#LetOurKidsRace.

That’s the hashtag catching fire, as parents, including some from Coupeville, are asking Snohomish County Council members to help them preserve access to a facility in Monroe built and funded by racing families.

The property in question houses the Washington Quarter Midget Association and sits near the Evergreen Speedway.

WQMA has used the property since 2007 to train young drivers and give them their first racing adventure.

Among those behind the wheel have been Coupeville sisters Finley and Scotlyn Helm, who have been piling up the trophies and the stories here on Coupeville Sports.

Finley Helm

Scotlyn Helm

Their dad, Jerry Helm, is the Chief at Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue and has been bitten by the racing bug himself.

Mom Lindsey is a teacher at Coupeville Elementary who specializes in kicking unholy amounts of booty as an internationally feared taekwondo champ.

With precocious lil’ bro Kasen already working as a mechanic for the family’s racing dynasty, the Helms care deeply about their racing future.

Jerry, writing about the WQMA:

We’ve poured our hearts, time, and resources into creating a space where kids can learn, grow, and race.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been invested by our non-profit organization to build and maintain the track and its facilities.

This place has been a pillar in the lives of so many of our young drivers — a place where they’ve made friends who are like family and shared memories that will last a lifetime.

Now, our future is uncertain.

The county is putting our beloved track up to the highest bidder, asking for a minimum 2.5 times what we pay now.

For our non-profit kid’s organization, that’s a huge challenge, and it threatens to take away the only location our kids have for the sport they love.

Some kids choose baseball or football, and they’re provided with fields. Our kids choose both, and they deserve a track.

Our drivers aren’t just kids playing a sport — they’re the future drivers for Evergreen Speedway next door, a big part of our community.

Our races bring in visitors from across the Pacific Northwest and Canada, supporting local businesses and enriching our community.

Please, Snohomish County Council help us continue to be here for the next generation of racers.

We’re asking for your support to let our kids race, to keep their dreams alive, and to allow this track to stay their home.

The Wolves are on the prowl, conquering one soccer pitch after another.

Four young Coupeville booters were shining brightly in Tukwila alongside their teammates with Deception FC.

Sparked by Lucy Youderian, Elaina Grose, Scotlyn Helm, and Lilly Hestbeck, the GU11 squad wrapped up play Monday at the Surf Invitational in Tukwila with a second-place finish in its class.

Coming off stellar play at the Rush Cup earlier this month, Deception FC received a special invitation from the Surf Invitational director.

“I wear #1, because I am #1, skippy!”

Two Whidbey teams made the trek off-Island, with both of them reaching the final.

Of course, the one featuring Coupeville athletes, led by coaches Will Tellez and Matthew Hutchinson, is the one which gets the biggest buzz in a blog called … Coupeville Sports.

For the other Deception FC players, it’s time to convince your parents to move to Cow Town, is all I’m sayin’…

Anyways, the trip to Tukwila was a boon for all involved, said proud Wolf Mom (and CHS girls’ soccer head coach) Kimberly Kisch.

“We were so excited to have the opportunity to compete at this skill level,” she said. “No matter the outcome, the experience was invaluable.”

Along with the games on the field, the girls also got to watch the pros at work, viewing a scrimmage between the Seattle Reign and Portland Thorns.

All your medals belong to us.

Also coming out on top were Northwest United teams paced by Coupeville booters.

“We win, son, we win.” (Lindsey Helm photos)

You will not pass!

Well, you might pass the ball once or twice, but you certainly won’t score on the Red Rebels.

Throwing down four straight shutouts, the U10 girls’ soccer squad, coached by Coupeville High School pitch guru Kimberly Kisch, rampaged to a tourney title this weekend.

The event was the 3rd annual Matt Mikos Memorial Tournament, hosted by the North Whidbey Soccer Club.

With tons of teams and multiple titles in play, action was hopping, but the spotlight, at least for the moment, falls on the pride of the prairie.

Coupeville’s young booters, sponsored by Callen’s Restaurant, are coming for all your trophies.

All of them, I said.

Pride of the prairie.

Scotlyn Helm, queen of well-earned taekwondo bling. (Photos courtesy Lindsey Helm)

She’s the terror of taekwondo town.

Coupeville Elementary School multi-sport star Scotlyn Helm continues to set the sports world ablaze.

When she’s not punching the pedal through the metal on the racetrack, Finley’s talented lil’ sis is busy flinging kicks and punches on the mat.

Competing with mom Lindsey at her first Class A taekwondo tournament in Eugene this weekend, Scotlyn brought home an assortment of medals.

She scored in forms, weapons, combat, and sparring.

Scotlyn gets congratulations from her trainer, who told her to “sweep the leg!”

While Scotlyn was kickin’ fanny and takin’ names, mom Lindsey was also busy.

The popular Coupeville teacher, staying on top of her game in case she has to put down any ruckuses in class, earned her own medals in combat, creative weapons, and X-Treme weapons.

Lindsey and Finley share a moment before mom goes out and lays down a whuppin’.
