Is there anything Sylvia Hurlburt can’t do?

No. The answer is no.

The Coupeville High School junior is an accomplished track runner, ballet star and cheerleader and now she’s putting all the other photographers to shame with her mad skills behind the camera.

It’s Sylvia’s world. We’re just living in it.

It was a beautiful day for the beautiful game.

The sun was shining, the wind was only mild (for the prairie, at least) and the soccer was successful Saturday, as the Coupeville High School booters took Forks out behind the wood shed.

Scampering down the sideline, various cameras in hand, was travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who provides us with the pics that reside above.

Strong down the stretch.

Capping a season-ending five-game unbeaten streak Saturday, the GU19 Whidbey Islanders select soccer squad bounced Crossfire Select 1-0 in a nail-biter.

The victory, coming over their league’s second-place team, gave the Islanders a final mark of 4-2-6 in North Puget Sound League play.

Whidbey kicks off State Cup play with a game at Oak Harbor’s Wildcat Stadium 1 PM today.

Crossfire, which entered the game with just a single loss and the distinction of being the only squad to have taken down the league’s top team, was a formidable foe.

But one the Islanders were ready to knock off.

“Another stellar finish to a tough season,” said Whidbey coach Sean LeVine. “We knew we were in for a fight, but I also knew that we can compete with any team in the league.”

The Islanders dominated the first half, punching in the game’s only goal when Gillian Crossley took advantage of sloppy clearance by the Crossfire goalie to set up the score.

Snagging the ball, she laid in a flawless pass to a waiting Lydia Peplinski, who smacked the ball to the far post, well out of reach of the scrambling goaltender.

Coming out of the break, the Islanders, who, as usual this season, were playing with no subs, had to face down a much deeper opponent intent on attacking repeatedly.

“Second half we had to weather storm after storm,” LeVine said. “Our tired team hung in there though and played smart, maintaining their shape and toughness.”

Islander goalie Kenzie Perry, bolstered by a tough band of defenders, stood tall and claimed her third straight shootout.

The game was capped by an unusual moment in which the ref tripped, fell backwards and knocked himself out cold.

“A first for me. Scary moment,” said LeVine, who doubles as a paramedic in real life.

Crossley was tabbed as the Player of the Game for her “hustle, tenacity and getting in on the assist” while birthday girl Micky LeVine “had a great game too, putting some dangerous crosses in and defending well.”

Maybe the Everett Herald was right when they once spelled Joel Walstad’s last name Walstud.

The Coupeville High School senior threw down a scoreless first half as a goalie Saturday, then moved up front and scored a goal of his own as the Wolf boys’ soccer squad thrashed visiting Forks 4-0.

The non-conference win improved CHS to 1-4 on the season.

A day after signing a college football scholarship, Walstad returned to the pitch and controlled the game on both ends.

The few times Forks made a significant run at the net, he shut them down.

Then, after being relieved by Connor McCormick in goal, he punched in a loose ball after a scramble in front of the net.

The original shot, mishandled by the Spartan goalie, came off of the foot of Abraham Leyva, who was trying for a hat trick.

The Wolf junior opened the game with a run down the right side for a goal, then tacked on a second score early in the second half when he curled a shot from the left side.

That gives him a team-high four goals on the season.

Coupeville’s other score came from Garrett Compton, who, much like Walstad, caught a rebound on his toe and banked the ball back in past a frustrated, vocal Forks goaltender.

The Wolves controlled play from start to finish, with a defense led by Aaron Wright and Oscar Liquidano being largely impenetrable.

Along with the four scores, Coupeville had numerous other shots on goals, as Leyva, Compton and Ryan Freeman attacked at will.

The only bad moment for CHS came early, when high-scoring weapon Zane Bundy tumbled over the prone goalie while trying to convert on a breakaway.

He exited the game and limped on and off the field with two teammates helping him at all times.

Forward progress.

It didn’t get the win it wanted, falling 3-2 in overtime to visiting Cascade Christian Wednesday, but the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad did break through.

Junior Abraham Leyva punched in a pair of first-half goals to snap a scoreless streak that had plagued the Wolves through the first three games of the season.

Unfortunately, CHS couldn’t make a 2-1 halftime lead hold up and fell to 0-4 in non-conference play.

The deciding goal came with about a minute left to play in the overtime period.

While the loss stung, the progress in all aspects of the game cheered CHS coach Kyle Nelson.

“The boys continue to improve,” he said. “Our defensive effort and passing game was much better.

“We will continue to work hard in practice and look to get our first victory Saturday.”

The Wolves return to action with a home game against Forks that day.

In a reversal of the normal order, varsity plays first at 1 PM, followed by the JV at 3.
