Rose (John Fisken photo)

The future (and present) of Wolf volleyball — freshmen Maddy Hilkey (left) and Emma Smith (back) and sophomore Lauren Rose. (John Fisken photo)

The sophomores were sensations.

For whatever it’s worth, three 10th graders lead the way in the final CHS volleyball stats.

Lauren Rose, Katrina McGranahan and Payton Aparicio each pop up in 10 of 11 categories, with Rose at the absolute top in a team-high five categories.

Now, I know, back-line players don’t appear as often in the offensive categories, and the spike happy snipers who patrol the net don’t get a lot of chances to rack up digs, service returns and assists.

I get it.

But still, appearing in all but one of the categories would seem to imply the terrific trio were versatile as all heck.

So, there you go.

But go ahead and look for yourself. If you know more about volleyball than I do (not hard…) you may come to a different conclusion.

And, as always, remember, if you don’t like your numbers, go talk to your coaches.

They’re the ones who posted them on MaxPreps.com. I just came along later and plucked them off and slapped them up here in pursuit of page hits.

That’s my game.

The numbers are always moving.

An interception here, two tackles there, a handful of receptions just around the corner. Stats are an ever-evolving beast.

Coming off a road loss at Klahowya Friday night, there was definite movement on the stat sheet for the Coupeville High School football squad.

Wiley Hesselgrave took over the team lead in touchdowns, Chris Battaglia ascended the throne for sacks and Tavian Woolett came blitzing out of nowhere to record two tackles in his varsity debut.

So, here we go, through week eight, as posted by the CHS coaching staff on MaxPreps.com:

First-year goalie Lauren Grove has the 10th most saves of any netminder in the state.

First-year goalie Lauren Grove has the 10th most saves of any net-minder in the state.

Lauren Grove is #1. Sorta.

When you look at girls’ soccer stats on MaxPreps.com, the Coupeville High School junior currently has the most saves of any goalie playing at the 1A level this season.

But, while her 32 saves are strong work, especially for a first-year player, there are only TWO goalies listed under 1A (the other one, Maddie Nielsen of King’s, has 24 saves).

And, since there are a lot more than two schools playing soccer in this class, it’s a pretty good bet there are more than two goalies out there, some with equally strong stats.

Which is not to disparage what Lauren is doing in net.

When you look at the stats for the whole state, she’s still among the best goalies working, ranking 10th in saves among all schools, 2B to 4A, which are reporting their stats.

Grove’s exploits, and the scoring totals of Kalia and Mia Littlejohn, top our first in-depth look at Wolf booter stats.
