Senior netters bid adieu

There was a sparkle to the day.

Yes, the weather was overcast, cold, and threatened to spit rain all Tuesday afternoon.

And yes, the opponent was a lethal tennis factory which has rightfully ruled Whidbey’s courts for years, making the scores a little lopsided in favor of the players not in Coupeville’s colors.

But, while the Wolf netters being swept by visiting South Whidbey is a part of the day, it is only one part.

The bigger story was longtime CHS tennis guru Ken Stange celebrating perhaps the biggest senior class of his nearly two decades at the helm of the program.

Before serves were launched Tuesday, before backhands sliced and overheads smashed, the Wolves celebrated eight young women from the Class of 2022, paying tribute to all they have accomplished in difficult times.

The Wolf seniors completely lost their sophomore season, then had their junior season reduced to playing just one rival school, thanks to a pandemic.

Even now, as seniors, they have only been able to get four matches played, due to a lack of readily available opponents since CHS reclassified from 1A to 2B.

But they have endured, and their pluck and resilience warmed the heart of their coach, who praised his eight-pack for all they brought to the program.

Noelle Daigneault, Eryn Wood, Katelin McCormick, Sophie Martin, Kim Castro, Mary Milnes, Leni Raduenz, and Abby Mulholland returned that praise in their Senior Night comments, as well.

“I really want to thank Coach Stange for teaching me everything I know about tennis,” Daigneault said. “This is a skill set I will be using well into my old age, and I’m glad I have it.”

Her thoughts were echoed by Wood, who told her teammates, “I am going to miss the endless joking around and laughter that came with being a part of this team.”

While Tuesday’s loss drops Coupeville to 3-1 on the season, it still has two regular season matches left to play, before a trip to Tumwater May 20 for the District 1/4 tourney.

The Wolves will join Friday Harbor, La Conner, and Stevenson for that rumble, with the singles and doubles winner advancing to state.

Hardball squads play to rare tie

Well, that was unexpected.

Thursday’s JV baseball game between Coupeville High School and host South Whidbey started with an offensive bang, turned into a pitcher’s duel, then closed with another burst of runs.

Which all resulted in a … tie?

It’s true, as the Wolves and Falcons settled their 6-6 stalemate by calling it a day and not battling any longer into the fading sunshine.

Instead, the teams came away happy with getting to play a full seven frames — especially on a day when they followed the varsity in action — instead of a cut-down four or five inning affair.

With the tie Coupeville sits at 3-4-1 on the season, with a road trip to Mount Vernon this Saturday next up on the schedule.

Thursday’s royal rumble got started with an explosion of runs, as the Wolves slapped three runs on the board in the top of the first, only to have the Falcons respond with four of their own in the bottom half of the frame.

The opening Wolf rally was sparked by base-knocks from Aiden O’Neill, Seth Woollet, Chase Anderson, and Camden Glover.

With three of those four being only 8th graders, Coupeville’s offensive future is a bright one.

After combining for seven runs in the first inning, the teams only scratched out two more across the next five innings, with both of those coming from the Wolves in the third.

Cole White bopped a single to get things going, with Jack Porter mashing an RBI double to tie the game, and Landon Roberts ripping a run-scoring single to push CHS ahead 5-4.

The Wolves made it 6-4 in the seventh, after O’Neill was plunked, then came around to score when White launched a two-bagger.

Give South Whidbey credit, though, as the host team forced the tie by pushing two runs across in their last at-bats, all without getting a hit.

Two walks, some adventurous base-running, and an unfortunate Coupeville error left the door open just long enough for the stalemate to be forged.

Still, win, loss, or tie, the game showcased Coupeville’s bats, as all 10 players who saw the field collected a hit.

Falcons nip Wolves on diamond

One small break can be brutal.

Playing less than 24 hours after winning a battle for league supremacy, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball team took a small step backwards Thursday afternoon.

Dinged by back-to-back fielding errors at a crucial moment, the Wolves fell 3-1 at South Whidbey, allowing the Falcons to earn a season split in the series between next-door neighbors.

The non-conference loss drops Coupeville to 11-6 heading into Senior Night Friday against visiting Orcas Island.

