Sylvia Hurlburt qualified for tri-districts in three events.

At least five Wolves are still in the hunt for a state track title.

Super sophomores Makana Stone and Sylvia Hurlburt qualified to advance to tri-districts in three events apiece, thanks to top-five performances Friday at the 1A District 1 track and field championships at Lynden Christian High School.

They’ll be joined there by junior Marisa Etzell, sophomore Jared Helmstadter and freshman Lauren Grove.

Stone smashed her school record in the 400 (again) and both she and Hurlburt qualified in the 200.

Both girls ran a leg on the school’s 4 x 200 relay squad, where they were joined by Grove and Etzell, while Hurlburt made the grade in the 100.

Helmstadter set a PR in the 400 to become the only Wolf boy to advance.

There is still hope for several other CHS athletes, however, as two relay teams and freshman shot putter Skyler Lawrence claimed sixth-place finishes and would be the first alternates to tri-districts.

Tri-districts are May 22 and 24 at King’s High School in Shoreline.

“Bye!!”

Every time she steps on the track, Makana Stone sets a PR or breaks a school record.

At least it seems that way.

The speedy Coupeville High School sophomore and her teammates blitzed through the first day of districts Wednesday and are set to return to Lynden to finish off the festivities Friday.

After that lurks the buzz of tri-districts and state.

While you’re waiting for it to all play out, take a gander at these fresh-off-the-presses photos courtesy travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

Exploding on the takeoff in the long jump.

Stickin' the landing.

Stickin’ the landing.

She just jumped over the freakin' fence (sort of...)!!!

She just jumped over the freakin’ fence (sort of…)!!!

Please keep it down — the Canadian-owned “local” papers are trying to take a nap.

But while they’re snoozing and losing, it is up to us, the rogues of Coupeville Sports, to swoop and scoop.

Thanks to travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who ended up down in Lynden Wednesday for Day 1 of the 1A District 1 track championships, we have not just photos of Coupeville High School students, but (bite me, South Whidbey Record!), snappy pics of Falcon senior supernova Maia Sparkman.

Why her, you ask?

Because, at a time when I was cheesing off most of the South End of Whidbey, Ms. Sparkman was gracious enough to consent to do an interview and allow me to write a feature story about her (https://coupevillesports.com/2013/06/30/the-falcons-are-alright-maia-sparkman-sparkles/) and maybe soften my frosty relationship with Langley … a bit.

She didn’t have to, but she did. And she didn’t have to be so smart and well-spoken in her comments, but I kind of think that’s her natural persona.

So, while she may not wear the red and black, Ms. Sparkman remains one of my favorites, a young woman of grace and refinement who mixes book smarts with athletic prowess.

A young woman we all should be proud of, regardless of what part of the Island we live on.

Marisa Etzell (John Fisken photo)

So did Marisa Etzell.

They’re getting faster at the right moment.

Jumping into the first day of the 1A District 1 Championships Wednesday at Lynden, six Coupeville High School track stars set PRs.

Better yet, most of them set themselves up to compete in the finals of their events Friday.

Makana Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt, Jared Helmstadter, Marisa Etzell, Lauren Grove and Mitchell Carroll all copped personal bests in an event, while Stone threw down the fastest time in the 400, even though she didn’t PR in that race.

The Wolves return to Lynden Christian High School Friday to wrap up Districts, with the hope of advancing as many athletes as possible on to Tri-Districts May 22 and 24 at Shoreline.

Mattea and Erin

Mattea Miller (left) and Erin Rosenkranz each won an event at the Last Chance Qualifier.

It was their last opportunity, and four Wolves went out as winners.

Competing at the Cascade Conference’s Last Chance Qualifier Friday in Sultan, Mattea Miller (800), Erin Rosenkranz (1600), Stephen Edwards (Long Jump) and Mitchell Carroll (Triple Jump) all claimed individual titles.

The meet, held a day after the league championships, was an opportunity for athletes to have one last crack at setting a time or nailing a throw that would advance them to next week’s district meet.
