They had them on the ropes but couldn’t land the knockout punch.

Facing a Mount Vernon Christian squad which went undefeated in league play this season, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team carried a lead into the fourth quarter in Saturday’s District 1/2 tourney semifinal.

But the Hurricanes rallied, to a 14-1 tune across the last eight minutes, escaping with a 39-30 victory on their home floor, sending the Wolves to the consolation side of the bracket.

Coupeville, now 8-13 on the season, can still net a return trip to state, but it will take three wins in five days.

All of those clashes would play out in the CHS gym, beginning with a Tuesday tilt with Orcas Island.

Beat the Vikings, who they knocked off twice in the regular season, and the Wolves return to their home court Thursday to play either Friday Harbor or Auburn Adventist Academy.

If they’re still alive, Brad Sherman’s squad plays either MVC or La Conner Saturday with a trip to the big dance at stake.

The first two times Coupeville squared off with MVC this season, the Wolves lost 69-50 and 61-47.

Meeting #3 was a different story, however, as CHS clamped down on defense and led at the end of each of the first three quarters.

Neither team racked up many points in the opening frame, with a Hunter Bronec three-ball staking Coupeville to a 6-4 lead at the first break.

From there, the battle was of the royal variety, with the Wolves holding their own against their highly ranked foes.

Up 19-16 at the half, then 29-25 heading into the fourth, Coupeville held the ‘Canes down, until Lucas Millenaar erupted in the final frame.

The MVC senior, who had been held to four points on the night, went off for 13 in the fourth, providing 99.2% of the offense during a game-closing 14-1 surge.

While his team fell just short, Brad Sherman gave postgame kudos to his players.

“Our boys played their hearts out,” said the CHS coach.

The Battlin’ Bronec Brothers led the way, with Hurlee tossing in a team-high 12 points and Hunter adding seven in support of his twin.

Chase Anderson (6), Camden Glover (3), and Jack Porter (2) rounded out the scoring, with Landon Roberts, Johnny Porter, and Malachi Somes also seeing floor time for the Wolves.

Three different CHS players reached personal milestones in the game, with Hurlee Bronec (261) cracking the 250-point club, while Hunter Bronec (200) and Camden Glover (102) also hit noteworthy numbers.

New week, new focus.

Yes, Saturday’s 61-22 playoff loss at Mount Vernon Christian stings for the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball team.

But the defeat, coming at the hands of the top seed in the District 1/2 tourney, doesn’t end the Wolves shot at advancing to state.

Coupeville, now 9-11 on the campaign, can still get to the big dance with a string of strong performances next week.

The Wolves host Friday Harbor, a team they have beaten twice this season, Tuesday night in a loser-out game.

Win and CHS advances to host either Orcas Island or Auburn Adventist Academy Thursday, and a victory there would put them in a winner-to-state game Saturday, again on their own court.

Saturday’s game slipped away early, as Mount Vernon Christian came out hot and never cooled down.

Raining down eight three-balls, the Hurricanes went on big runs in each of the first three quarters to put the game away.

Up 17-4 after one quarter, MVC stretched the margin to 31-11 at the half and 50-13 through three.

Coupeville made its strongest stand in the final frame, with Teagan Calkins scoring five of her team-high eight points, including netting her second three-ball of the night.

The Hurricanes put four players into double-digit scoring, as Alexa Brown topped all shooters with 16 points.

Ruthie Rozema (13), Avery McCullough (12), and Carolanne Votipka (10) also had hot hands for the ‘Canes.

Haylee Armstrong slices through the defense.

Haylee Armstrong (6), Lyla Stuurmans (2), Mia Farris (2), Danica Strong (2), and Katie Marti (2) scored for CHS in support of Calkins.

Jada Heaton, Madison McMillan, Capri Anter, Tenley Stuurmans, Sydney Van Dyke, and Adeline Maynes also saw floor time for the Wolves, with the latter two making their varsity hoops debut.

Growth matters most.

As her squad battles through its season, Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball coach Scout Smith is looking for steady improvement from young players building for their future.

And she’s seeing it, even in tough losses like the one the Wolves endured on their home floor Tuesday night.

Facing off with “a well-coached, well-organized (team) that were clinical finishers,” Coupeville fell 54-25 to brutally efficient Mount Vernon Christian.

The loss drops CHS to 4-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 5-6 overall, with two games left on the 2024-2025 schedule.

With contests still ahead against La Conner and Friday Harbor, the Wolves want to finish strong, and Smith came away from Tuesday’s loss believing they will.

“The team fought hard for much of the game, and I am proud of how we never backed away from a tough opponent,” she said.

“A lot of credit to our team for being flexible and continuing to adapt and grow throughout the season. We will learn from this loss and turn all focus to La Conner.”

MVC bolted out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter of play Tuesday, before stretching the halftime lead to 31-10.

Coupeville played its best ball in the second half, fighting hard while coming up just short in 15-12 and 8-3 frames.

Haylee Armstrong paced the Wolves with a team-high eight points, with Lexis Drake, Adeline Maynes, and Ava Lucero each going off for five in support.

Capri Anter and Marin Winger rounded out the scoring, each slipping a free throw through the net, with Jeann Nitta, Amelia Crowder, Chelsi Stevens, and Sydney Van Dyke also seeing floor time.

