The most exciting team in sports entertainment.

This year’s Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad has won a combined 15 games (eight by the varsity, seven by the JV), miles ahead of any other program on Whidbey Island.

The Wolves are also, hands down, the best in all the land at posing for photos, both on and off the court.

The pics above, courtesy John Fisken and Eileen Stone, come from Saturday’s rumbles at Mount Vernon Christian.

The first quarter was a killer.

With three-point bombs falling from every angle at a horrifying rate, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team found itself in a huge hole at Mount Vernon Christian Saturday.

The Hurricanes dropped six treys on the Wolves, including three straight from the same player, building a 24-11 lead.

Then, Coupeville clamped down on the outside shooters, charged back to tie the game in the fourth quarter and had a chance to win, only to have a huge disparity at the free throw line kill their final hope.

By the time the non-conference tilt came to an end, the Wolves were on the short end of a 50-46 score.

The loss dropped CHS to 8-5 on the season.

Four times this season the Wolves have won back-to-back games, but have yet to get that elusive third straight win and really kick-start a winning streak.

Coupeville will get a huge opportunity to do just that, or more, as they play their final seven games against their Olympic League rivals.

The Wolves are 2-0 in league play, while Port Townsend, Klahowya and Chimacum (which comes to Whidbey Jan. 21 to kick things off) are a combined 4-31 this season.

But, even as CHS dreams of netting a championship banner — which would be the first for any Wolf team in any sport since 2002 — the reality is this is a team fond of playing like they’re on a roller-coaster.

One moment screaming joyfully at the top, the next wildly out of control and plunging into the pits of despair.

“We need to understand that other teams are coming to play a full game and this is something we will emphasis moving forward,” Wolf coach David King said. “Our goal is to make districts, get through district play and move on to state. For this to happen, we need to correct some things.

“Teams will not roll over and just let us come out and win,” he added. “We need to get tougher mentally and continue to show the fight and positive energy we had for the final three quarters.”

Over the final 24 minutes, Coupeville outscored MVC 35-26, while holding them to just one additional three-pointer, eventually charging back to tie the game at the end of the third quarter.

Led by Makana Stone and her quick hands, the Wolves became a steal-happy team in the second half, setting up numerous breakaway layups.

With the score knotted up at 41 midway through the fourth, foul trouble finally took its toll on Coupeville, however, putting a crimp in the comeback hopes.

The Wolves lost two key post players, Julia Myers and Hailey Hammer, who both fouled out in the quarter.

Given a chance to parade to the foul line, the Hurricanes drained 12 of 16 free throws in the final quarter to ice the game.

Coupeville had its fair chance at the line, as well, but left too many points unrecorded, hitting on just 9 of 25 from the charity stripe during the game.

“Another good sign was attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line,” King said. “Now it’s knocking them down when we have the opportunity.”

Trailing by five, the Wolves made one final run with Madeline Strasburg nailing a three-point shot to slice the lead.

Coupeville went for the steal on the in-bounds play, but couldn’t get it and had to foul one final time. With just four ticks on the clock, the MVC shooter drained both attempts to seal the victory.

Stone paced the Wolves with 16 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and three assists while Strasburg pumped in 10 to go with her three assists and three steals.

Kacie Kiel and Myers both popped for eight, Hammer banged home three and Wynter Thorne slid a free throw through the twine to round out the scoring.

Wolf fans celebrate.

Wolf fans celebrate their team’s sixth win in its last eight games.

All that free throw practice paid off.

After each player launched 100 shots from the charity stripe for a recent team fundraiser, the hope was the work put in might also pay off in game situations for the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team.

Boom.

Draining six straight pressure-packed freebies in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter Monday, the Wolves refused to buckle to a late charge from arch-rival South Whidbey, escaping with a 43-32 win.

The sixth victory in the last eight games for CHS, it gave the Wolves a season sweep of the Falcons while improving their record to a shiny 8-4.

Coupeville has one more non-league game left on its schedule (Saturday at Mount Vernon Christian), then will make a run at an Olympic League title.

The Wolves (2-0 in league play) close with seven straight conference games.

While the battle with South Whidbey is no longer a league affair, with the Wolves having jumped out of the Cascade Conference, local bragging rights are huge.

Having already beaten the Falcons in Langley in the season opener, Coupeville took advantage of the emotional backing of the local fans and threatened to run away with this game.

Back-to-back buckets from Julia Myers and Kacie Kiel staked the Wolves to a 31-14 lead midway through the third and the rout was on.

But then it wasn’t, as South Whidbey suddenly started hitting from long range. The young Falcons drilled three treys in an 11-2 run to get the lead down to single digits.

Wynter Thorne, who won that charity free throw contest, calmly swished a pair of free throws at the end of the third to put the lead back to 10 at 35-25, but then Coupeville’s offense went ice-cold.

Held scoreless for almost five minutes to start the fourth, the Wolves finally dropped in a bucket on a short jumper by Hailey Hammer.

Steadily chipping away, South Whidbey got the lead down to 37-32, but time ran out on the Falcons.

Forced to foul to stop the clock, the Falcons needed a miracle, and Coupeville wasn’t in a giving mood.

Madeline Strasburg, Mia Littlejohn and Makana Stone took turns going to the line for the Wolves, and all three were dead-eye marksmen, draining both of their free throws.

With the lead stretched back out and the final Falcon shots bouncing off the rim, the celebration was on.

The Wolves had opened the game on the attack, with five different players scoring in the first quarter.

Strasburg opened the flood gates with a three-point bomb that arced gracefully over a defender’s outstretched fingertips, while Kiel dropped in a pair of soft, sweet jumpers of her own.

Fellow senior Monica Vidoni, playing one of her most complete games of the year, used her height advantage to knock the Falcons around.

First she rose up to swat away a South Whidbey shot, then, on the ensuing Wolf possession, took the ball hard to the hole, overpowering her defender, banking the ball off the glass and converting a free throw for a three-point play.

While the first quarter was a round-robin affair, the second was all about Stone seizing the spotlight.

The junior roared down the floor, three steps faster than any Falcon, scoring 11 of her 13 points in the quarter.

Using a combination of whirling, twisting moves, Stone finished the game with 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.

Strasburg, getting back in the flow after missing most of the season with an injury, pumped in 11 in support of Stone, while Kiel hit for six.

Myers (4), Vidoni (3), Thorne (2), Littlejohn (2) and Hammer (2) rounded out the scorers, while Vidoni and Littlejohn each had four rebounds. Kiel doled out three assists and McKenzie Bailey gave the team a spark off the bench.

Kacie Kiel

A sweet outside shooter, Kacie Kiel is the #2 scorer for the Wolf girls.

It’s all about the points.

Well, really it isn’t. Defense, hard work, hustle, heart, intangibles — they all play major parts in whether a basketball team is successful.

But the game is decided on the scoreboard, and the team with the most points, however they got them, gets the win. So, it is kinda about the points.

Anyway, whatever side of the argument you fall on, running a list of how many points players have scored is quick, easy and eye-catching. So, we’re doing it again.

Now, before we get to the snazzy numbers, one caveat.

These are unofficial varsity scoring totals, compiled from stats I kept at home games and from coach reports from road games.

At various points, a lot of different people have kept the books for Coupeville High School this year, some more on top of things than others.

The Wolf coaches have done their best to pull things together after games, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a point or two has gone missing somewhere.

So, if you don’t like your totals, go through the score-books yourself and prove us wrong.

Or, better yet, go work on your defense and free throw shooting, cause that’s what really wins games, especially late in the season.

OK, enough chatter. The stats through Jan. 9:
