Coupeville set the table and Oak Harbor responded.

With two of its three goals coming on assists from Coupeville Middle School players, the BU13 North Whidbey Islanders FC01 soccer squad rolled to a 3-1 win over Kent Black Saturday.

Aram Leyva and Matthew Kelley each notched assists, while Leyva hit pay-dirt on a first-half goal only to have it waved off on an off-sides call.

The Wolf duo were joined by Sage Downes, Jake Mitten and Michael Laska, all of whom had shots on goal.

North Whidbey rained down shots from all sides, with a frazzled Kent defense inadvertently heading one shot into its own goal.

With a fired-up Leyva controlling both ends of the field, the Islanders ran wild on a team they had tied 0-0 the last time they played.

It was the start of a busy day for the Wolf players, with four of them (all except Leyva) moving on to play a basketball game in the afternoon.

Coupeville’s young guns continue to sparkle on the soccer pitch.

This time around it was CMS 7th grader James Wood, who blasted home a goal in his team’s victory Saturday.

Paced by scores from Wood and Oak Harbor duo Jadyn and Alex Johnston, the North Whidbey Islanders Boys FC-01 squad bounced rival South Whidbey 3-1 for its first win of the spring.

The Islanders bring together the best of Central and North Whidbey, with eight players hailing from Coupeville (six 6th graders and two 7th graders) and eight from Oak Harbor.

Coached by Ryan Baker of Oak Harbor, the booters are playing in a league that runs through April 4.

The Islanders get right back at it this Saturday, Feb. 28, when they host Kent Black 1:30 PM at Wildcat Stadium in Oak Harbor.
