The medal hunt continues.
Coupeville High School sophomore Tenley Stuurmans split a pair of matches Friday at the 2B/1B state girls’ tennis championships and will return to the Yakima Tennis Club Saturday with a chance to finish in the top four in singles.
Meanwhile, her teammates, seniors Dahlia Miller and Aleksia Jump, waged a strong fight in the doubles competition but were eliminated after losing twice.
Stuurmans, who also made it to Yakima as an 8th grader, opened play Friday with a full-tilt, three-hour war against state tourney vet Kayden Koth of Manson.
While the other three first-round singles matches were decided in straight sets, their rumble went to the limit, before the Eastern Washington senior pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
Koth fell 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals to two-time state runner-up Gursmir Sahota of Jenkins (Chewelah), but Stuurmans bounced back in her own match, thrashing Logan Bordner of Okanogan 6-2, 6-1 to claim her first state win.
Gursmir Sahota, who lost to big sis Avi in the championship match in both 2024 and 2025, will play freshman Anika Love of Forest Ridge for the title Saturday.
Love beat Stuurmans earlier this month to claim the District 1/2 title.
Coupeville’s ace faces Natalie Richardson of La Salle, last year’s 3rd place finisher, in another loser-out bout to open Saturday, while Koth will square off against Avery Boswell of Freeman.
The winners of those matches advance to the 3rd/4th place match.
Miller and Jump, who are in their first year as a doubles team, opened their state tourney experience with a spirited 6-3, 6-1 loss to Jacqueline Benitez and Sarai Romero of Granger.
The Wolf duo then wrapped their hardcourt run against Cora Grooms and Emily Howder of Jenkins (Chewelah), falling 6-0, 6-1.
The other doubles tandem from District 1/2 was comprised of Friday Harbor siblings Hazel and Norah Leighton.
The siblings lost 6-0, 6-0 to Kara McMillan and Zephyr Woras of Liberty Bell and 6-3, 6-3 to Emmalee Doughty and Marisa Dahl of Newport.
