The season is winding down, but the photo opportunities still abound.

Traveling clicker John Fisken wandered through Coupeville Saturday (perhaps drawn by the sunshine) and he and his lens captured the CHS boys’ soccer squad hard at work.

The Wolves lost a hard-fought non-conference game to private school power Charles Wright Academy, but local fans can forget that and focus on the pics.

A little sisterly love to cap the awards ceremony.

All the ferry rides and long trips and getting up to leave the Island at 3:30 AM paid off.

Coupeville’s Mia and Kalia Littlejohn are coming back home as champions.

The duo and their teammates on the NWU U15 Premier girls soccer squad captured a State Cup title Sunday, bouncing FC Spokane 3-0 to claim the Silver division.

The Littlejohns and Oak Harbor’s Malia Hansen comprise the Whidbey contingent on the select squad.

NWU romped through the State Cup, outscoring four foes by a score of 14-1.

It opened with a 6-0 win, then ran up scores of 3-0, 2-1 and 3-0 en route to the title.

The celebration was a brief one however, as the Littlejohn sisters took off after the soccer game to go play select basketball.

Mia, a freshman at Coupeville High School, and Kalia, an 8th grader, are guest players with Washington Elite Blue Ice, who are playing in a weekend hoops tourney.

Two wins from a title.

Despite missing three key players Saturday, the GU19 Whidbey Islanders select soccer squad played what coach Sean LeVine termed “the perfect game,” shredding host Lake Hills Athena 3-0 to nab a spot in the State Cup semifinals.

The Islanders head to Tukwila Saturday, May 9 for that match.

Win and they stay around to play in the championship game the next day.

To get there, Whidbey overcame the loss of Bailee Olson (out on a questionable red card suspension), Jacalyn Hefflefinger (competing in the Miss Oak Harbor pageant) and Ayla Muller (moved out of the country … seriously).

Down to 10 players, the Islanders got a little break when their foes elected to be good sports and not take the man advantage.

Still, Lake Hills did have four subs, while Whidbey’s warriors went every second.

And still kicked some fanny.

“We dominated them from whistle to whistle in every aspect,” a jubilant LeVine said.

While they might have had no backups, the Islanders who were in attendance came out on fire, especially Player of the Match Vivien Valles, who had a hand (or foot) in all three goals.

“Her runs created openings for other players or she assisted the assist or directly assisted all three,” LeVine said.

On the first score, the Islanders kept the ball moving and the Lake Hills goalie guessing until the last, fateful second.

Kendra Warwick (“who also played dominant and lights out”) found Valles, who was ripping off a “brilliant diagonal run,” with the ball then shooting off to Gillian Crossley, who opened fire on the net.

When Crossley’s shot was partially blocked by the keeper, Lydia Peplinski nabbed it and calmly hammered it into the back of the net for the only score her squad would need.

Not content to sit on a 1-0 lead, however, the Islanders poured it on.

Valles knocked a ball into the box, with Crossley scooping up a deflection and chipping it over the flailing keeper’s head for score #2.

Coming out of the half with the intention of getting another goal and holding on to the shutout, Whidbey did both.

Valles capped the scoring action early in the second half, firing a “perfect” cross into the box where Micky “Two Fists” LeVine dropped a one-touch shot over the keeper and into the far post.

Not bad for a player who had been “on her death bed the last two days with illness,” according to her father/coach.

As the Islanders celebrated and advanced, knowing they’ll get back two of their missing three players next week, Sean LeVine basked in the afterglow.

“Our game today was the most dominant performance of our season!,” he said.

Yes, we have become Fashion Weekly. Got a problem with that? Zane Bundy, injured but natty Saturday.

The sun was out Saturday, the fashion was poppin’ and, for a half, it looked like a major upset was brewin’.

But, it wasn’t to be, as, eventually, visiting Charles Wright Academy found their legs and roared back to knock off the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad 3-1.

The non-conference loss dropped the Wolves to 3-8.

Coupeville, 2-2 in Olympic League play, closes the regular season with conference games at home against Klahowya Monday and on the road at Port Townsend Wednesday.

The Wolves have already clinched a playoff berth, but are still fighting with Port Townsend for the league’s #2 seed.

The top two Olympic League teams host their playoff openers, while the #3 seed hits the road.

Coupeville came out on fire Saturday.

Even missing a number of key players — injuries have been a constant, nagging issue for the Wolves — CHS took the early lead.

Abraham Leyva banged home his 13th goal of the season, off of an assist by Uriel Liquidano, to stake Coupeville to a 1-0 halftime advantage.

Tired legs, though, eventually caught up with the Wolves.

“With so many guys out and not as many subs the guys got a little tired the second half,” said Wolf coach Kyle Nelson.

Game over, man, game over.

Coupeville High School junior Zane Bundy may be out for the rest of the soccer season after an injury caused by a goalie who took a dive in front of him, but he’s still winning every day.

Following in the well-clad footsteps of Wolf boys’ soccer guru Kyle Nelson, the best-dressed coach at the school, Bundy is not content to merely wear shorts and a t-shirt on the sideline.

No, the fashion-forward one chooses to rock a charcoal suit and bow tie combo that makes international soccer/fashion legend David Beckham look like he shops at Wal-Mart.

Well played, Mr. Bundy. Well played.
