The fight for league dominance rages. (Julie Wheat photo)

The schedule is full to the brim.

As we wade into the heart of January, Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams will stay busy, with 31 varsity games on the slate for next week.

Of those, 16 are conference clashes, which will bring things into focus a bit more.

Coupeville hits the road Monday to play non-conference foe Auburn Adventist Academy, before returning home Friday to host NWL rival Darrington.

Action continues Saturday, but just for the Wolf varsity boys, as they welcome non-league foe Napavine to town for a royal rumble.

Ari Cunningham and her teammates have a busy week ahead of them. (Julie Wheat photo)

We’re almost back in business.

After a Christmas-related slowdown on the hoops schedule, area high school basketball teams return to action in a big way next week.

The Coupeville varsity girls are slated to play four times in six days, starting off with a trip Dec. 29-31 to the Trojan Storm Classic in Meridian.

The Wolves open against Blaine, with their next two games decided by how the tourney plays out.

Then, after a two-day break for New Year’s, Scout Smith’s squad is joined by Coupeville’s other three hoops’ teams for a trek off-Island Saturday, Jan. 3 to face non-conference foe Morton-White Pass.

As 2025 prepares to transition into 2026, a look at where things sit through Dec. 28:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
Orcas Island 2-0 5-0
MV Christian 1-0 3-2

Aiden O’Neill flies into action. (Julie Wheat photo)

No games for you. Or you. Or even you.

Maybe.

The Northwest 2B/1B League is basically taking a week off for Christmas, with the only basketball contests currently scheduled for next week being a pair of non-conference rumbles Monday for La Conner.

Well, that was true until just as I went to publish this story, a game was slipped on the schedule for Tuesday, Dec. 23, sending the Coupeville varsity boys to water-logged Concrete for a “non-conference game against a conference foe.”

That makes up a bit for the Wolves losing their two-game trip to Eastern Washington this weekend due to troublesome weather at the passes.

But, other than that, the hoops landscape is bare until the following week, when a fairly busy New Years week slate of games kicks off Monday, Dec. 29.

Included in that is a trip to Meridian for the Coupeville varsity girls, who are scheduled to play three games in three days Dec. 29-31 at the Trojan Storm Classic.

Though, even as you read this, anything and everything could be changing – tis the season to use a pencil and not a pen to write down scheduling info.

With that in mind, a look at where things presently sit:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
Orcas Island 2-0 5-0
MV Christian 1-0 3-2
Concrete 0-0 0-4
Darrington 0-0 3-2
Friday Harbor 0-0 0-6
La Conner 0-1 0-5
Coupeville 0-2 1-5

Northwest League girls’ basketball:

School League Overall
La Conner 1-0 4-2
MV Christian 1-0 4-1
Orcas Island 1-1 4-3
Concrete 0-0 3-1
Darrington 0-0 0-3
Friday Harbor 0-0 1-5
Coupeville 0-2 1-4

Sage Arends prepares to fire off a free throw. (Julie Wheat photo)

The season continues to unfold, when Mother Nature plays fair.

Multiple high school basketball games, though none involving Coupeville, were postponed this week as Western Washington deals with massive flooding.

Being on Whidbey Island and hopping over to play on another rock Friday — Orcas Island — the Wolves were featured in the only Northwest 2B/1B League games to be played that night.

With the week ahead, Coupeville hosts NWL rival Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, with the CHS boys then scheduled to head East for two non-conference games.

Brad Sherman’s varsity boys are slated to play at Manson Friday and Entiat Saturday, though the condition of the passes will likely tell the tale of whether those contests are played.

For the moment, here’s where things sit through Dec. 14:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
Orcas Island 1-0 3-0
Concrete 0-0 0-2
Darrington 0-0 1-2
Friday Harbor 0-0 0-4
La Conner 0-0 0-3
MV Christian 0-0 2-1
Coupeville 0-1 1-4

Northwest League girls’ basketball:

School League Overall
Orcas Island 1-0 2-2
Concrete 0-0 2-0
Darrington 0-0 0-1
Friday Harbor 0-0 1-4
La Conner 0-0 3-1
MV Christian 0-0 3-1
Coupeville 0-1 1-3