You know when it’s below freezing outside, and you leave the faucet to where it will drip all night long?

Watching Mount Vernon Christian slowly, surely pull away to beat the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team Tuesday night was kind of like that.

The visitors didn’t do anything all that spectacular — their best dunk attempt would have generated a stifled yawn on a court in Seattle — but they were consistent in every facet of the game.

Drip, drip, drip, and, in the end, that equaled a 61-47 win over the Wolves.

The loss drops Coupeville to 5-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play with two games left and leaves it sitting behind MVC (7-0) and La Conner (7-1), which hosts the Wolves this Friday.

Now 6-11 overall after having a three-game winning streak snapped, Brad Sherman’s squad played its best ball Tuesday in the opening quarter.

With Hurlee Bronec and Camden Glover banging away down low and holding their own with a lanky group of Hurricane post players, the Wolves trailed 21-18 at the first break.

Along the way they claimed the lead four different times, with Landon Roberts drilling the bottom out of the bucket on a three-ball to earn the biggest roar from the crowd.

Hurlee Bronec almost matched the ovation, however, when he snagged a pass from Chase Anderson and whirled through a pack of Hurricanes to slap home a layup a half of a tick before the first quarter buzzer sang its song.

But while the Wolves held the lead at various points in the first frame, they couldn’t get even after that.

MVC stretched the margin out to 13 midways through the second, before CHS closed on a 5-1 min-tear.

Malachi Somes kicked off the surge by taking a charge on defense, with Glover punctuating things by snagging a rebound and converting it into a second-chance bucket.

Down 35-26 at the half, Coupeville got as close as six points in the third quarter and did it twice.

Hurlee Bronec drained a three-ball from the top the first time, while Anderson made a phenomenal save on a runaway ball, before flipping it over his head to Roberts for a breakaway bucket the second time.

Showcasing ice water in their veins to match the less-than-toasty temps outside the gym, the Hurricanes closed the quarter on a 9-2 tear, however, and the Wolves never got the deficit back to single-digits.

Hurlee Bronec, continuing his recent rise as a go-to scorer, rattled the rims for a team-high 14 points, and gained entrance to the 200-point club.

The Wolf senior has 213 career varsity points and counting as his final season begins to wind down.

Roberts (9), Glover (8), Anderson (8), Jack Porter (6), and Hunter Bronec (2) also tallied points, with Johnny Porter and Somes contributing on defense.

The action came in waves Tuesday night.

Ultimately that made for a tricky ride, however, as the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball team soared like seasoned surfers at times, only to be swept under by a brutal undertow at other moments.

From the giddiness of hitting five of their first six shots, to the despair of being on the wrong end of a 21-0 run later, the Wolves experienced all the colors of the rainbow.

By the time the clock ticked to 0:00, CHS was on the losing end of a 61-39 clash with visiting Mount Vernon Christian, dropping the home heroes to 4-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-9 overall.

MVC is a pristine 7-0 in conference action and is built to make a run at a state title, so the loss was not unexpected.

How we got there was, however, just that – a bit unexpected.

The Wolves hit the floor radiating intensity and started dropping daggers and getting their fans hyped up.

Teagan Calkins swished a three-ball from the right side of the floor moments into play, then came back around to bang home a bucket off a lob from Danica Stong.

Add two points for Strong herself — set up by a sweet dish off the fingertips of Lyla Stuurmans, and Coupeville was sitting pretty up 7-0.

Mount Vernon never panicked, though, hitting the first three of its ten three-balls, and slowly fought back to a 14-14 tie by the end of the quarter.

Calkins remained at her furious best, channeling her “Red Dragon” persona as she banged away for 10 points in the opening frame.

Most of her buckets were set up by precision passes from her teammates, with Mia Farris and Katie Marti picking up assists as well, and the Wolves offense was clicking.

Until it wasn’t.

MVC closed the first quarter with back-to-back treys, then peppered the net for the first 15 points in the second.

Lyla Stuurmans finally broke the drought, nailing a jumper off a pass from Haylee Armstrong, but the Hurricanes slapped home two more baskets to carry a 33-16 lead into the halftime break.

And yet, there was real hope.

Coupeville cut the lead down to 10 early in the third, saw the deficit swell back up to 17, then stormed back within eight at 40-32.

Calkins continued to singe the net from all angles, while Tenley Stuurmans tickled the twine on several free throw attempts to keep things interesting.

The ‘Canes offense was too much to totally shut down, though, as the visitors knocked down three-balls #8-10 in the final quarter to make the game seem like more of a runaway than it really was.

Right before the final buzzer Calkins slipped a free throw through the net for her 19th, and final, point of the night.

That gives the Wolf junior an even 200 for her varsity career, as she becomes the 65th CHS girl to crack the club between 1974-2025.

Strong popped for seven points in support, with Tenley Stuurmans (5), Farris (4), and Lyla Stuurmans (4) also scoring.

With those four points, Lyla Stuurmans moves to 238 for her career, slipping past Wolf legend Breeanna Messner (235) to become the #50 all-time scorer in program history.

Armstrong, Marti, Madison McMillan, and Jada Heaton rounded out the rotation for Coupeville, which returns to action this Friday, Jan. 31, when it travels to La Conner.
