United by baseball.

Living the hardball life often pulls Coupeville’s Joey Lippo and Oak Harbor’s James Besaw to different parts of the country, but then the diamond is just as likely to reunite them.

The duo, who first met when they were just a year old and their parents were in the Navy, are now in their second year as ballplayers at their respective colleges.

Where it all started.

Lippo suits up for the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where he plays baseball and golf, while Besaw anchors the diamond team at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

With a new college baseball season kicking off, the pair, who grew up playing ball together on Whidbey, are slated to pass each other in the night this campaign.

Both of their schools are slated to compete in the RUSSMATT Central Florida Invitational Mar. 13-20, though Presque Isle and Wisconsin-Superior are not scheduled to play against each other.

But the diamond reunion gives moms Teresa Besaw and Connie Lippo, plus dad Jim Besaw, a chance to jet away to warmer climates during spring break and watch both young men play.

“It’s been fun to watch them grow up together,” Teresa Besaw said. “Especially watching Joey, who was once half James size, grow to be taller than James.

“Our schedules will be busy in Florida, but it will be fun to watch each other’s boys play college ball.”

Earlier days.

The week-long RUSSMATT Central Florida Invitational draws 250+ colleges each year, with teams from NCAA D-1, 2, and 3, as well as NAIA and JUCO squads.

Presque Isle is down to play five days, while Wisconsin-Superior is slated for six. Most days feature doubleheaders for the schools.

While Besaw and Lippo are currently playing for different colleges and repped different Whidbey high schools, they often played either together, or on rival teams, in little league, select baseball, and fall ball.

They also landed on the same roster during their time at Green River College in Auburn, where they played with Coupeville brothers CJ and Hunter Smith.

It’s a conundrum.

The name of the blog is Coupeville Sports, and that hasn’t changed since it debuted back in August, 2012.

Which would imply not a whole lot of the 9,004 articles previously published on here have focused on athletes wearing the uniforms of Oak Harbor or South Whidbey High School.

But … I am a sucker for free photos, and the page hits those pics generate.

So, here we go.

The pics, shot by John Fisken, come from Thursday’s varsity non-conference tilt between the Wildcat and Falcon girls basketball teams, a game won 46-35 by Oak Harbor.

Having already beaten Coupeville, the ‘Cat girls are the unofficial Whidbey Island champs for the 2021-2022 season.

They join Coupeville’s boys, who swept Oak Harbor and South Whidbey to rule the hardwood.

It’s a matchup which doesn’t happen often enough.

With Oak Harbor High School being a 3A institution, and Coupeville repping the much smaller 2B classification, the next-door neighbors rarely face off.

Saturday was one of those rare opportunities however, as the Wildcats welcomed the Wolves to Oak Town for a girls basketball rumble.

Not having to travel very far from his house, wanderin’ photographer John Fisken was on scene, and the pics seen above and below are courtesy him.

To see everything he shot — including Senior Night festivities for the OHHS cheerleaders — you can pop over to the links below.

Tough start, better finish.

Missing four key players Saturday, the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball team struggled in the first half at Oak Harbor, before finishing strongly.

Unfortunately, the 2B Wolves, who only had seven players hit the floor, couldn’t complete the comeback against their 3A neighbors and fell 54-33.

The non-conference loss, coming in a game thrown together at virtually the last moment, drops Coupeville to 6-5.

The Wolves return to the floor Tuesday, hosting 2A Sedro-Woolley in another game recently added to the schedule.

After that comes a three-game stretch which will determine Coupeville’s playoff fate.

The Wolves travel to Friday Harbor Feb. 4, trek to La Conner Feb. 10, then host Friday Harbor on Senior Night Feb. 12

Two of the three 2B schools in the seven-team Northwest 2B/1B League make the postseason, and powerhouse La Conner (3-0 overall against Coupeville and Friday Harbor) has (almost) clinched the #1 seed.

The Wolves, who are 0-1 in the three-team mini-rumble, sit a half-game up on Friday Harbor (0-2) in the pursuit of the #2 seed.

Whichever of the two schools gets that second slot faces Auburn Adventist in a loser-out district playoff game in Coupeville Feb. 15.

Win there, and you play in the district title game Feb. 17 — also at CHS — with both teams in that game earning trips to the state tourney.

While the next two weeks will determine if Coupeville’s girls can get to the big dance for the first time since 2016, Saturday’s game was a chance to go toe-to-toe with the biggest school on Whidbey Island.

Putting nine girls into the scoring column — led by 13 points from Heidy Hurtado — Oak Harbor jumped on the undermanned Wolves, however.

Up 19-6 by the first break, the Wildcats stretched their lead out to 36-14 at halftime.

Coupeville put together its best run in the third quarter, with freshmen Savina Wells and Lyla Stuurmans knocking down three-balls during a 10-4 surge.

As she reflected on the game, and the strong effort put out by the players she had in uniform, CHS coach Megan Smith was philosophical about things.

“Lots of turnovers in the first half really hurt us,” she said. “Made some adjustments at halftime and came out much stronger in the second half.

“Put up a good fight, but it was just too late into the game to turn it on,” Smith added. “Good learning game though.”

Junior gunner Maddie Georges tied Hurtado for game-high honors, flipping the nets on four treys as she rolled up 13 points of her own.

Savina Wells backed her up with nine points, including a perfect six-for-six performance at the free throw line, while Stuurmans added her three-ball.

Everyone who played for Coupeville scored Saturday, with Nezi Keiper, Izzy Wells, Audrianna Shaw, and Carolyn Lhamon each netting a bucket.

No JV game:

Saturday’s Island rivalry matchup was varsity only, with Coupeville’s second squad taking the night off.

With another solid game Saturday, Maddie Georges moves into 55th place on the CHS girls career scoring chart.

Oak Harbor and South Whidbey battle for Whidbey wrestling supremacy. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

There’s no wrasslin’ in Coupeville, so we have to wander off to other towns if we want to see grapplers at work.

Photographer John Fisken was in Oak Harbor Wednesday, and the photos above and below capture the Wildcats facing off with Island rival South Whidbey.

I won’t pretend to know who a single one of these wrestlers is, but I’m happy to pass on the pics in exchange for page hits.
