Scrappy Wolves tangle with high-powered Hurricanes

The growth is evident.

While a very-young Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad wasn’t able to overcome eternal pitch powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian Friday, the Wolves put up a substantial fight in a 5-0 home loss.

After surviving heat stroke-level weather in its last game, the battle with the Hurricanes was played out on a cool prairie evening, as well.

“I saw something new out of the team,” CHS coach Jim Kunz said. “Captains Solomon Rudat and Sage Arends led from beginning to end.

“Their energy and perseverance motivated the whole team.”

MVC, a perennial playoff contender, always comes strong, but the Wolves made the ‘Canes work for their win.

“We had plenty of shots on goal,” Kunz said. “Some didn’t land, but they also had a solid goalie.”

Coupeville’s coach was also impressed with the effort his defense put up.

“Veterans Wyatt Fitch-Marron and Shiloh Sandlin worked beautifully together at center defense,” Kunz said. “(While) 8th graders Josh Richards and Aiden Wheat at outside defense proved they deserve to be on the team shutting down player after player.

“MVC has some very powerful forwards who, when given the chance, sent rockets at goalie Sam Richards,” he added.

“But after every save Sam jumped up ready to protect the goal.”

Coupeville, which sits at 1-3 on the season, gets back at it next week with two games.

The Wolves travel to La Conner Wednesday, Sept. 24, then return to Mickey Clark Field Sept. 26 to host Providence Classical Christian.

That second game is part of a Homecoming doubleheader, with soccer kicking off at 3:00 PM, followed by CHS football hosting Cedar Park Christian-Bothell at 7:00.

“It’s a great learning opportunity”

Time to start a new streak.

Playing for the third time in as many days Thursday, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team lost a Northwest 2B/1B League match for the first time since 2023.

The new-look Wolves, rebuilding after losing most of their roster to graduation after back-to-back trips to the state tourney, fell 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21 to visiting Mount Vernon Christian.

That snaps a 17-match league win streak for CHS and drops them to 1-1 in conference play, 2-2-1 overall.

The nail biter loss capped a 48-hour burst of high-intensity play in which the Wolves beat Friday Harbor at home, endured an epic road trip to Forks, then immediately jumped back on the floor to host MVC.

“The varsity showed a lot of grit and determination,” CHS coach Scout Smith said.

“Three matches and 11 sets of volleyball in three days is a lot.

“It’s not easy to show up three days in a row to play. However they never used that as an excuse; they continued to expect more of themselves, never using fatigue as an excuse.”

With Smith and her assistant coaches rockin’ stylish footwear, their players brought their A-games, but so did their opponents.

“The MVC players also showed a lot of determination,” Smith said. “Have to give them a hand for putting together a win after we battled them for four straight sets.”

With 10 matches left on the regular season schedule, including trips to La Conner and Darrington next week, the Wolves have plenty of time to grow.

“Overall it’s a great learning opportunity,” Smith said.

“I love that we get to face a lot of adversity early in the season. It only helps us to improve.

“We will go out and get the win when it matters.”

JV romps to win:

Back in action for the first time in nine days, Coupeville’s second unit was locked-in all night, rolling to a 25-6, 25-23, 15-9 victory.

The win lifts the JV to 1-0 in league play, 2-1 overall.

Coupeville’s last two opponents — Friday Harbor and Forks — only had one team in action, leaving the young Wolves to bide their time.

Given a chance to finally take the floor again, they responded, with Adeline Maynes opening things by ripping off 12 straight points on her serve.

Wolves endure, build for future

They endured until the end.

Coming off back-to-back trips to the state tourney, the 2025 season didn’t go as planned for the Coupeville High School baseball squad.

The Wolves lost players to graduation, others to family moves or injury rehabs, and still more to a simple failure to turn out.

That left Steve Hilborn’s crew scrambling to field a roster, but they did, making do with 11 players, some of whom had never played before.

And, after a rough start, the Wolves showed promise, winning six of eight in the middle part of the campaign.

The end came Thursday, with the CHS diamond squad falling 12-0 to Northwest 2B/1B League champ Mount Vernon Christian, capping a 6-13 season.

But, in their play Thursday, where they stretched the Hurricanes out to the full seven innings on Senior Night, and in their resilience all spring, the Wolves are not defined entirely by their record.

