Dream big. Succeed big.

Soroptimist International of Coupeville will be offering three free seminars — Dream it, Be It: Career Support for Girls –– in March, with an eye on helping local young women prepare for their futures.

The sessions will be held at a yet to be determined spot, and registration is now open.

Classroom space is limited and it’s on a first-come, first-served basis, so girls and their parents are encouraged to pick up, fill out and return the necessary forms as soon as possible.

Registration applications can be found in the counseling center at Coupeville High School and can be returned there or to Shelli Trumbull at Cascade Insurance (404 S. Main).

The sessions will be:

Saturday, Mar. 5 – 10:00-2:30
Saturday, Mar. 12 – 10:00-2:30
Saturday, Mar. 19 – 9:00-3:30

Each session, which is designed for high school-aged girls, will include female business owners from the Central Whidbey community.

The program aims to empower young women to pursue career goals, with an emphasis on career opportunities, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles and moving forward after setbacks.

Let’s talk about dresses (seriously)!!

I’m all about that dress.

Well, at least for a moment. Then we’re back to sports.

But, since a fair amount of Coupeville High School’s best athletes have been known to wear a dress or two, it all fits together.

So, doing my public service, I’m here to give you a head’s up on My Fairy Godmother, a project run by the Coupeville Soroptimists.

It offers high school girls a chance to obtain formal dresses for Prom and other such dances for a small fee.

A very small fee.

Cost is $15 and you get $10 of that back when you return the dress. Donate a dress yourself and the cost drops even further.

There are 200+ dresses to choose from, with a variety of sizes and styles available.

To take advantage of the service (and enjoy the sparkling cider and snacks offered with the dress search), contact Amy Briscoe at (360) 929-7829 to set up an appointment.

And that’s about all I have to say about dresses for the time being, though I am willing to keep talking about these here snacks…

Are you a young woman in grades 8-11

Amy Briscoe wants to talk to your daughters.

She and her fellow Coupeville Soroptimists are part of a global program to help young women who face obstacles to their future success.

The program — “Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls” — provides girls with access to professional role models, career education and the resources necessary to accomplish their goals.

Financial backing will also be offered starting this year.

The local branch would like to set up a Girls Advisory Group with a small group of CHS students.

Plans call for two students from each of the four grades to be included in the initial group.

The Soroptimists are looking for students currently in grades 8-11, so they would all be current high schoolers next school year, when the advisory group will start meeting.

The students selected for the group will help the Soroptimists plan, implement and evaluate their “Dream It, Be It” projects.

The backpack you buy today may be worn by the next great Wolf athlete of tomorrow.

Soroptimist International of Coupeville is launching a month-long campaign to collect school supplies and funds to aid local students whose families can’t afford to purchase things such as notebooks, pens and, yes, backpacks.

The school district currently has approximately 80 students in need of assistance.

The Soroptimists are seeking composition books, spiral notebooks (college ruled), scientific calculators, red pens, green pens, pencil sharpeners and highlighters, among other things.

Donations of supplies and/or money can be delivered through Aug. 18 to Shelli Trumbull at Cascade Insurance Agency (404 S. Main, next door to Prairie Center Grocery).
