If Whitman College is going to lose a women’s basketball game during the 2016-2017 season, it’ll have to wait until next year.

Closing out the ’16 portion of the schedule Tuesday, the Blues pulled away in the second half to claim a resounding 63-42 victory over the University of Redlands.

The victory, coming on day two of the Hoops in Hawaii Classic, lifts Whitman to 11-0.

The Blues, and fab frosh/Coupeville High School grad Makana Stone, don’t play again until Jan. 6.

By then, they’ll have trekked 2,800 miles home to Walla Walla, where they’ll kick off a four-game home-stand with a bout against Northwest Conference foe Linfield.

Whitman, which is 2-0 in league play, closes its regular season with 14 straight conference games.

Tuesday night’s game was close, for a quarter, as Whitman and Redlands were knotted at 14 at the first break.

After that the Blues steadily pulled away, opening a five-point lead at the half, stretching it to 11 after three, then closing with a 16-6 advantage in the fourth.

Stone, who has been a vital force for Whitman off the bench this season, was held scoreless for the first time as a college player Tuesday.

She did make off with a steal, though, which led to a bucket by teammate Casey Poe, part of her team-high 15 on the night.

Through 11 games, Stone is averaging 5.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a night.

The frosh is #3 on the Blues squad in hauling down caroms, and remains #1 in field goal percentage, hitting 51.9% (27-52) of her shots.

Nothing is slowing them down. Nothing.

Coming off of a nine-day gap between games, and a 2,797-mile road trip (that’s one way), the Whitman College women’s basketball team stormed into the Hoops in Hawaii Classic Monday and got right back to drop-kicking rival teams.

The Blues kicked off the two-day, six-team tourney in Honolulu by waxing California’s Occidental College 67-49, running their flawless record to 10-0 this season.

Whitman plays the University of Redlands Tuesday, a squad which bounced Wisconsin Lutheran 61-51.

North Central College tipped Chapman University 93-84 in the other first-round match-up.

Playing in the 9:00 PM nightcap on day one, the Blues didn’t waste any time, putting together a savage 24-9 first-quarter run to put the game away early.

Coupeville High School grad Makana Stone was the first woman off the bench for high-flying Whitman, and finished with four points, three boards, an assist and a steal in 13 minutes of floor time.

Chelsi Brewer knocked down 16 points to lead four Blues into double digit scoring.

Through her first 10 college games, Stone is averaging 6.0 points and 5.3 rebounds a night.

The freshman is third on the squad in rebounding, and is #1 in field goal percentage, having hit 54% of her shots (27-50).

There’s no end to the good times.

Romping to its biggest victory of the season, the Whitman College women’s basketball squad thrashed visiting Colorado College 104-43 Saturday night, improving to 9-0 on the season.

The Blues, who got six points and seven rebounds from former Coupeville High School star Makana Stone, won both of their games at the Kim Evanger Raney Classic.

Northwest Conference rival Whitworth, which beat Louisiana College in overtime Saturday, went 1-1, while Colorado and Louisiana each finished 0-2.

Whitman now has eight days off, not playing again until the Hawaii Tournament in Honalulu Dec. 19-20

Saturday night was a massacre, as the Blues jumped out to an 18-0 lead and scored between 23 and 31 points in every quarter.

Chelsi Brewer and Maegen Martin each went for 15 to lead six Whitman players in double-digit scoring.

Stone, continuing her stellar play as a super sub, was strongest in the second quarter, when she hit two of her three buckets and snared three boards.

For the season the Whitman frosh is averaging 6.2 points and 5.6 rebounds a night, while shooting a crisp 58.1% from the field (25 of 43).

CHS grad Makana Stone (left) and Whitman College teammates Mady Burdett (center) and Anissia Hughes are now 8-0 on the season.

You can’t stop their roll.

Rising in the polls and beating opponents by ever-bigger margins, the Whitman College women’s basketball squad is fast becoming a juggernaut.

Sparked by eight points and four rebounds from Coupeville High School grad Makana Stone, the Blues threw down an 89-59 beat-down on visiting Louisiana College Friday night.

The win, coming in the first round of the two-day Kim Evanger Raney Classic in Walla Walla, lifts Whitman to 8-0 on the season.

The Blues will face Colorado College Saturday in the tourney finale, then head to Honolulu Dec. 19-20 for the Hawaii Tournament.

Whitman put Friday’s game on ice fairly quickly, jumping out to a 27-14 lead after one quarter, before cruising home for the win.

Emily Rommel paced the Blues with 16, while three of her fellow starters dropped 11 apiece.

Coming off the bench as a super sub, Stone hit a pair of jump shots in the second quarter, then padded her scoring totals with two layups in the third.

On the season, she is averaging 6.3 points and 5.4 rebounds a night, and her 43 rebounds are third-best on the squad.

After hitting four of six shots Friday, Stone is shooting a crisp 56.4% from the field (22 of 39).

That puts her just one miss off of the team lead, currently held by Maegen Martin (22-38).

First they moved up three slots in the polls, then they wrecked another foe.

Whitman College’s women’s basketball squad, which includes former Coupeville High School legend Makana Stone, routed visiting Whitworth 61-50 Tuesday night to improve to a flawless 7-0.

The Blues entered the night ranked #22 in the most recent Women’s Basketball Coaches Association D-3 poll.

Whitman rolled to its second straight Northwest Conference win, using a 34-18 run over the middle two quarters to turn a tied ball game into a 16-point advantage.

Stone snared three of her five rebounds during that surge, while also picking up a steal.

She hit a season low with just a single point, off of a fourth quarter free throw, but she had the second-most rebounds for Whitman as it controlled the boards to a 36-25 tune.

Whitman spread its scoring around, with three players hitting double figures.

Emily Rommel popped for 15, Chelsi Brewer banked home 11 and Maegen Martin knocked down 10.

Through seven games, Stone, who is averaging 17 minutes a game off the bench, is putting up 6.0 points and 5.6 rebounds a night.

She leads the team in shooting percentage at 54.5% (18 of 33) and has seven steals, six assists and two blocks.

Whitman’s next four games come tourney-style, two in Walla Walla and two in Honalulu.

The Blues will play in the Kim Evanger Raney Classic Dec. 9-10 at home, facing Louisiana College and Colorado College.

After that it’s off to the islands for the Hawaii Tournament Dec. 19-20, where their foes will be Occidental College and the University of the Redlands.

Whitman then takes a two-week-plus break between games, returning to conference play Jan. 6 against Linfield College.

The Blues close with 14 straight league games, the first four on their home court.
