Time to dig deep and find a miracle.

After absorbing an 8-4 loss to Vashon Island Tuesday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad finds itself in a tough spot.

The district playoff loss, which came on a neutral field at Mt. Tahoma High School, drops the Wolves to 7-8-2.

It also drops them into a loser-out game Thursday, one which presents a daunting task.

CHS has to travel 96 miles (one-way) to Orting High School, doesn’t play until 8 PM and faces Klahowya, a team the Wolf booters have never beaten in 10 previous games.

The Eagles are in the loser-out game because they were nipped Tuesday in a penalty kick shootout after ending regulation and overtime tied 3-3 with Charles Wright Academy.

Vashon and CWA play in the front-end of a doubleheader at Orting Thursday, with the winner advancing to state.

The loser of that game returns to Orting Saturday to face the survivor of the Thursday late game in a battle for District 3’s second slot to state.

For it to be Coupeville, the Wolves will have to do something no 1A Olympic League team has done in four years, upend Klahowya, which is 13-4-1 this year.

KSS has outscored CHS 47-5 over their 10 meetings, though the Wolves played the Eagles almost to a standstill in a 3-2 loss this season.

The Wolves fell behind early against Vashon, surrendering a pair of goals in the early moments of the game and trailing 6-1 at the half.

Sophomore Aram Leyva got Coupeville on the board with his 13th goal of the season, off an assist from William Nelson, and the Wolves were much sharper offensively after the break.

“We had a good halftime talk and came to life in the second half,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson.

CHS “won” that 40-minute span 3-2, with Derek Leyva adding to his Wolf boys single-season scoring record.

He punched in a hat trick in one half, with his three goals lifting him to 24 on the year. That leaves him just shy of the school record of 27, set by Mia Littlejohn.

UPDATE: Game moved from 8 PM at Orting High School to 5 PM at Silverdale Stadium. Moves saves Coupeville 86 miles of round-trip bus travel.

It’s been awhile.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad had some playoff success in the past, including a couple of trips to the state tourney.

But most of the current Wolves were still in elementary school the last time CHS won a playoff game on the pitch.

So, having knocked off five-time state champ Bellevue Christian 3-0 Saturday, notching their first postseason win since 2012, this group of players is entering uncharted waters.

The double-elimination portion of districts kicks off Tuesday, with Coupeville traveling to Mt. Tahoma High School to face Vashon Island.

Win or lose, they’ll play again Thursday, against either Klahowya or Charles Wright Academy.

As you count down the hours, here’s a look at what you need to know.

Coupeville booters Hunter Downes (3) and William Nelson celebrate a goal Monday afternoon. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Forget black and white stripes, these refs are fashion forward in their thinking.

But are they as ready to hit the runway as CHS assistant coach Luke Pelant? I think not.

CHS football star Cameron Toomey-Stout, with hand raised, challenges Pelant to a Zoolander-style runway walk-off. Yes, I’m sure that’s what’s happening. Well, pretty sure. OK, maybe .05% sure…

Back on the pitch, Sage Downes is busy sacrificing his noggin for his team.

It’s not going to get any easier.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad is off to a crisp start this year, but Monday marked the start of a four-game swing through the toughest part of the regular-season schedule.

And while the Wolves battled, they began their brush with their own murderer’s row by falling 3-1 to visiting Vashon Island.

The loss drops CHS to 4-3-1 on the season, while the Pirates climb to 6-1-2.

Next up for the Wolves is a home game Saturday against Forks, which is 6-0 and has outscored foes 32-1 this season.

Spartans goalie Gabriel Terrones opened the year with five straight shutout wins before surrendering a single, solitary score to Elma.

After that, Coupeville faces road rumbles with Port Angeles (6-2) and Klahowya (5-2-1).

Monday the Wolves got their lone goal from senior captain William Nelson.

It was his third tally of the season and the 34th goal Coupeville has notched.

