Burdge, Campbell hailed by Lion’s Club

Coupeville High School seniors Alysia Burdge and Matthew Campbell have been tabbed as the Lion’s Club Students of the Quarter.

Burdge, who was a key member of the Wolf cheer squad again this fall, boasts a 3.99 GPA and plans to attend Brigham Young University in pursuit of a psychology degree.

The youngest of Aaron and Trina Burdge’s four children, she balances school with work at the Bayleaf and also competes in track and field.

Alysia is on the yearbook staff, is a member of the school’s Executive Board and the National Honor Society and participates in Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Her community service includes working with Ragnar, junior cheer, and the Coupeville Arts Festival.

Matthew, who was the hard-working football manager this fall, is the son of Nathan and Rachael Campbell.

He is on the Executive Board, is a National Honor Society officer and committee chair, and is a member of the Leos Club.

Campbell, who has a pristine 4.0 GPA, works in landscaping and does pool maintenance for the Admirals Cove Beach Club.

Future plans include attending a four-year university, with an eye on medical school after that.

Lions Club honors splendid trio

The final three are in the books.

Wolf seniors Nick Guay, Isabella Schooley, and Damy Giacobbe will be honored Wednesday night as the Students of the Quarter by the Coupeville Lions Club.

The service organization, which has awarded scholarships to CHS students for 80+ years, traditionally honors eight students during a school year.

This time around, that number has hit 10 as there were ties during the third and fourth quarters.

When the Lions hand out their awards, the selections are based on attitude, leadership, scholarship, community service, sportsmanship, inspiration, contributions to school, and congeniality.

All CHS seniors are eligible, with staff and teachers selecting the winners.

The fourth quarter honorees:

Damy Giacobbe:

A foreign exchange student from Olevano Romano, Italy, he’s staying with Jennifer and Steve Wynn during his time in Coupeville.

Giacobbe has participated in volleyball, track and field, and cross country, worked as a library manager, and worked with the Lion’s Leos Club.

A member of the National Honors Society, he earned third place in a math competition and scored a merit certificate for technology from the Cisco Academy.

His hobbies include cycling, reading, and music, and Giacobbe has been active in community service with the Leo’s Club and the Historic Waterfront Association.

After graduation from high school, he plans to pursue further education in college and medical school.

 

Nick Guay

Nick Guay:

The son of Dina and Dylan Guay, he’s been a top Wolf athlete for four years, playing baseball, soccer, track, and basketball.

A key part of a hoops squad which won a district title and went to state during his senior season, he’s currently slated to head to the state track and field championships May 23-25, having qualified in three events.

Guay is ranked #3 in the high jump among all male competitors from 2B schools.

When he’s not playing sports, the lanky one is a member of the National Honor Society, who enjoys math, history, welding, and workshop.

Community service includes assisting the Ragnar Relays, Race for the Reserve, and Mussel Fest, while Guay also helps makes food baskets at his local church for distribution to those in need.

After graduation, he plans to study business management and architecture at a four-year college.

 

Isabella Schooley

Isabella Schooley:

A Wolf cheerleader and experienced dog show participant, she spends her extra time working on her grandmother’s ranch and aiding with the care of her sisters.

The daughter of Tania Schooley, Isabella plans to attend Western Washington University to study biology.

During her CHS days, she has enjoyed studying science, chemistry, biology, and physics, while balancing academics, sports, and volunteer work.

A member of the Lions Leo Club, the National Honor Society and the Captain’s Club, Schooley has volunteered at the Arts and Crafts Festival and Race the Reserve.

Lions Club honors top trio

Three for three.

When the Coupeville Lions Club honored its CHS Students of the Quarter Wednesday, there were three teenagers on hand instead of the normal two.

A rare tie in the voting process capped the third quarter of the 2023-2024 school year, so the more, the merrier.

The Lions honored Reina Reed, Andrew Williams, and Logan Downes.

CHS seniors are eligible for the award, with staff and teachers voting on the recipients.

