History? Made.

Routing visiting Chimacum 5-0 Tuesday night, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad clinched the first winning season in program history.

The victory caps the regular season, lifting the Wolves to 6-3 in 1A Olympic League play, 8-6-1 overall.

Coupeville opens the playoffs Saturday, hosting a loser-out game at Oak Harbor’s stadium.

Kickoff is 1:30 and the opponent will be the #3 seed from the Nisqually League, which looks to be Vashon Island.

The Pirates have knocked the Wolves out of the postseason two years running.

Tuesday night the focus was on closing out the regular season strongly, and honoring the team’s veterans on Senior Night.

May Rose, Lauren Grove, Mattea Miller, Bree Dagineault, Megan DePorter and foreign exchange student Fanny Deprelle were all hailed for their time as Wolves.

Then the young guns went out and took care of all the scoring.

Junior Mia Littlejohn pounded two more goals, running her school single-season record to 27, while sophomore defender Lindsey Roberts matched her with two scores of her own.

It was goals #5 and #6 for the girl with the bionic leg, while sophomore Kalia Littlejohn hit the back of the net for the eighth time this season.

Mia got two fantastic goals tonight and was totally unselfish trying to get her teammates involved,” said CHS coach Troy Cowan. “She was serving up beautiful balls all night.

“Little sis got into the action as well, getting herself a fabulous goal that was the one that got the scoring started for us,” he added. “I’m really proud of Kalia. She has struggled offensively, but she keeps banging away at it and has NO quit in her.”

While the Littlejohns pepper the net, Roberts, or “Big Lou” as her coach calls her, continues to impress as a two-way warrior.

“I’m taking about the defensive juggernaut that can run like an antelope and score from anywhere on the pitch,” Cowan said.

Roberts cranked in a free kick from 35 yards out, into the wind, drilling the ball and going top shelf for the score, then came back to lead a charge up-field on which she evaded five Cowboys before lashing a frozen rope for her second goal.

“Just another day in the office for Big Lou!,” said a giddy Cowan.

With the game in hand, the Wolves tried to set up Deprelle, a first-time player, for a goal of her own.

“We really wanted her to experience scoring so we did our best to get her one, but it wasn’t meant to be,” Cowan said. “She really was blasting them though.

“She is a great kid and really made some serious strides of improvement, especially in the power department.”

As he basked in the win, and the knowledge that Coupeville had topped Oak Harbor and South Whidbey, handily, for the best girls soccer record for the third straight year, Cowan paid tribute to his veterans.

Rose and Daigneault played a full four years for the Wolves, earning some special praise from their coach.

May and Bree have been with me from the beginning and I am so proud of them,” Cowan said. “All my seniors played awesome tonight and have given their best all season.

“They have represented CHS and themselves with great honor and distinction.”

Sage Renninger leads Coupeville in assists, and, if we believe MaxPreps, is (John Fisken photo)

Sage Renninger leads Coupeville in assists, and, if we believe MaxPreps, is #7 among all 1A players. (John Fisken photo)

This much we know for sure — Mia Littlejohn is having a heck of a season.

According to stats on MaxPreps, she’s the second-best goal scorer in the entire state this season, trailing Ashlyn Willis of Tonasket by the slimmest of margins at 26-25.

That puts Littlejohn #1 among all 1A players for goals, while she’s also #2 in points (#3 across all divisions, which run from 1B-4A).

Now, one caveat.

MaxPreps is still very much a work in progress (no matter what they want you to believe), and among the schools who have NOT reported stats this season is three-time 1A Olympic League champ Klahowya.

So, basically, great season, Mia. Still not 100% sure where you stand, though we know it’s near the top.

At least Littlejohn is not getting shafted like Wolf goalie Lauren Grove, who has 109 saves and yet somehow is missing from the state leader list, which starts at … 67.

And who knows if that’s right, as that goalie, Cate Caporicci of St. George’s, supposedly made those 67 saves while only playing 105 minutes.

There are 80 minutes in a high school soccer game, so, at 67 saves in less than a game-and-a-half, she is either All-World or her defense is the worst to ever take the pitch, or both.

So, as you gaze at the numbers below, be grateful CHS coach Troy Cowan is staying on top of his stat sheet, while shaking your head gently at everyone else.

Goals:

Mia Littlejohn 25 (#1 in 1A, #2 in all divisions)
Kalia Littlejohn 7 (#15 in 1A)

Assists:

Sage Renninger 9 (#7 in 1A)

They’re a part of history, whether they wanted to be or not.

Despite putting up a strong fight, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad fell 4-0 at Klahowya Saturday afternoon, allowing the Eagles to clinch their third-straight 1A Olympic League title.

It was the 19th straight league win without a loss for the Klahowya booters, breaking a tie with the Coupeville girls’ basketball squad for the most successful program in the relatively short history of the league.

The Eagles went 6-0 in conference games in both 2014 and 2015 and are 7-0 this season, with games remaining against Port Townsend (2-5) and Chimacum (0-6).

