Whatever home field advantage they had disappeared in the rain.

With Ft. Nugent turned into a mud bowl by a torrential downpour Saturday, the North Whidbey Deception boys’ soccer squad couldn’t stay afloat.

Surrendering three second-half goals while trying to defend a side of the field that had become a pit of grime and despair, the booters fell 4-2 to the Strikers.

Both of North Whidbey’s goals came courtesy of its Coupeville contingent.

Matthew Kelley set up Aram Leyva in the first half for a goal that knotted things at 1-1, before getting his own score later.

Kelley’s goal came courtesy of an assist from fellow Coupeville Middle School 7th grader Jake Mitten.

Up 2-1 at the break, things were looking good, but that changed quickly after the Deception returned to the field.

With every ball disappearing into the muck and mire, the defense was continually frustrated and balls started to slip and slide through the gaps, allowing the visitors to escape with the win.

North Whidbey gets a chance at redemption next Saturday, when it stares down Island rival South Whidbey.

Mercer Island has money, Cow Town has skills.

Sparked by its Coupeville mercenaries, the North Whidbey Deception boys’ soccer squad pulled out a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

The victory propelled the booters to 5-1 on the season and keeps them within shouting distance of winning a league title.

In typical fashion, the future Wolf stars gave their opponent a brief bit of hope, then crushed said hope, hard.

Mercer Island punched in a goal off of a penalty kick to take the early lead, then the Coupeville contingent took control of the game, teaming up to score both of North Whidbey’s goals.

Aram Leyva set up the equalizer, dropping the ball behind the Mercer Island defense.

Running mate Matthew Kelley took it from there, drawing out the goalie before banging home the ball with his left foot.

Not content with a mere tie, Whidbey got the winning goal on a play set up by Coupeville’s Jake Mitten.

The lanky CMS seventh grader popped the ball into the general area of the goal, leaving it there for Leyva and Kelley to converge on.

Corralling the ball a millisecond before it skipped out of bounds, Leyva spun and shot a rocket off of the goalie’s hip, banking it in like a pool hustler taking money from a patsy.

After that, it was all up to the Deception defense, and it went into lock-down mode, sending the richniks back to their mansions crying sweet tears of regret.

“Hey, Bellevue, you think you can beat my Coupeville mercenaries? Oh, you poor, deluded fools..” (Pat Kelley photo)

Now, it gets serious.

Riding high after thrashing Snohomish United 6-0 Saturday, the North Whidbey Deception FC-01 boys’ soccer squad prepares for a first-place showdown this weekend.

The Deception, who are powered by their high-scoring Coupeville mercenaries, are 4-0 and have outscored opponents 22-4.

Awaiting them this Saturday, Oct. 10 will be Bellevue’s Lake Hills Legend, also 4-0.

The game will be at Ft. Nugent Park, with a kickoff time still to be determined.

Bellevue’s offense is not quit as explosive as Whidbey’s, but their defense is even more lock-down, with the Legends holding a 14-2 scoring advantage on the pitch this season.

In their tune-up against Snohomish, the Deception benefited from Aram Leyva’s second hat trick of the season.

The Coupeville Middle School seventh grader had his first two goals set up by schoolmate Matthew Kelley, then nailed his third score when he corralled his own missed header and knocked the rebound back in the net.

Kelley and fellow Wolf Sam Wynn each scored, while Kelley collected three assists and Sage Downes set up another score.

The Coupeville connection has combined to score 17 of North Whidbey’s 22 goals, led by Leyva, who has tallied eight.

Kelley has six, having scored in every game, while Wynn, Downes and Jake Mitten have tallied one apiece.

Put them out of their misery fast.

That’s what Aram Leyva and his teammates on the North Whidbey Deception FC-01 boys’ soccer squad wanted to do Saturday.

Playing a team that was greatly over-matched, the Deception, fueled by their Coupeville mercenaries, romped to a 5-0 win in a game that could have had twice as big a margin.

Leyva took care of a huge chunk of the scoring responsibilities, raining down a hat trick, then tossed in an assist to go with his three goals.

Fellow Wolves Matthew Kelley and Sage Downes banged home the team’s other two goals, while Kelley also collected an assist.

A few more grey hairs for the coach, but a win to save the day.

Despite squandering a three-goal lead, the North Whidbey Deception FC-01 boys’ soccer squad escaped with a thrilling 4-3 win over its Crossfire arch-rivals Saturday, thanks largely to its Coupeville mercenaries.

Matthew Kelley poked home the winning goal, off of an assist from fellow Wolf Aram Leyva, to pull out the victory.

With time running down, Leyva forced an attack on the goal, then slid the ball to Kelley, who drew the net-minder out.

Once he had the Crossfire goalie in no man’s land, Kelley popped the ball over his head for the eventual winning score.

The comeback was necessitated after the Crossfire, who had tied the Deception in two previous meetings, ripped off three straight goals to climb back into the game.

Whidbey had jumped out to a large lead off of a penalty kick, a goal set up by Kelley and a booming score from 20-yards out off of Leyva’s toe.

The win sent the Deception into sole possession of first place in their league.
