The Wolves have arrived.

In the biggest triumph of Coupeville High School’s short run in the 1A Olympic League, the boys’ tennis squad upended heavily-favored Klahowya in the league tourney Monday in Kitsap, qualifying four players for Districts.

Singles players Aaron Curtin and Sebastian Davis went one-two (with Davis shocking the #1 seed in the semifinals) and will be joined by the duo of Connor McCormick and Loren Nelson, who rebounded from an opening loss to claim fourth place in doubles.

Districts will be held Saturday, Nov. 1 at a time and site yet to be determined.

After his team’s impressive run Monday, longtime Wolf coach Ken Stange was sky-high.

“It was a great tourney!,” he said. “We exceeded expectations in singles, and we met expectations in doubles.”

The tourney, which brought together Klahowya, which had gone 4-0 in league play, Coupeville and the combined forces of Chimacum and Port Townsend, was played with a slightly different format than normal.

Instead of playing best two sets out of three, matches were pro sets to eight, win by two.

Curtin went 3-0 on the day, nipping Davis (2-1) in an all-Coupeville finale that came down to a tiebreaker.

Davis, riding high after bouncing Klahowya’s #1 player in the semis, had a 4-1 advantage on Curtin in the tiebreaker, before the senior rebounded to rip off six straight points to notch the win.

While Stange was pleased to see Curtin, who went to state as a doubles player last year, seize the moment, he was equally impressed with the continued rise of his #2 player.

Sebastian had a coming out party of sorts,” Stange said. “Early in the season, he was playing well, but having a hard time closing the door on his opponents.

“As we hit the final third of the season, he really came alive,” he added. “He’d already had consistency and a bit of power, but he added some tenacity to the mix — a bit of the killer instinct.”

Taking down the tourney’s top seed, who beat Curtin during regular season play, was an unexpected bonus.

Sebastian made two very big statements today,” Stange said. “He established himself as a co-#1 singles player.

“He also let it be known that the singles court is all his next season. He is the early pick as top player in the league,” he added. “With more off-season practice, he’ll be challenging the private schoolers at districts, looking to advance to May play.”

Not that the Wolf junior can’t make that jump right now.

“Both Sebastian and Aaron stand a good shot to advance to state, if they bring their respective A games this weekend,” Stange said.

Coupeville’s third singles player, senior Kyle Bodamer, went 1-2, just missing a spot in the semifinals opposite Curtin.

McCormick and Loren Nelson fell in their opening match, then stormed back to win two in a row and advance.

Freshmen Joey Lippo and William Nelson knocked off Chimacum’s #1 team before losing to the eventual champs.

They were eliminated along with Bodamer and the team of Joseph Wedekind and John McClarin, who lost both of their matches.

It’s unthinkable.

Enjoying an almost flawless final day of the regular season Thursday, the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis squad capped a nine-match run with no actual rain-outs.

Take away one match at Klahowya called at the two-thirds point and this might be the first fall season in which weather, and the notorious Port Townsend ferry run, both declined to make a dent in the schedule.

After a decade in the game, Wolf coach Ken Stange will take it.

“We could not have asked the weather gods for a more pleasant mid-October day in Port Townsend, nor could we have asked the tennis gods for a better day on the court,” Stange crowed. “We absolutely pasted the Chimacum squad today, ending our regular season on an extremely high note!”

Coupeville won for the fourth time in six matches, sweeping their hosts 7-0 to finish the season at 4-5 overall, 4-2 in Olympic League play.

Making an auspicious debut in the new league, the 1A Wolves swept three from the Cowboys, lost twice to Klahowya and also claimed a victory over 2A league mate North Mason this season.

“I’m quite happy that our players continued to improve, posting better scores as they played the same players for the second and third times,” Stange said.

CHS had little trouble with Chimacum, taking 11 of the 14 varsity sets at 6-0 or 6-1.

“It was very fun and very businesslike,” Stange said. “Now we can set our sights on the league tournament.”

Coupeville will take three singles players (Aaron Curtin, Sebastian Davis and Kyle Bodamer) and three doubles team to that tourney.

While his top trio is set in stone, Stange will let all of his doubles duos duel it out for postseason berths.

“We’ve had a fair amount of movement on the doubles ladder this year, so we will be shaking out our doubles lineup tomorrow,” he said.

The weather finally caught up to them.

After playing an almost unprecedented seven straight matches to start the fall season without suffering a single rain-out, the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis squad finally ran into liquid hell Monday.

The Wolves were actually at the halfway point of their match in Klahowya before court conditions reached the point of no return.

Trailing 3-1, with three varsity matches still in play, they had to accept reality and head back to the bus.

No word on whether it’s an official loss (CHS entered the day 3-4 on the season).

Coupeville wraps regular season play with back-to-back road matches (weather permitting), traveling to Sequim Wednesday, before popping over to play Chimacum Thursday.

The Wolves will participate in the Olympic League tourney Oct. 22-23.

Complete and utter domination.

Winning all seven matches, two by default, and even beating the onset of bad weather to keep their no-rainout streak alive for the season, the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis squad enjoyed a romp Friday afternoon.

By the time the Wolves were done bouncing visiting Chimacum all over the court, they had a 7-0 win, their third straight team match win.

Now 3-4 on the season, CHS will finish 2014 on the road, with matches at Klahowya, Sequim and Chimacum, before participating in its first 1A Olympic League postseason tourney.

With Chimacum only able to shepherd eight players on to the ferry and across to Whidbey, the Cowboys had to forfeit two of the four doubles contests.

The #3 and #4 Coupeville doubles duos played one-set matches against Chimacum players pulling double duty in matches that didn’t count into the team score.

Not that it mattered, since it was all Wolves, all day, regardless of the match.

The top two doubles spots both featured strong moments for Coupeville.

Loren Nelson, returning after illness cost him several matches, teamed with Connor McCormick for a win at first singles, while the #2 Wolf duo of Joseph Wedekind and John McClarin snagged their first win of the season.

The freshmen came through with the clincher.

With Tuesday’s home match against non-conference foe North Mason knotted at 3-3, William Nelson and Joey Lippo were the last Wolves standing.

Even though no one told them how important their #3 doubles match was until later, the duo were on-point, drilling their foes in straight sets and lifting the Wolves to their first team win of the still-young season.

William and Joey, my fab frosh duo, have gelled and are playing more like a single player, as opposed to a doubles team,” CHS coach Ken Stange said. “This should bode well as we finish the season, and as they move toward their sophomore campaign.

“If I can keep them together as a pair, they could do some serious damage in the coming years.”

The 4-3 victory improved Coupeville to 1-4 heading into a road match against a combined Chimacum/Port Townsend squad Thursday.

Using balance across the boards, the Wolves won two singles matches (Sebastian Davis, Kyle Bodamer) and two doubles matches, while surviving missing half of their top doubles duo.

Loren Nelson was out sick, but Jimmy Myers vaulted up from the JV and combined with Connor McCormick for a win.

While Stange was impressed with all of his winners (“Sebastian played extremely consistent tennis and Kyle was on and off the court before I could even watch more than a few points”), he gave the biggest props to a duo that barely came out on the short end of the stick.

Joseph Wedekind and John McClarin split sets at #1 doubles before falling in a dramatic 10-8 tiebreaker. The Wolves had the lead at 8-7, but couldn’t find a final shot to put the match away.

“Even though they lost, John and Joseph provided the day’s most dramatic match,” Stange said.

“After last season, I watched those two young men play tennis almost every day, rain or shine. They even tried taking up court space during the girls’ season,” he added. “They then played all summer long. I really admire their effort and work ethic.”