The CHS hoops teams were 9-0 in both ’14 and ’15 and are a month away from tipping off season #3.

The loss drops the Wolf booters to 5-3 in league, 7-6-1 overall, with one regular-season game remaining.

Coupeville, which is having the best season in program history, welcomes Chimacum to Whidbey Tuesday on Senior Night (4:30), then opens the playoffs with a loser-out game Oct. 29.

The Wolves host the #3 seed from the Nisqually League (currently Vashon Island) in a game played at Oak Harbor Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30.

The Pirates (7-3-3) have knocked Coupeville out of the playoffs the past two seasons.

Facing off with a Klahowya squad which won a state title just two seasons ago, the Wolves kept things scoreless through much of the first half.

The Eagles broke through when a player “bent in an unbelievable, unassisted corner kick.”

“It was a tremendous shot,” said Coupeville coach Troy Cowan. “Hit the top far corner with a ton of pace, great shot!”

Klahowya tacked on a goal right before the half, then stretched the lead out in the second half.

“The Eagles are a great team and undefeated for a reason,” Cowan said. “We came away with some much needed playing time on turf, which will surely help prepare us for districts and allowed some girls to gain some much needed confidence.

“We will take the lessons learned today and apply them in our regular season finale.”

The past three seasons have been the best in Coupeville High School girls soccer history.

And Thursday the Wolves scaled a new height, winning a program-record seventh game in a single season.

Bouncing host Port Townsend 6-2, Coupeville clinched second-place in the 1A Olympic League, locked down a home playoff game and stayed mathematically alive in the race for the league crown.

Now 5-2 in league play, 7-5-1 overall, the Wolves topped the 2014 and 2015 squads, which each won six games.

Three games up on third-place Port Townsend (2-5) with two to go, CHS is a game-and-a-half behind Klahowya (6-0), the two-time defending league champs.

The Wolves travel to Silverdale Saturday to face the Eagles, then close the regular season at home Oct. 25 against Chimacum (0-6).

While their chances of stopping Klahowya from winning a third straight league title are admittedly slim — Coupeville needs the Eagles, who are 18-0 all-time in league games, to lose their final three contests — the Wolves are still sitting pretty.

Barring a miracle, CHS will be the #2 seed from the Olympic League and will host the #3 team from the Nisqually League (currently Seattle Christian) in a loser-out game Saturday, Oct. 29.

Since all postseason games have to be held on turf, the Wolves will play at their home away from home — Oak Harbor’s stadium.

Win that game and Coupeville advances to the double-elimination round of districts Nov. 1-3, where three of four teams advance to state.

Thursday night the Wolves broke open a close game in the second half, raining down five goals after halftime.

Mia Littlejohn punched home her school single-season record 22nd goal in the first half to stake Coupeville to a 1-0 advantage, then added a second-half hat trick to run her total to 25 on the year.

That gives the CHS junior 33 goals for her career, just 12 off of Abraham Leyva’s school career record of 45.

While Littlejohn was busy hammering the RedHawk defense, two of her freshmen teammates popped in to lend their support.

Tia Wurzrainer tallied her third goal of the season, while Anna Dion hit the back of the net for the first time.

“Our little Anna got hers tonight!!,” said Coupeville coach Troy Cowan. “She has been working her butt off in practice and is a real joy to coach.

“She is like a sponge, just soaking in everything she can,” he added. “Well, tonight it paid off; she followed a deflected shot from one of her teammates and drilled the ball past the goalie.

“Not sure when I have seen the Lady Wolves so happy for a teammate.”

Cowan also praised two of his role players, Megan Thorn and Ema Smith, for their contributions, both on the night and the season.

“Wanted to say how proud I was of Megan and Ema for their hard work and efforts,” he said. “Their names won’t show up on any stat sheets but the valuable minutes they gave the starters in relief were invaluable and will continue to prove to be a precious commodity in our run at districts.”

Small victories.

Until they can take the next step and actually dethrone state soccer power Klahowya, the Coupeville High School booters will have to continue to look for areas of improvement.

One, without a doubt, was finally breaking through the Eagle defense, as they did Tuesday night.

After being shutout the first five times they faced Klahowya, over a three-year period, the Wolves finally got on the board in a 5-2 loss, making a small, but important, chink in the Eagles armor.

Sophomore defender Lindsey Roberts notched both goals, taking direct kicks after the rampaging Kalia Littlejohn was fouled by Klahowya’s defense.

That doubled Roberts scoring output on the season, with her four goals sitting third on the stat sheet behind Mia Littlejohn (21) and Kalia Littlejohn (7).

The loss drops Coupeville to 4-2 in 1A Olympic League play, 6-5-1 overall, and puts them two games behind Klahowya (6-0, 8-1-2) with three to play.

The Wolves, who have finished second both years the four-team league has been in existence, can make it three straight years with a win at Port Townsend (2-4, 3-8-1) Thursday.

That would leave them mathematically alive for the league crown, while a #2 seed gets them a home playoff game (on the turf field in Oak Harbor) Oct. 29.
