CHS netters swat Rivals

They flipped the script.

Garnering a bit of revenge, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team nipped host East Jefferson 3-2 Monday in Port Townsend to split the season series with their non-conference foes.

The victory, a reversal of a season-opening 3-2 loss to the Rivals, lifts the Wolves to 2-1 on the season, with a home match against Granite Falls set for Friday.

This time out, CHS swept the singles matches, while also collecting a win at #1 doubles to stay ahead of a team that is a mash-up of Chimacum and Port Townsend players.

The match was a tight one, however, with that doubles victory coming down to a third-set tiebreaker for Dahlia Miller and Aleksia Jump.

 

Monday’s results:

 

Varsity:

1st Singles — Tenley Stuurmans won 6-0, 6-0

2nd Singles — Milana Light won 6-3, 6-3

1st Doubles — Dahlia Miller/Aleksia Jump won 6-4, 4-6, 10-3

2nd Doubles — Kauri Hamilton/Jovanah Villagomez lost 7-5, 6-3

3rd Doubles — Hailey Goldman/Hazel Goldman lost 6-2, 6-0

Rivals edge Wolves in close contest

They were a hit or two away.

The Coupeville High School baseball squad put 14 runners aboard Monday in Port Townsend but couldn’t get enough of them home in what became a 7-5 loss to East Jefferson.

The non-conference defeat, which kicks off a week in which the Wolves are slated to play four games in six days, drops CHS to 3-2 on the season.

Coupeville gets right back at it Tuesday with a trip to Darrington for a Northwest 2B/1B League clash, before hosting Darrington Thursday and East Jefferson Saturday in a rematch which will feature a cancer fundraiser.

Monday’s tilt started in favor of the hosts, who are a mash-up of Chimacum and Port Townsend, before the Wolves made things interesting in the middle of the game.

East Jefferson pushed two runners across in the bottom of the first, then tacked on another tally in the second, while Coupeville struggled to get its offense going.

The Wolves wiped away a somewhat sluggish start by showcasing a solid knowledge of the strike zone in the top of the third. And a willingness to embrace the pain.

Three consecutive walks, with Leo Rodriguez and Chase Anderson getting plunked, loaded the bases, with Camden Glover lofting an RBI sac fly to left to get his team on the board.

While East Jefferson escaped after that, the Wolves put together their best offensive surge in the fourth, plating three runners to retake the lead at 4-3.

Walks were again key, but a Chris Zenz RBI single — Coupeville’s first hit on the afternoon — was big.

In a recurring theme, though, the Wolves left runners on base, as they frequently came close to breaking things wide open, only to come up just short.

East Jefferson, which outhit CHS 10-3, put together its own three-run rally in the bottom of the fourth, reclaiming the advantage at 6-4.

This time, the Rivals didn’t give the lead back.

The teams traded runs to make it 7-5, with Coupeville scoring in the bottom of the sixth thanks to doubles from Anderson and Glover, but the Wolves were unable to get all the way back a second time.

CHS coach Steve Hilborn used three pitchers in the game, with Coop Cooper, Carson Grove, and Trent Thule combining to record nine strikeouts across six innings.

Thule, who also picked up four walks as a hitter, came on to throw the final two frames, topping the Wolf hurlers with four K’s.

Coupeville’s defense played strongly behind the mound trio, as well, playing error-free ball.

Diamond men duel with big city boys

The final score doesn’t tell all.

While Meridian tacked on some runs late to make its 16-7 win Saturday over visiting Coupeville seem more lopsided, the diamond clash was mostly a back-and-forth affair.

And while the non-conference loss drops the Wolf baseball squad to 1-1 on the season, delivering a strong effort against a traditional power, especially one repping a larger student body, is a true positive for Steve Hilborn’s team.

Coupeville, which kicks off Northwest 2B/1B League play next week with a home-and-away series against Friday Harbor, got on the board first Saturday.

The Wolves picked up four of their 10 walks in the top of the first, with Carson Grove gliding home to score on a passed ball.

While Meridian responded with five runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame, CHS picked up two tallies in the second to cut things back to 5-3.

Free passes were again key to Coupeville’s offensive efforts, with Chris Zenz, Chase Anderson, and Grove showing off eagle eyes at the plate.

Camden Glover capped things with an RBI single, one of three base-knocks the senior had on the day.

Off to a sizzlin’ start, he’s racked up seven hits across just the first two games.

From there, both teams picked up a run, before Meridian pushed five runs across in both the fourth and fifth innings to widen the gap.

Even as the game threatened to slip away, the Wolves continued to scrap for runs, however, scoring three in the top of the fifth.

Leo Rodriguez smacked two hits Saturday in Bellingham.

The big blow was a two-run double to left field off the bat of Leo Rodriguez, as he put together one of his best performances in a Wolf uniform.

On the mound, Coupeville split duties between hurlers Coop Cooper, Glover, Grove, and Anderson, with the latter making his first appearance on the baseball diamond since his sophomore season.