With the game played under sunny skies, wanderin’ camera clicker John Fisken swung by Mickey Clark Field and spent some quality time plying his trade.

Julian Welling snags a hot shot at first. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Saturday was a busy day, for all of us.

Five Coupeville High School athletic teams took advantage of the nice weather, with three playing on the road.

Meanwhile I was in Maple Valley, deep into a week-long odyssey of helping my sister and her family move back to Whidbey after a 15-year exile on the main land.

At this point, I am running on very little sleep, and still have one more day of non-Coupeville Sports grunt work ahead of me, and Saturday was also short on wins for the Wolves.

So, we’re going to mix things up a bit and make this story a four-for-one special.

That guarantees I uphold my part of our unwritten agreement – that you, the readers, can peruse the previous day’s sports exploits with your morning cereal.

While also getting me to bed sometime before 3 AM in the morning…

So, we’re off.

JV baseball:

The lone Coupeville win Saturday came courtesy of the Wolf young guns, who held on for a 5-3 victory at Vashon Island.

CHS broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of four Pirate errors and a crucial one-out single from Shane Losey to plate four runners.

Another run in the fifth, this one featuring a single from Jacob Zettle and a sac fly from frosh Daniel Olson, capped Coupeville’s scoring.

That was enough for Wolf hurlers Johnny Carlson and Jered Brown, who combined to cruise in with the win.

Coming on in relief in the fifth, Brown was spot-on, striking out five over three innings, including Vashon’s final four hitters.

Zettle, Losey, Olson, Brown and Drake Borden all whacked base-hits in the game, helping the JV nab their first win in three games this season.

Varsity softball:

It started so strongly, but then something went a little haywire.

After crunching four hits and scoring three times in the top of the first, Coupeville’s offense hit a lull, and the Wolves fell 11-3 at Vashon.

The non-conference loss drops the softball sluggers to 2-1 on the season.

The Wolves came off the ferry on fire, with Lauren Rose walking to open things, followed by four consecutive singles off of the bats of Scout Smith, Katrina McGranahan, Veronica Crownover and Hope Lodell.

With McGranahan and Crownover picking up RBIs, things looked great for CHS.

And, while Vashon scraped out two runs of its own in the bottom of the first, the Wolves held on to a 3-2 lead until the bottom of the fourth, when a six-run rally by their hosts took a little bit of the shine off the day.

After putting together four straight hits in the first, the Wolves didn’t collect another hit until Coral Caveness singled in the fourth.

Sarah Wright and Crownover punched base-hits in the fifth, as well, but the rally ended before it began, and an interference call on a Wolf runner derailed any comeback hopes in the seventh.

“Today was just not our day,” said Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan. “We were a little off all day and never really had an answer for it.

“Vashon hit the ball well all day and they hit the gaps. Our defense had some little errors but all in all it was a good defensive day,” he added. “Today our offense let us down and we paid for it.

“We will see them again at districts and next time we will give them a better game.”

Varsity baseball:

A day after ten-running North Mason, Coupeville was ten-runned by Vashon Island, falling 10-0 in five innings on the road.

The non-conference loss drops the Wolves diamond men to 3-3 on the season.

“Ran into a tough team,” said CHS coach Chris Smith. “Good opponent to see we need to keep working.”

Coupeville put runners on base in four of five innings, but a double play in the first killed their best chance of getting an early rally up and going.

The Wolves were out-hit 9-3, with Vashon tagging three extra-base hits.

Joey Lippo, Dane Lucero and Kyle Rockwell collected Coupeville’s lonely base-knocks, while Wolf hurler Matt Hilborn walked twice.

Varsity boys soccer:

The myth endures.

Klahowya won its 24th straight 1A Olympic League game, blanking Coupeville 5-0 in a game played on Whidbey.

The loss drops the Wolves to 1-1 in league play (they’re tied with Port Townsend), and puts them a game-and-a-half behind the Eagles (3-0), who are seeking a fourth-straight conference title.

