38 years of building up the youth of Central Whidbey, on the field and off.

Coupeville’s new Town Planner has only been on the job since May, but already is making waves.

One of Tammy Baraconi’s first acts has been to inform the Central Whidbey Soccer Club that, after 10+ years, it is no longer allowed to hang a banner on the Department of Transportation-owned fence next to the overpass that crosses Highway 20 in Coupeville.

There is a disagreement over how the banner — which is hung in the summer and again in late winter to get kids signed up for fall and spring soccer seasons run by the non-profit club — is classified under the town’s sign code.

For the previous decade, the club was told by town officials that the banner was considered an Event-Orientated Sign — Coupeville Town Code 16.28.020 (B) (11) — which allows signs to hang for a period of not more than six weeks before the event and be removed not later than one week following the event.

Baraconi now says the banner falls under Off-Premise Advertising — CTC 16.28.020(C)(8) — which is not permitted, since the Soccer Club does not have a field or office at the location the sign is being hung.

At this point, since this is not a “professional newspaper” and I do not have to be neutral, let me be clear — while this change is well-intentioned (I assume), it is asinine.

Has anyone ever complained about the banner being hung there?

I doubt it.

Has there ever been an accident caused by the placing of the banner there?

I doubt it.

Has the soccer club been an invaluable asset to this community? Has it spurred an incredible growth in soccer among Central Whidbey youths? Is it performing a valuable service?

Yes, yes, and yes once again.

Again and again we hear how we need to give the youth more opportunities, more chances to find constructive things in life to do, to get them off their phones, away from their TVs and computers and outside.

The Central Whidbey Soccer Club, and the countless men and women who donate their time and skill-sets to teach this town’s children, to give them an outlet, to make them better people and athletes (but people first) deserve our praise, our support, our help.

Pulling down a banner that has no negative effect and no longer allowing it to be hung in the one place in town every parent will see it, is narrow-minded at best, rank stupidity at worst.

I call upon everyone who has ever had a child in the CWSC, every coach and athlete at CHS and CMS, soccer or otherwise, every fan, every reader to reach out and tell Town of Coupeville officials they are making a mistake.

But one they can still correct.

UPDATE:

As of late morning Friday, town officials have softened their stance a bit, telling the Central Whidbey Soccer Club that its sign is not “wrong or illegal,” but that the issue is its location on city property.

Citing an “informal practice” of allowing non-profits to put up signs for events/activities for a week, the town still wants the sign removed by Monday, July 13 at the latest.

There has been no word on whether the sign can be re-posted in the future.

NWU GU16 players bask in the glow of their awesomeness.

Kalia Littlejohn’s goal-scoring foot will not cool down.

The Coupeville High School freshman hammered home yet another score on Spanish soil, lifting her NWU GU16 select soccer squad to a hard-fought 1-1 tie Wednesday in its third game at the Donosti Cup in San Sebastian.

The tie leaves the squad, which features four Whidbey Island players, at 2-0-1 in the 200-team, 20-country tourney.

There is a chance the draw could become a victory, though, as the other team’s goal was being reviewed.

Littlejohn punched in her goal off of an assist from fellow Whidbey mate Jenna Cooley, and the play was set up by a third girl from The Rock, Malia Hansen.

The fourth Island representative, CHS sophomore Mia Littlejohn, didn’t score but was in the thick of things all game.

Mia played with a determination that would make an opponent scared to come near her,” said excited mom Dawn Hesselgrave. “You should have seen her strength, as she powered through and won balls jumping backwards in the air two times for the header.

“I did not know she was that flexible!”

Just in case you forgot where they are.

San Sebastian glows.

San Sebastian glows.

Still flawless in Spain.

Pulling off its second shutout in as many days, the NWU GU16 select soccer squad, which features four Whidbey island players, rampaged to a 6-0 victory at the Donosti Cup in San Sebastian.

With all four Island girls — Mia Littlejohn, Jenna Cooley, Malia Hansen and Kalia Littlejohn — contributing with a goal or assist, or both, NWU pounded Antigua Luberri BGE, which hails from Zumaia, Spain.

Now 2-0 in the tourney, which draws 400+ teams from 20+ countries, the Washington state squad has outscored its opponents 10-0 so far.

The most electrifying goal in game two may have come from Kalia Littlejohn.

The Coupeville High School freshman-to-be awoke memories of the professional players who have trod the pitch in the stadium she was playing in, punching in her goal on a header.

Back at home on The Rock, Wolf girls’ soccer coach Troy Cowan heard the news and hasn’t stopped smiling since.

They’re undefeated on international soil.

Having traveled to Spain for the Donosti Cup, the NWU GU16 select soccer squad, which features four Whidbey Island players, rolled to a 4-0 win in its opener.

Coupeville High School sophomore-to-be Mia Littlejohn scored a goal in the first half, then took over in net in the second half to complete the shutout.

The Donosti Cup, held in San Sebastian on Spain’s Basque coast, draws 400 teams from 20 countries.

Players, coaches and parents raised the money for the trip with a variety of fundraisers, and the first few days in Spain were spent sightseeing and tasting the local cuisine.

San Sebastian currently has two of the world’s top ten ranked restaurants.

Mia Littlejohn is joined on the squad by lil’ sis Kalia, who will be a freshman at CHS, as well as fellow Islanders Malia Hansen and Jenna Cooley.

Jose Marcos

Jose Marcos

Jose Marcos is a young man on the rise.

A strong two-sport (soccer, football) athlete, he’s one of those kids who plays his heart out on the field, then reverts to being an easy-going, friendly guy once the game is done.

Watching him interact with his soccer mates in the stands before and after games, you can see his sunny personality shine through. He’s just a good dude.

As Jose celebrates a birthday today, we want to wish him all the best.

May cake rain down on you all day long.

And, for those who want to know a bit more about him, pop over and take a look at this story I wrote back in early 2014:

Now you know. And knowing is half the battle.
