Mitch Pelroy is fighting for his dreams.

The Coupeville High School grad currently lives in Colorado, where he’s splitting time between pursuing careers in football and modeling.

On the gridiron, the former Wolf star played in the Rivals Professional Football League, which led to an invite to try out for a team in the Canadian Football League.

While camp went well, an inner thigh injury on the final day thwarted Pelroy, but just for the moment.

“Since it’s a business, it was a better luck next time type deal,” he said.

Not to be denied, Pelroy moved to Colorado Springs to join his girlfriend, Katie Grooms, and immediately started training again while looking for another opportunity.

He found it with the Colorado Springs Flames, who play in the six-team semi-pro Colorado Football Conference.

After playing cornerback and returning punts and kickoffs during his college days at the University of Montana Western, Pelroy is now dodging would-be tacklers while racking up game film as a running back.

Pelroy and the Flames finished third in the regular season standings and open the playoffs Saturday, when they host the Colorado Pirates.

The Steel City Rage host the Englewood Eagles in the other first-round game, with the league’s top two teams, the Denver Sharks and the Northern Colorado Nightmare, set to play the winners Aug. 3 in the semifinals.

The championship game goes Aug. 10.

Once the season ends, Pelroy plans to keep churning, always looking for a chance to extend his time on the field.

“I plan on trying to get an agent, and seeing what happens from there,” he said. “Hopefully get to the CFL, XFL, AFL, or overseas to Europe for another opportunity to be paid and try to keep working higher.

“Football is still the goal; once I finish the season and have my film, I’ll see how far I can make it.”

His schedule off the field has been busy as well, as a modeling career is opening new doors.

“The modeling is something that happened on accident,” Pelroy said. “Started with people asking through Instagram.

“So, slowly you meet people, and make connections; next thing I know I’m signed to ECP Models, which is an amazing agency out here, and that is picking up!”

In between blitzing people on the gridiron, Pelroy has done print and runway modeling work, as well as getting in front of the video camera.

“That has been fun,” he said. “I was just recently an extra in a local commercial for a Ford dealership, so that was awesome.”

He’s Florida-bound and he’s a pro.

Coupeville grad Mitch Pelroy has taken the next step on his journey, being selected by the Atlantic Sharks Saturday during the Rivals Professional Football League player draft.

Pelroy, coming off a stellar run as a defensive back and return specialist at the University of Montana Western, reports to training camp in Miami Feb. 1.

He went on the fifth pick in round 26 Saturday, and signed a four-year, performance-based contract with the Sharks.

“The work is just beginning, but it’s a big step in the right direction,” Pelroy said. “I can technically say I’m a pro football player now.

“Trust the process, work hard and chase those dreams while I can.”

The RPFL is an eight-team league, with four teams in Florida and four in Michigan.

The Sharks will face off with the Miami Blaze, Florida Red Wolves and South Beach Silverbacks during an eight-week schedule from March to May.

Win the title and they would advance to play the best team from Michigan in the televised league championship.

The kid who once thrilled Coupeville football fans is about to become a man who gets paid for doing what he loves.

Former Wolf legend Mitch Pelroy, a two-way star during his time in Cow Town, has been notified he will be drafted by the Rivals Professional Football League Dec. 2.

The eight-team league, based in Florida and Michigan, plays an eight-game schedule, and is a great way for players to pile up high-quality game film and attract notice from the marquee leagues — the NFL, CFL and AFL.

Pelroy, who was an All-Cascade Conference player at Coupeville, finished a stellar run at Montana Western last season, where he was a defensive back and kick returner.

After a red-shirt season, he played in 36 games across four seasons for the Bulldogs, piling up 1,122 yards returning punts and kickoffs.

Pelroy also had 55 tackles, 14 assists, two sacks, four tackles for a loss and broke up six passes while playing in the Montana Western secondary.

To prepare for the RPL combine, he trained four times a week in Bozeman with former New England Patriots linebacker Dane Fletcher.

Once at the combine, Pelroy competed in the 40 yard dash, broad jump, vertical jump, shuttle run and L-cone speed and agility drill.

He impressed the scouts and coaches on hand, earning his ticket to the draft, where he’s guaranteed of being selected.

Once he finds out his team, Pelroy will be given a performance-based incentive contract, with the possibility of guaranteed money from signing or roster bonuses.

“Getting paid to play football has been a dream since I could walk,” he wrote on Facebook. “Only time and hard work will tell.”

During his time at CHS, Pelroy was an All-Conference football player on both sides of the ball, while also playing basketball and running track for the Wolves.

He went to the state track meet in five different events and held the school record in the 200 at graduation.

Mitch Pelroy

Mitch Pelroy likely ended his college football career the way he began it — outrunning folks.

The Coupeville High School grad ripped off one last kickoff return Saturday, and saw action on both sides of the ball, as Montana Western pounded Rocky Mountain College 26-10.

The Bulldogs finished 7-4 overall, 6-4 in Frontier Conference play.

Montana Western has a slim shot at getting an at-large bid to the NAIA playoffs, but a third-place finish in its league will make it tough to earn one of the 16 postseason slots.

If Saturday was the end, Pelroy can walk away knowing he put in a very solid career playing college ball.

Over the course of five years — a red-shirt season plus four on the field — the former Wolf played in 36 games at Montana Western.

He piled up 1,122 yards returning kickoffs and punts, with 314 of that coming during his senior season.

Pelroy also had 55 tackles, 14 assists, two sacks, four tackles for a loss and broke up six passes while playing in the Bulldog secondary.

During his time at CHS, the speed demon was a football, basketball and track star.

He qualified for the state track meet in five different events and held the school record in the 200 until Jacob Smith broke it this spring.

The alumni continue to excel at the next level.

Coupeville High School grads Mitch Pelroy and Monica Vidoni played in different states Saturday, with one coming away a little happier than the other.

Pelroy and his football teammates at Montana Western pulled out a victory on Senior Night, while Vidoni’s Rainy River Community College volleyball team had its season ended a win away from nationals.

The Voyageurs fell in straight sets to Central Lakes in the district final in Minnesota, after winning a five-set thriller against Itasca the day before.

That ends Vidoni’s two-year run as a college spiker, but she still has basketball and softball seasons ahead of her at RRCC.

With his family in attendance, Pelroy ripped off kickoff returns of 35 and 23 yards as Montana Western rallied late to upend Carroll 35-28.

It was the first time the Bulldogs had successfully defended their home turf against Carroll since 1999.

Pelroy, who also had a tackle on defense, has one more regular season game against Rocky Mountain College Nov. 12.

He has 1,109 career return yards over his 35-game college gridiron career.