Now a senior, Anderson transitioned to track and field as a junior, earning two medals at the state meet, and he competed in this year’s opening track meet Wednesday in La Conner.

Saturday, he picked up two strikeouts in an inning of work, while Cooper (5), Glover (1), and Grove (2) made it 10 K’s for the team.

Road warriors earn hardwood split

Another day, another city.

The Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball teams survived another road trip Tuesday, this one coming to Everett to play Northshore Christian Academy.

Now, the Wolves get to break a two-week-plus drought by staying home, sweet home for their next three clashes, beginning with a royal rumble Thursday against King’s.

After that, CMS hosts Lakewood Mar. 3 and Sultan Mar. 9, before venturing back out on the bus for the season’s final two adventures at South Whidbey and Granite Falls.

 

How Tuesday played out:

 

Level 1:

Coupeville’s top squad captured its first win of the season, holding off NCA 27-20 to get to 1-2 on the campaign.

The Wolves eased out to a 6-4 lead through one quarter of action, before stretching the halftime margin to 13-8.

While its hosts sliced the deficit down to 19-17 heading into the fourth frame, CMS came up big across the final seven minutes to seal the deal.

Anna Powers popped for four of her game-high nine points in the final quarter to provide a nice spark for the Wolves.

Laurel Crowder banked in eight in support of Powers, with Kaleigha Millison (4), Cami Van Dyke (4), and Zayne Roos (2) rounding out the scorers.

Aubrey Flowers, Finley Helm, Claire Lachnit, Ava Alford, and Sabrina Judnich also saw floor time for the victorious Wolves.

 

Level 2:

Coupeville jumped out to an early lead but then stalled out on offense in the second half, resulting in a narrow 22-15 loss.

The Wolves, who sit at 0-3 on the season, trailed 6-4 at the first break, before claiming an 11-8 lead at the half thanks to some big buckets from Annabelle Cundiff.

The third and fourth quarters didn’t go quite as well, with CMS limited to just a single bucket in each frame.

Cundiff and Daisy Leedy-Bonifas paced the Wolves with four points each, with Halle Black (2), Alford (2), Juniper Dotson (2), and Arianna Vinson (1) also notching points.

Amira Anunciado, Nikolette Dunham, Addison Jacobson, Ellie Callahan, Millie Somes, Reagan Green, Judnich, and Autumn Hunt rounded out the rotation.

 

Level 3:

Northshore Christian only goes two teams deep, so Coupeville’s third squad didn’t get a chance to thunk its rivals.

Young Wolves tangle with Turks

This time they got to make the bus tires go round and round.

After having a scheduled trip to Granite Falls denied by bad off-Island weather Wednesday, the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball teams made it all the way to the wilds of Sultan Thursday afternoon.

Squaring off with the always-feisty Turks, the Wolf hardwood heroes brought their A-games across three titanic tilts, before returning home, ready to do it all again next week.

How the day played out:

 

Level 1:

Coupeville jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t hold off a high-powered Sultan squad which roared back to claim a 36-20 win.

The loss drops the Wolves top squad to 0-2 on the still-young season.

With three different players tallying a bucket in the first frame, CMS staked itself to a 6-2 lead at the first break, but then the Turks found a new groove.

Dropping in double-digit scoring in each of the remaining quarters, the hosts pulled ahead 15-8 at the half, before carrying a 25-12 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Coupeville put together its best offensive run in the fourth, with Emma Green knocking down six of her team-high eight points, but time eventually ran out on the scrappy Wolves.

Anna Powers and Laurel Crowder each banked in four points to back Green, with Kaleigha Millison and Finley Helm adding a bucket apiece to round out the attack.

Aubrey Flowers, Cami Van Dyke, Bella Sandlin, and Ava Alford also saw floor time for the Wolves.

 

Level 2:

Sultan roared out to a 20-6 lead through one quarter of action and never slowed down, claiming a 49-8 triumph to drop CMS to 0-2 on the season.

The Wolves scored all of their points in the first half, failing to net a point across the third and fourth quarters.

Annabelle Cundiff, Reagan Green, Autumn Hunt, and Claire Lachnit finished with two points apiece for Coupeville, with Amira Anunciado, Sabrina Judnich, and Sandlin rounding out the rotation.

 

Level 3:

Coupeville’s first win of the season at any level came thanks to a consistent offense and a plucky defense.

The Wolves third unit, which didn’t get a chance to play together in the season opener against South Whidbey, held on for an 18-12 victory with 6th grader Halle Black accounting for eight of her team’s points.

Sophia Burley (4), Daisy Leedy-Bonifas (4), and Juniper Dotson (2) also kept the scorebook keeper busy, with Danielle Halsing, Ruby Folkestad, and Millie Somes bringing heat on the defensive end of the floor.

 

What’s next:

Coupeville travels to Everett Feb. 24 to play Northshore Christian Academy, then gets three straight rumbles at home, beginning with a Feb. 26 clash against Cascade League powerhouse King’s.

The Granite Falls games have been rescheduled for the end of the season and will go down (weather permitting) Mar. 12.