They endured, and they continued to build for the future.

Seniors Landon Roberts, who played all four years, and Jesus Madrigal will depart, but the core of the squad can return next spring.

Hopefully with more reinforcements.

Thursday, after honoring their veterans, the Wolves handed the ball one last time to Roberts, and he gave them four innings on the mound, whiffing seven.

His final moment as a CHS pitcher was a called third strike, as Lindsey’s lil’ bro painted the corner one final time.

MVC pushed two runs across in the first, another in the second, and a game-busting five in the top of the third, taking advantage of a couple of errors.

Carson Grove has three more seasons to chuck heat.

After that, Roberts and freshman Carson Grove, who came on in relief in the fifth, shut down the ‘Canes, tossing three consecutive scoreless innings.

While Mount Vernon tossed four runs on the board in the seventh to stretch out the final margin, the game felt closer than the score.

Coupeville had its chances, getting runners aboard in five of the seven frames, but came up just short of that one big base knock that would of have potentially launched a comeback.

Twice the Wolves had two runners on the basepath at the same time, but both times MVC escaped unscathed thanks to solid work on defense.

With the win, the Hurricanes will carry the top seed into the District 1 tourney next week and are a win away from punching their ticket to state.

Coupeville is done for this season, but at 5-7 in league play, finish fourth in the seven-team NWL.

Better yet, the Wolves endured, and the future of the program is brighter for that.

Camden Glover (17) and Cooper should be back on the diamond next spring.

Hurricanes nip Wolves in diamond rumble

One team is playing for a league title, the other for a strong finish to a challenging season.

Mount Vernon Christian and Coupeville High School’s baseball squads are trending in opposite direction this season, with the Hurricanes soaring and the Wolves rebuilding.

But Tuesday’s tilt was still a fairly close one, with MVC eventually slipping away for a 5-0 win on the mainland.

The loss drops Coupeville to 5-6 in Northwest 2B/1B League play (the ‘Canes are 10-1), and 6-12 overall heading into what will be their season finale Thursday afternoon.

Having been eliminated from playoff contention, the Wolves will wrap things up with a Senior Night game — honoring Landon Roberts and Jesus Madrigal — with the first pitch set for 4:00 PM.

The Wolves can also throw a wrinkle into the chase for a league title if they upend MVC Thursday, with the private school diamond men clinging to a one-game lead over Friday Harbor (9-2) in the battle for a banner.

Tuesday’s rumble was a pitcher’s duel, with Wolf junior Camden Glover whiffing eight and walking just a single batter.

But the Wolves failed to generate much heat of their own on the offensive side of the ball, limited to two base knocks and a walk.

Mount Vernon starting pitcher Carson Wilms retired the first 11 batters he faced, with Glover finally breaking through with a two-out single in the top of the fourth.

Other than that, the Wolves only burst of activity at the plate came in the sixth, when Chris Zenz walked and Landon Roberts poked a single.

But, with two runners aboard, Coupeville left them stranded, ending the frame on a strikeout and flyout.

The Hurricanes netted the only two runs they would need in the bottom of the first, then added two more tallies in the third and a final one in the sixth.

No trophies for you!

Four Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams advanced to the state tournament this season, but none of them will be bringing a trophy home.

Which is not surprising, considering they combined to go 1-6 at the big dance.

Both the La Conner and Mount Vernon Christian boys’ hoops squads were ushered out the side door after a single game, with the former falling 69-51 to Napavine and the latter being bounced 60-44 by Liberty Bell.

On the girls’ side of things, La Conner was annihilated 66-37 by Mabton, while the MVC girls were the lone NWL team to get more than one game.

The Hurricanes, who were seeded #6, lost their opener 51-28 to Brewster, but were seeded high enough to get a second crack at the tourney.

The MVC girls initially stayed alive with a 50-41 win over Columbia, before falling 50-29 to Reardan and 49-35 to Liberty (Spangle), which eliminated them a game shy of playing for a trophy.

While that stings, things could be worse.

The Rainier girls, sitting at 20-3, were ranked #1 heading into the 2B state tourney, then promptly were upset by #8 Northwest Christian (Colbert) and #9 Mabton, bringing an unceremonious end to their run.