Facing a stingy KSS defense, Coupeville was held scoreless for the first time in five games this season, and sits at 2-2-1 overall.

“The first half we kept things close,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “We had a number of good opportunities, and played pretty much even with them, only conceding a counter attack goal late in the half.

“The second half did not go as well;  Klahowya came out a little more aggressive in the second half and we didn’t match it,” he added. “The boys pretty much ran out of gas.”

Still, the first half gives Coupeville hope for the  next time.

“We did see that we can play with them, we just need to do it for the full game,” Nelson said. “I will be looking forward to our rematch with them; I know we can do better.”

JV boys soccer:

Coupeville fell 7-1. And that’s all I know.

Sophomore Jacobi Pilgrim and Coupeville’s other young varsity players got plenty of floor time Friday at Vashon. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The scoreboard doesn’t always tell the whole story.

If that’s all you looked at Friday, it might be a bit of a letdown, as a Coupeville High School boys basketball squad coming off of an emotional overtime win came back down to Earth.

Unable to mount much of a sustained offensive charge against a strong Vashon Island defense, the Wolves fell 52-27 deep on the road.

The non-conference loss drops CHS to 2-4 heading into a home tilt against undefeated Bellevue Christian Saturday. Tip-off is 3 PM.

What knowing just the score won’t tell you is the Wolves were missing starters Cameron Toomey-Stout and Joey Lippo.

One of their replacements, Jered Brown, made it through the first half, before illness left him on the bench after the halftime break.

With three key players either missing or only able to play reduced minutes, CHS coach Brad Sherman went deep into his bench.

Sophomore Mason Grove made his varsity debut, while other young guns like Ulrik Wells, Gavin Knoblich and Jacobi Pilgrim saw substantial playing time.

“Lots of young guys stepped up tonight and gave us some good minutes, which was really nice to see,” Sherman said.

“Getting them some time now, before we hit the league schedule hard, is ultimately a good thing, if we can develop a little more depth in some areas.”

Vashon, which spread its scoring out across the roster, came out on fire in the early going, shooting the Wolves out of the gym before they could get their legs fully under them.

The Pirates turned a 16-4 lead after one quarter into a 35-10 bulge at the half.

Things were different in the second half, however, as Coupeville battled Vashon to a 17-17 stalemate over the third and fourth quarters.

“Really a lot of credit to Vashon. That’s a good basketball team,” Sherman said. “Our guys fought hard. They always fight hard. I love that about them.”

Hunter Smith went for 10 of his game-high 14 points in the second half, including draining 8-10 free throws.

In a game where neither team spent too much time at the free throw stripe, both teams shot especially well when they did wind up there.

Vashon was a flawless 6-6, while Coupeville finished 9-12.

Ethan Spark added eight points, including a pair of three-balls, to back Smith, while Kyle Rockwell banged down low for a season-high four points.

Kyle played tough, he’s doing well,” Sherman said. “It’s been nice to see.”

Dane Lucero tickled the twines on a free throw to round out the scoring and defensive buzz-saw Hunter Downes spent the night terrorizing the Pirates on the boards and in the paint.

Coupeville, which plays its next five games at home, sits atop the Olympic League in the early going, tied at 1-0 with Klahowya. Port Townsend (1-1) and Chimacum (0-2) bring up the rear.

With the Wolves playing virtually all their league games at the end of the schedule — eight of their final 10 games are conference clashes — the early part of the season gives CHS a chance to prepare for the games which will dictate their playoff fate.

“Always hurts to leave without the win, but we have to be forward-looking,” Sherman said. “What’s ultimately important in these is that, win or lose, we are getting ourselves ready for our league schedule.

“We play a tough non-league schedule and that’s a good thing,” he added. “These are good tests for us and each time we get to evaluate where we can improve, to get to where we know we want to be sitting at the end of the year.”
