Eat, drink, bid, support the Booster Club

The biggest night in Coupeville athletics is back on the calendar.

The booster club’s annual dinner and auction, which got dinged a bit by the pandemic, is back in full force and going down Saturday, Nov. 11.

Doors open at 4:30 PM at the Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge, which is located at 63 Jacobs Road.

Dinner, provided by Serendipity Catering and Events, begins at 6:00, with a dessert auction set for 6:30.

This year is NOT a crab feed but features a “yummy menu!” according to Booster Club bigwig Jess Lucero.

“If someone wants a vegetarian dish, they should request it at the time they purchase their ticket from a board member,” she added.

A silent auction and raffles will run through the evening, with a live auction at 7:00 emceed by The Velvet Voice of the Prairie himself, Dale Sherman.

Among the items up for grabs include a one-week stay at a Maui condo, a sunset cruise, and a four-day, three-night stay at a townhome in Park City, Utah — home of the Sundance Film Festival.

There will also be a variety of themed baskets, including Italian dinner and wine and cheese assortments, as well as Sherman beef, running and Patagonia gear, and local artwork.

Cost for the night is $55 per person, or $400 for a table of eight.

All proceeds go to help the Coupeville Booster Club, which provides major funding for school athletics.

The organization annually awards eight $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors, while also providing a yearly stipend to high school and middle school sports programs.

The club provides roses for Senior Night festivities, varsity letters for Wolf athletes, meal money and goodie bags for road trips, and numerous team improvement items.

These have ranged from literature and DVDs to tarps, weight room equipment, batting cages, upgrades to school athletic fields and facilities, and t-shirts for cancer awareness nights.

The Wall of Fame in the CHS gym, which documents accomplishments from 100+ years of Coupeville athletics?

It wouldn’t exist without the support of the boosters, who provided the biggest financial contribution to its development, and continue to handle updates.

“There is always hope”

They’re turning their pain into positivity.

Friends and family of Brandon Graham want to help others in emotional need, doing everything they can to offer an alternative to suicide.

Graham, a 2007 Coupeville High School grad who died last summer, had a huge impact on those around him.

Fellow CHS grads Debbie Vescovi and Michelle Armstrong launched a foundation in his honor, which will “offer support for Coupeville and Oak Harbor schools, with a focus on mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and anti-bullying efforts.”

Money raised will be used to provide resources for students and training for teachers and parents, with an emphasis on bringing together local law enforcement, chaplains, and motivational speakers.

The foundation now has an active website, and is holding a luau fundraiser this Saturday, Aug. 6.

The dinner, which will feature a silent auction, is at the Nordic Lodge in Coupeville (63 Jacobs Rd.), with things starting at 4 PM.

Tickets, which are $30 for single admission, or $50 for a couple, can be obtained at Polished Studio in Oak Harbor (861 SE Pioneer Way), by emailing thebrandongrahamfoundation@gmail.com, or on the foundation’s website.

The plan is to make the dinner a yearly fundraiser.

If they can help other families avoid the pain of a loved one’s suicide, foundation organizers will have reached their goal.

“Mental health wellness needs to be a number one priority for our children,” they said.

“We, as a community, can provide our youth with tools to be able to work through the problems they have, and know that the community has their back.”

Memorial service Saturday for Coach Manker

A memorial service for Coupeville High School soccer coach Gary Manker will be held Saturday, Feb. 10.

It will be at the Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge Hall (63 Jacobs Road) and run from 2-4 PM.

Manker, who coached both girls and boys soccer, was a noted “goalkeeper whisperer,” working with the Wolf net-minders over the years.

He passed away suddenly Jan. 26.

Manker, who was born in Petaluma, Calif. May 4, 1968, is survived by wife Patti Manker, son Garritt Manker (Talisa), daughters Ashley Bailey (Eric), Amanda Smith (Ryan), stepchildren Riley, Tim and JT Quinn and grandchildren Adeline, Sawyer and Lillie.
