Wolf Mom Jenny Porter, burnin’ down the house. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

We knew her before you knew her.

Newcomers to Cow Town see Jenny Porter as a full-time firefighter and a Wolf Mom to three kids, two of whom are athletic stars at Coupeville High School.

But those in the know remember her brewing up beans at Miriam’s Espresso back in the day.

Now, wearing a lot more equipment and turning up the heat quite a bit, Porter spends her days battling blazes, such as the controlled burn seen in the pics above and below.

This fire, happening in Oak Harbor, was a training exercise Saturday, as area firefighters cleared a house from land which will one day house Oak Harbor Fire District Station 82.

Valerie (Sebo) Sem

Paths crossed; lives touched.

Valerie Sem graduated from Oak Harbor High School, before my own brief time in those hallways.

Where we came into contact was later, in her role as a Wolf Mom, when her daughter Julianne began to appear in the pages of Coupeville Sports.

A tennis player who helped the Wolves win titles, an honor student, part of the CHS theater troupe, she was a remarkably bright, very kind young woman.

Still is, I’m sure.

Valerie and I became Facebook friends somewhere in there, and we may have said a few words in passing.

Like her daughter, she always seemed very kind.

In late June, Mrs. Sem wrote one of the most heartbreaking posts I’ve seen on social media.

She talked about her painful battle with stage four cancer and her decision to bring her battle to an end on her own terms the following day.

The outpouring of love from her friends was immense, and I hope it gave her comfort in her final hours.

I knew her only in passing, connected as part of Wolf Nation, so I can’t speak with the depth of love others could, and still are doing.

All I can say is this — you seemed like a truly lovely human being, Valerie — something carried on by your daughter — and you will not be forgotten.

From her family:

Valerie Sem died peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 27 with her family at her side.

She was born March 10, 1960 in Eugene Oregon, the daughter of Robert and Joan Sebo, the sister to Renee, Rob and D’ann.

Val graduated from Oak Harbor High School and attended Pacific Lutheran University.

She worked at Mark-it Food’s in Oak Harbor and later went on to put her mark on Sebo’s Hardware in Anacortes.

She enjoyed boating, traveling and walking on beaches looking for sea glass and shells.

Val was an avid hiker, gardener and party planner.

No matter the occasion she always won the award for being the best dressed.

Val was a friend to everyone and made friends wherever she went.

Val is survived by her husband Dave, their son Steven and daughter Julianne.

She is also survived by her father Robert (June) Sebo, her brother, sisters and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother Joan.

Per her request there will be no service held; in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Whidbey Hospice, or the charity of your choice.

A celebration of life will be arranged at a later date.

Honor Val by taking a hike and having a glass of wine.

Sarah Leavell

From one Wolf Mom to another.

With Salon Blue ending its time in downtown Coupeville, and owner Naomi Welshans heading to new off-Island adventures with husband (and former Wolf baseball coach) Josh, the Mariner’s Court building on Front Street has an opening.

Its new occupant, announced Wednesday, will be The Beauty Cove, to be owned and operated by Sarah Leavell beginning in June.

The mother of Wolf athletes Anya and Kaitlyn has worked at The Seaside Spa & Salon in Coupeville since 2012.

Sarah Leavell, who originally studied cosmetology at Centralia Beauty College, issued the following statement on Facebook:

I am so excited to serve all your hair and beauty needs.

With many thanks and help from Naomie and our amazing community, I took a leap of faith and hope that this opportunity would come, and it has.

I have the keys and can’t wait to get started.

In the next two weeks I will be perfecting my brand and setting up the salon.

I look forward to serving you in my new location!

A celebration of life has been set for Lanie Kiel.

The much-loved Wolf Mom, who treated her daughter’s teammates as additional children of her own, bestowing hugs and non-stop encouragement, passed away in March after a ferocious battle with cancer.

Lanie’s soaring spirit and gentle kindness will be honored in an event set for the Coupeville Rec Hall.

The celebration will run from 4:00-8:00 PM Friday, Aug. 19.

“In true Lanie style we will honor her with a simple gathering with light refreshments, good music, and great people,” said daughter Kacie.

Attendees are asked to wear pink or Hawaiian prints.

If you have any photos, videos, or song requests for the slideshow, they can be sent to katiekiel13@gmail.com.
