Goals? Sage Downes will score goals all day!!

“Onward to victory!!”

“You dare to think you can beat us? Fool!!!”

Sage Downes plays a simple game.

Kick the soccer ball into the back of the net. Win the game. Go about the rest of his day.

The Coupeville Elementary School student was back at it Saturday, popping for four goals over two games, as Central Whidbey’s Ciao boys’ soccer squads split a pair with booters from South Whidbey.

After falling 8-6 in the opener, Ciao rebounded for a 6-5 win in the second game.

Six different players tallied goals for Ciao, with Downes being backed by Matthew Kelley (3), Alex Jimenez (2) Aram Leyva (1) Jean Lund-Olsen (1) and James Wood (1).

Tough nuts, Friday Harbor!!

Playoffs? Yes, we are talking playoffs.

Thanks to a wrinkle in the agreement between District 1 athletic director’s, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer team is postseason bound after all.

The Wolves (5-8-2) wrap their regular season with Senior Night Monday against King’s, and that was supposed to be it.

With three 1A schools playing in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference, the top two teams were guaranteed playoff spots, and Coupeville was edged out for those berths by South Whidbey and King’s.

BUT … Friday Harbor WOULD have been the #6 seed out of the Northwest Conference, only the Wolves went 1-0-1 against them in non-conference play.

And, the way the rules are written, CHS then gets to steal away Friday Harbor’s playoff berth.

So, the Wolves live on and will travel to Mount Baker Wednesday, May 7 (4 PM kickoff) to face off with the NWC’s #1 squad.

“It’s a great opportunity for us,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “From everything I can find out about Mount Baker, we should match up well with them.”

It’s a loser-out game and if Coupeville wins, they advance on to play May 9 and possibly May 10.

Four of the eight teams from districts will advance on to tri-districts.

A tie? Um, what now?!?!

Well, this is no one’s idea of a really fun Friday night…

Travel all the way to Granite Falls, play a winless team, and the best you come away with is a tie.

Not the result anyone was probably hoping for, or likely expecting.

But like it or not, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad did just that, eking out a slightly-less-than-thrilling 2-2 tie with the host Tigers.

The stalemate left the Wolves at 5-8-2 overall, 4-8-1 in Cascade Conference play (Granite is 0-13-2) with one game left on the 2014 schedule.

Coupeville welcomes King’s to town Monday for Senior Night (6 PM).

As the #3 team among 1A schools in the 1A/2A league, CHS will be at home when the playoffs begin next week.

If there was a bright spot for Coupeville fans Friday, it came in seeing sophomore sensation Abraham Leyva punch in his tenth goal of the season.

That puts the first-year Wolf among the conference scoring leaders.

Coupeville senior Sean Donley set up Leyva on the score, while also finding the back of the net himself for the fourth time.

Zane Bundy collected an assist on Donley’s score, while Joel Walstad manned the net for the Wolves.

Wolf fans strong, ATM stronger!!

CHS moms, loud and proud.

Coupeville packed the stands Tuesday, but Archbishop Thomas Murphy packed the net.

The Wolf faithful came out loud and proud to support its boys’ soccer squad, but the #1 team in the Cascade Conference took some of the wind out of their sails, raining down goals from all angles on its way to a 7-0 win.

The victory kept ATM on top of the league standings, even as Cedarcrest and South Whidbey nip at its heels.

Coupeville slipped to 5-8-1 overall, 4-8 in league play.

The Wolves, who are out of playoff contention, close with a game at Granite Falls Friday, May 2 and a home clash against King’s Monday, May 5.
