Katie Marti knocks down a bucket. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The record is safe, it would seem.

When Brianne King finished her torrid run as a Coupeville High School basketball player in the early 2000’s, she had rippled the nets for a school-record 1,549 points.

And that mark has been untouched by any Wolf since then, girl or boy, even after Logan Downes claimed the all-time male mark at the school last season, finishing with 1,305.

But while I can 99.99999% guarantee King’s mark is not falling during the 2024-2025 season, that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of movement on the all-time girls’ scoring chart.

Across the past 50 seasons, there are 247 girls whose varsity baskets I’ve been able to track down, though that first season is still AWOL largely thanks to Wallie Funk being sexist and not doing his job properly at the Whidbey News-Times back in 1974.

But we go with what we have, while continuing to dig.

Seniors Katie Marti (#59), Lyla Stuurmans (#64), and Mia Farris (#89) lead seven active players on the list, while Madison McMillan is just seven points shy of cracking the top 100 scorers as well.

The chase goes on, and gets underway this coming Monday, Dec. 2, when the Wolves host Mount Baker in the season opener.

Let the nets start kickin’.

Chase Anderson swoops to the hoop. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The chase begins again.

Last season was capped by Coupeville High School senior Logan Downes finishing his run as the #1 career male scorer in Wolf basketball’s 107-year history.

A record which had been untouched for close to two decades has been surpassed, but time moves on, and a different batch of Wolves is ready to make their own run at the record.

Of the 420 boys I’ve recorded as having scored in a CHS varsity hoops game — the ’30s and ’40s are still a vast, but likely low-scoring, unknown — four are still students at the school.

Junior Chase Anderson, who has racked up 260 points while playing with Downes, is the leading active scorer, and is just 39 points away from cracking the top 100 all-time.

A little further back are senior brothers Hunter and Hurlee Bronec, and junior Aiden O’Neill, though the latter is sidelined after a football injury required serious surgery.

So, questions abound.

How many new Wolves will register a varsity bucket this season and join the club? And how high can Anderson soar as he climbs the career scoring ladder?

Only time, and the scorebooks, will tell.

Jacob Lujan lines up a shot. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

They’re chasing those buckets.

Three games into the season, 17 different Coupeville Middle School basketball players have made the scoreboard pop.

After opening the season with three straight games in their own gym, the Wolves play their next four in rival encampments.

Adapting to different gyms, while still hitting the bottom of the net, is an art form, so time will tell which players will rise to the moment.

Going forward, this is where the Wolves stand through Nov. 22.

If I added up the point totals from the scorebooks correctly, that is…

Jack Porter hauls in a pass. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

These stats will go past nine.

Having finished the regular season at 5-4 overall, 1-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, the Coupeville High School football team is off to La Conner Monday for a half-game tiebreaker with Friday Harbor.

That mini game, set for a 5:30 PM kickoff, will decide the league champ and award one team a playoff berth, with the winner hosting a team from District 4 for a spot in the state tourney.

Lillian Ketterling is a deadly assassin on the soccer pitch. (Parker Hammons photo)

They’re on a first name basis with the net.

Seven Coupeville High School soccer players have netted a goal this season, with seniors having accounted for 13 of 21 scores.

There’s still plenty of time left for the scoring race to shift, with the Wolf varsity scheduled for at least three more games, and the JV down to clash with La Conner this week.

Where things stand through Oct. 28:

Varsity:

Cael Wilson – 6
Angel Partida – 5
Sage Arends – 3
Preston Epp – 2
Brian Thompson – 2

JV:
