The medal hunt continues.

Coupeville High School sophomore Tenley Stuurmans split a pair of matches Friday at the 2B/1B state girls’ tennis championships and will return to the Yakima Tennis Club Saturday with a chance to finish in the top four in singles.

Meanwhile, her teammates, seniors Dahlia Miller and Aleksia Jump, waged a strong fight in the doubles competition but were eliminated after losing twice.

Stuurmans, who also made it to Yakima as an 8th grader, opened play Friday with a full-tilt, three-hour war against state tourney vet Kayden Koth of Manson.

While the other three first-round singles matches were decided in straight sets, their rumble went to the limit, before the Eastern Washington senior pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

Koth fell 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals to two-time state runner-up Gursmir Sahota of Jenkins (Chewelah), but Stuurmans bounced back in her own match, thrashing Logan Bordner of Okanogan 6-2, 6-1 to claim her first state win.

Gursmir Sahota, who lost to big sis Avi in the championship match in both 2024 and 2025, will play freshman Anika Love of Forest Ridge for the title Saturday.

Love beat Stuurmans earlier this month to claim the District 1/2 title.

Coupeville’s ace faces Natalie Richardson of La Salle, last year’s 3rd place finisher, in another loser-out bout to open Saturday, while Koth will square off against Avery Boswell of Freeman.

The winners of those matches advance to the 3rd/4th place match.

Miller and Jump, who are in their first year as a doubles team, opened their state tourney experience with a spirited 6-3, 6-1 loss to Jacqueline Benitez and Sarai Romero of Granger.

The Wolf duo then wrapped their hardcourt run against Cora Grooms and Emily Howder of Jenkins (Chewelah), falling 6-0, 6-1.

The other doubles tandem from District 1/2 was comprised of Friday Harbor siblings Hazel and Norah Leighton.

The siblings lost 6-0, 6-0 to Kara McMillan and Zephyr Woras of Liberty Bell and 6-3, 6-3 to Emmalee Doughty and Marisa Dahl of Newport.

They’re three wins away from a state title.

A trio of Coupeville High School netters have advanced to the 2B/1B state tournament and now they know their path.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released the brackets Sunday for the double-elimination event, which goes down May 22-23 at the Yakima Tennis Club.

Sophomore Tenley Stuurmans, making her second trip to the big dance after qualifying as an 8th grader, opens against senior Kayden Koth of Manson.

A repeat state qualifier who has primarily played doubles in the past, Koth has signed to continue her net career at Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho.

Meanwhile, the doubles duo of Coupeville seniors Dahlia Miller and Aleksia Jump, who hadn’t played together until this spring, will square off with Jacqueline Benitez and Sarai Romero from Granger.

Start times are still to be determined.

Win or lose, all three Wolves get a second match Friday. Keep playing into Saturday and they’ll have a shot at bringing home hardware, as the top four finishers earn trophies.

The Amy Yee Tennis Center was their house.

Playing some of their best tennis of the season Wednesday in Seattle, the Coupeville High School netters claimed the District 1/2 team title while qualifying three girls for next week’s state tourney.

Wolf seniors Dahlia Miller and Aleksia Jump, in their first season as a hardcourt duo, won all three of their matches to earn a title, while sophomore Tenley Stuurmans finished runner-up in the singles royal rumble.

It’s the second trip to state for Stuurmans, who advanced to the big dance as an 8th grader.

Love and the Wolf trio will be joined at state by Friday Harbor sisters Norah and Hazel Leighton, who finished second in doubles.

The sun was shining, and the forehand winners were exploding off the court.

Blue skies and a welcome lack of prairie wind greeted the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team Friday, as it battled visiting Granite Falls in the last few minutes before Spring Break arrived.

The Wolves smoked their rivals in the singles matches, but came up just short in doubles play, eventually falling 3-2 in the non-conference match.

Now 2-2 on the season, Coupeville is off for two weeks and doesn’t play at home again until the end of April.

When they return from their extended break, the Wolves travel to Friday Harbor (Apr. 17), Granite Falls (Apr. 20), and University Prep (Apr. 25), not hosting a match on their own courts again until Apr. 29, when Friday Harbor travels to Whidbey.

Friday’s match consisted of pro sets for everyone, with several of the doubles matches going down to the wire.

The closest battle in varsity play came at #3 doubles, where sisters Hailey and Hazel Goldman rallied hard to push the Tigers to the brink.

The Wolf siblings both came up with big shots in tense moments, mixing crosscourt winners with artful lobs dropped into the alleys.