The first time the Wolves and Falcons clashed this season, CHS pulled out a 3-2 win at home. Second time around, just as close, but not with as positive an ending.

“Probably some big game hangover,” said Coupeville coach Will Thayer.

The Wolves were likely still buzzing after handing Friday Harbor its first Northwest 2B/1B League loss of the season a day before, and they quickly jumped on South Whidbey when Hawthorne Wolfe rapped a leadoff double.

Unfortunately, the speedy senior never made it all the way home, starting a day-long trend in which Coupeville put runners on base in every inning, yet couldn’t break out a big rally.

The lone run for the Wolves came in the top of the third, when Jonathan Valenzuela smacked a two-out triple, then skittered home on a double off of Scott Hilborn’s bat.

Coupeville collected seven hits — three from Sage Sharp — and two walks, but stranded eight of those nine runners, making life dicey.

Valenzuela, who whiffed five while going the distance on the mound, pitched well, but South Whidbey scratched out just enough offense to carry the day.

The Falcons plated one run in the first, with a walk to Grady Davis bringing Nick Black in to score.

It was the bottom of the third which proved to be Coupeville’s Kryptonite, however, as Ashton Leland and Andrew Hilton both tapped home for South Whidbey thanks to Wolf errors.

From there, Coupeville was in lock-down mode, with catcher Xavier Murdy throwing out two would-be base stealers.

The Wolves cap a three-games-in-three-days run with Friday’s tilt with Orcas, and they’ll honor seniors Murdy, Wolfe, Cody Roberts, Cole Hutchinson, and Sharp.

CHS tennis schedule shuffles

The work of the high school sports scheduler is never done.

Especially in the spring, when weather and other issues frequently mess with the best laid plans.

Such is the case for the Coupeville girls tennis squad, which once again sees its schedule shifting.

A trip to South Whidbey this coming Monday, Apr. 18 has been bumped nearly a month out due to a conflict with a Falcon league match.

Meanwhile, a previously rained-out tilt with that same South Whidbey team, only with this match in Coupeville, has been rescheduled.

The new remaining schedule, knock on wood:

Monday, Apr. 25 — Friday Harbor (3:30)

Tuesday, May 3 — South Whidbey (3:30) — SENIOR NIGHT

Blazing bats, valiant victory

The bats were booming.

South Whidbey whacked back-to-back home runs Saturday, but the Coupeville High School varsity softball squad responded with a barrage of base-knocks.

Rapping out 20 hits, including a tater of their own, the Wolves held off their Island rivals, winning 15-5 on the road at Langley.

The non-conference victory gives CHS a home-and-away season sweep of the Falcons, and lifts Coupeville to 3-1 on the season.

Saturday’s tilt was a game the Wolves led from start to finish, but also one that they didn’t fully put away until the day’s final two innings.

Up 6-2 through five frames, Coupeville pushed three runs across in the sixth, then slapped an exclamation point on things with a six-run surge in the seventh inning.

That capped a game in which the Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play.

Pushing its advantage out to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Coupeville was cruising on both sides of the ball.

Until Chanel Sterba and Morgan Batchelor broke through with consecutive longballs.

If she was ruffled, Wolf hurler Izzy Wells never showed it, promptly setting the next six Falcons down on strikeouts.

The senior flame thrower recorded a season-best 17 K’s on the afternoon, requiring her teammates to only record four outs on their own.

With the game still close, Coupeville broke things open in the late going.

The sixth-inning rally started with Wolf frosh Mia Farris getting plunked by a wayward pitch, followed by a thunderous triple off the bat of senior Audrianna Shaw.

From there, a two-bagger from Savina Wells — which narrowly missed being a home run — and singles by Madison McMillan and Gwen Gustafson kept the good times going.

Things really got fun in the seventh, however, with Coupeville raining down eight hits in the frame, including Allie Lucero tagging a moon shot to join the exclusive homer-hittin’ society.

Doubles from Izzy Wells, Farris, and Taylor Brotemarkle didn’t travel quite as far, but also dealt severe damage to South Whidbey’s hopes.

“Late in the game we finally started hitting our stride offensively and got some runs to put the distance on them and put the game away,” said CHS coach Kevin McGranahan.

“We had some good hits when we were being aggressive.”
