You can’t stop their roll.

Rising in the polls and beating opponents by ever-bigger margins, the Whitman College women’s basketball squad is fast becoming a juggernaut.

Sparked by eight points and four rebounds from Coupeville High School grad Makana Stone, the Blues threw down an 89-59 beat-down on visiting Louisiana College Friday night.

The win, coming in the first round of the two-day Kim Evanger Raney Classic in Walla Walla, lifts Whitman to 8-0 on the season.

The Blues will face Colorado College Saturday in the tourney finale, then head to Honolulu Dec. 19-20 for the Hawaii Tournament.

Whitman put Friday’s game on ice fairly quickly, jumping out to a 27-14 lead after one quarter, before cruising home for the win.

Emily Rommel paced the Blues with 16, while three of her fellow starters dropped 11 apiece.

Coming off the bench as a super sub, Stone hit a pair of jump shots in the second quarter, then padded her scoring totals with two layups in the third.

On the season, she is averaging 6.3 points and 5.4 rebounds a night, and her 43 rebounds are third-best on the squad.

First they moved up three slots in the polls, then they wrecked another foe.

Whitman College’s women’s basketball squad, which includes former Coupeville High School legend Makana Stone, routed visiting Whitworth 61-50 Tuesday night to improve to a flawless 7-0.

The Blues entered the night ranked #22 in the most recent Women’s Basketball Coaches Association D-3 poll.

Whitman rolled to its second straight Northwest Conference win, using a 34-18 run over the middle two quarters to turn a tied ball game into a 16-point advantage.

Stone snared three of her five rebounds during that surge, while also picking up a steal.

She hit a season low with just a single point, off of a fourth quarter free throw, but she had the second-most rebounds for Whitman as it controlled the boards to a 36-25 tune.

Whitman spread its scoring around, with three players hitting double figures.

Emily Rommel popped for 15, Chelsi Brewer banked home 11 and Maegen Martin knocked down 10.

Through seven games, Stone, who is averaging 17 minutes a game off the bench, is putting up 6.0 points and 5.6 rebounds a night.

She leads the team in shooting percentage at 54.5% (18 of 33) and has seven steals, six assists and two blocks.

Whitman’s next four games come tourney-style, two in Walla Walla and two in Honalulu.

The Blues will play in the Kim Evanger Raney Classic Dec. 9-10 at home, facing Louisiana College and Colorado College.

After that it’s off to the islands for the Hawaii Tournament Dec. 19-20, where their foes will be Occidental College and the University of the Redlands.

Whitman then takes a two-week-plus break between games, returning to conference play Jan. 6 against Linfield College.

The Blues close with 14 straight league games, the first four on their home court.

Two undefeated teams took the floor Friday night, one left still perfect.

Advantage the team that gives a uniform to Makana Stone.

With the former Coupeville supernova continuing to play a key role off the bench, the Whitman College women’s basketball squad thrashed host Willamette 61-46 in both team’s league opener.

The win lifts the Blues to 6-0 overall, 1-0 in Northwest Conference play.

Whitman got double-digit scoring from four players, led by Alysse Ketner, who banged home 15 and Emily Rommel, who went for 12 points and 12 rebounds.

But back on Whidbey what we really care about is how Stone’s freshman campaign is playing out, and she once again used her minutes smartly.

On the floor for 13 minutes in a battle of 5-0 teams, she scored five points, pulled down three rebounds, dealt out an assist and collected another tooth-rattling rejection.

Through six games Stone is the best shooter on the team, knocking down 18 of 31 shots for a crisp 58.1%.

She’s third on the Blues in rebounding (5.7 a night), fifth in scoring (6.8 per game) and has six assists, six steals and two blocks.

Whitman, which is ranked #25 in the nation in D-3 play, returns to Walla Walla to face Whitworth Dec. 6.

The Blues, ranked #25 in the NCAA D-3 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association poll, exit Portland at a pristine 5-0, and don’t play again until Dec. 2.

What was once a close game became a blowout with Stone playing a key role in the surge.

Whitman broke open a 6-6 game with a 14-0 first quarter run in which the frosh snared three boards, dealt out an assist and pilfered a steal.

Stone was a woman for all quarters Wednesday, adding a rebound and a layup in the second quarter and a bucket in the fourth, while dominating in the third.

She pulled down four rebounds in that quarter, made off with another steal, recorded her first block at the college level and tossed in three points.

Whitman controlled the glass, out-rebounding Warner Pacific 53-32, while also forcing their hosts to turn the ball over 21 times.

Alysse Ketner paced the Blues with a team-high 14 points, while Mady Burdett tossed in 10 and Emily Rommel had nine points and 10 rebounds.

For the season, Stone is proving to be Whitman’s most dangerous weapon off the bench.

Makana Stone is a difference maker.

When the Coupeville High School grad checked in early in the second quarter Tuesday, her Whitman College women’s basketball team was clinging to a 22-21 lead against host Multnomah.

But with Stone on the floor, the Blues broke the game open with a 19-4 run and never looked back, rolling to a 73-52 non-conference win.

The victory lifts Whitman to 4-0 on the season.

A key part of the surge came thanks to Stone’s patented ability to clean the boards, as she hauled down seven of her season-best eight rebounds during the second quarter.

She also scored all four of her points, hitting a layup and slipping a pair of free-throws through the twines.

Chelsi Brewer paced Whitman with a game-high 21, while Emily Rommel and Maegen Martin hit for 11 points apiece.

Stone had three assists and a steal to go with her four points and eight rebounds.

Through the first four games of her college career, the former Wolf is averaging 7.3 points (#4 on the team) and 5.8 rebounds (#2) while coming off the bench for the Blues.

Her shooting percentage of 61.9% (13 of 21) is tops on the squad.

Whitman plays back-to-back nights in Portland, with a game against Warner Pacific Wednesday night. The Blues are then off until Dec. 2.
