whitmore, Lyla Stuurmans, Katie Marti, Mia Farris, and Cris Matochi.

The most-successful season in Coupeville High School volleyball history ended Sunday with an explosion of joy.

Three Wolf seniors — Lyla Stuurmans, Katie Marti, and Mia Farris — played in the All-State game at Burlington-Edison High School, with their own coach, Cory Whitmore, calling the shots.

It was Coupeville’s deepest representation at the event, which makes sense.

The Wolves, who were undefeated to the final day of the season, went 18-2, won league and Bi-District titles and finished 4th at the state tourney.

Both the victories and the state finish were the best ever achieved by a CHS spiker team.

Sunday, Whitmore — with assistance from Cris Matochi — coached the Gray team in the 2B game, with his players joined by fellow spikers from schools such as Adna and Forks.

“It was a fun experience to be a part of, and I was honored to be asked,” Whitmore said.

The pride of 2B.

“Our team was full of outgoing personalities that blended well. Helps to have Coach Cris along to keep things especially fun.”

With a large collection of Wolf fans and family members making the trip to the mainland, the Wolf trio shined in the big spotlight.

“Both Katie and Mia did really well, and I know if Lyla had been feeling better, she would have done great as well!” Whitmore said.

“I’m proud of how they represented our program, and it was fun to see how many made the drive over in support.

“That was really special, and a testament of what this team has inspired this season.”

Coupeville always travels well.