Things taken into consideration include attitude, leadership, scholarship, community service, sportsmanship, inspiration, contributions to school, and congeniality.

The Coupeville Lions have a long, proud tradition of honoring local students, having done so for more than 80 years.

Last year, the service group awarded $50,000 in scholarships to Wolf grads.

As each school year progresses, the Lions honor two (or sometimes three) students each quarter, with two of those honorees later being hailed as the Students of the Year.

For quarter three, the winners are:

 

Logan Downes:

The all-time leading scorer in CHS boys’ basketball history was also a First-Team All-League pick as a record-setting quarterback during football season.

A member of the Captain’s Club who enjoys his Advanced Placement Government and Physics Class, Downes put in community service as a ref with Coupeville Youth Basketball and as a frequent volunteer.

He worked at the elementary school, in the concession stand at sports events, and at the Penn Cove Mussel Fest.

The youngest of Ralph and Angie’s three sons, Logan is an avid outdoorsman who plans to attend a four-year college and pursue a career as a Fish and Wildlife Officer.

Reina Reed:

A former baseball player and cheerleader, Reed is a member of the Lions Club Leos and enjoys studying coding and chemistry.

The daughter of Christopher and Jessica, she works as a student assistant in the CHS office and plans to study science at Western Washington University.

As a member of the Wolf cheer squad, Reina has been active in both sideline and competition cheer.

 

Andrew Williams:

A prolific athlete (soccer, basketball, baseball) and member of the jazz band, he rocks a 4.0 GPA and is in the National Honor Society.

Zaneita and Matthew’s son is a Dairy Queen manager and enjoys working out and playing multiple musical instruments.

A volunteer at the elementary school, he also has helped with Race the Reserve, Ragnar, and Mussel Fest.

Andrew, who enjoys studying science and doing woodworking, plans to major in Engineering.

Lions Club honors terrific twosome

They’re the best at what they do — which is quite a lot.

All that hard work paid off, as Coupeville High School seniors Ava Mitten and Zane Oldenstadt were recently tabbed as Students of the Quarter by the Lions Club.

Honorees are selected each quarter by CHS staff and teachers, and at the end of the year two of the eight are named as the Students of the Year.

To be eligible, you need to be a senior and display qualities the Lions Club and school want to promote.

These include attitude, leadership, scholarship, community service, sportsmanship, inspiration, contribution to school, and congeniality.

Ava, whose grandfather Jack and uncle Jason are both in the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame, is a super talented artist who lit up the soccer field this fall.

Fleet-footed in the world of track and field, she’s a member of the Captain’s Club, has served on the Executive Board, is a member of the National Honor Society, and also participates in the Big Sister and United Student Leader programs.

Having racked up a 3.92 GPA, Ava favors environmental science, English, and art, and makes Grandma Carmen McFadyen super-proud.

In between all of her school activities, she also works part time at Windermere Realty, which is owned by parental units Eric and Aleshia Mitten.

But there’s more!

Ava, like older brother Jake before her, is also a busy bee when it comes to community service, volunteering at the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival, Career Day, Halloween events at Fort Casey and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Zane Oldenstadt is a three-sport athlete who bounces from football to basketball to either baseball or track and field, while also finding time to be a man about town.

Recently he posted pics of himself wearing a carved pumpkin on his head and hitting up numerous prairie hot spots, setting Instagram afire.

On the gridiron and hardcourt, Zane is a rock-solid enforcer as a lineman and paint protector, while also showcasing a solid shooting touch with the ball while playing hoops.

The son of Curtis Oldenstadt and Michelle Glass, Zane has a 3.6 GPA and shows a particular keenness for his science and history classes.

A member of the Captain’s Club, he’s put in time helping out at the Lions Club garage sale, the mussel festival, the arts and crafts shindig, and Fort Casey’s haunted house.

Last but not least, Zane has worked at both the Bayleaf and in landscaping.

And did I mention he wore a carved pumpkin on his head for an extended period of time? Cause that feels super important to me.
