Mitch and Tami Aparicio

Same location, different name.

A little over a month after the Penn Cove Brewing Company shut down, ending an eight-year run, one of the two brothers behind that business has reopened its Coupeville storefront.

Mitch and Tami Aparicio launched the newly named Whidbey Tides & Taps Saturday, just in time for the Penn Cove Mussel Fest, in the building which had housed the Coupeville Taproom.

The business is located at 103 S. Main, across from the elementary school.

Tami and I are super excited about bringing back the taproom we love and continuing to give back to the community that has done so much for us over the years,” Mitch Aparicio said in a statement on Facebook.

“Come by for a beer and say hi.”

His wife later chimed in, thanking all of their supporters.

“With the closing of Penn Cove Brewing Company, Mitch and I had some big decisions to make. We came to the realization that we were not ready to let go of the taproom adventure,” she said.

“We decided to open up a new business called Whidbey Tides & Taps and reopen the taproom to serve this community that we love!

“Thanks everyone for your overwhelming support and help getting ready for this!

“We have the most amazing employees, friends and customers that have all helped pull this together. We are beyond excited to keep serving everyone in this place we call home.”

Won’t someone think about the children?

Central Whidbey Cooperative Preschool, a beloved local institution for more than 40 years, has helped generations of children grow, and its work continues.

CWCP, which is a non-profit, is getting ready for its biggest fundraiser of the year, the “Wine, Bids & Co-op Kids” event Mar. 24.

The event, an evening of appetizers, music and a silent auction, will run from 6-8 PM and is intended for those 21 and older.

The funds raised go to lower the cost of tuition for enrolled families, replenish the CWCP scholarship fund and purchase school supplies.

There are numerous ways for the public to help, from buying tickets (just $10 a pop), bidding on items, and through donations, either monetary or with items which can be auctioned off during the evening.

No item is too big or too small, and could include just about anything — homemade, hand-crafted, a service, gift certificates, gift baskets, etc.

All donations are 100% tax deductible, and individuals and organizations will be acknowledged at the event, on Facebook and through a public message to the families which use CWCP.

Plus, if you donate an item for the auction, you nab two tickets to the event for free.

To purchase tickets or make donations, contact Mandi Murdy at 360-632-2069, Tami Aparicio at 360-632-5071 or email cwcpfundraising@gmail.com.

The legendary Central Whidbey Co-Op Preschool is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and it needs your help to make things special.

The school has planned a silent auction fundraiser for Saturday, Feb. 27, called “Co-Op Kids, Wine & Bids.”

The adults-only event will be held at the Coupeville Rec Hall from 6-9 PM and admission is $10.

Hors d’oeuvre and wine will be served and Lisa Toomey and Tishia Malone will provide the musical entertainment.

As they head towards the event, organizers are seeking donations for the auction.

In particular, they’re hoping that Co-Op alumni will join the effort, giving back to the school which helped shape them as young children.

The auction will include physical items as well as unique “experience based” auction items.

An example of the latter is former Coupeville High School baseball star Ben Etzell, who is currently playing college ball in Minnesota, is offering a “Batting Cage with Benjamin” experience.

All donations are tax deductible, as the school is a 501(c) non-profit.

If you’re interested in donating items or experiences for the auction, text or call Kristi Etzell (360-320-3910) or email her at simplesis01@yahoo.com.

To make financial donations or buy tickets to the event (pre-orders get a complimentary ticket in a raffle which will be held that night) pop over to the Co-Op’s website:
