They survived and thrived.
Running in “a crazy downpour that lasted both races” Friday in Sultan, the Coupeville Middle School cross country team had seven runners claim top 10 performances at the seven-team Return of the Salmon Invitational.
Propelled by their frontrunners, the Wolves, despite being “covered in mud, soaking wet, and freezing,” finished second in both team competitions as well, finishing closely behind next-door neighbor South Whidbey.
Lakewood, Monroe Christian, and Sultan rounded out the top five on the boy’s side of things, with Granite Falls and Lakewood earning third and fourth, respectively, in the girls team clash.

Competing on a 3,000-meter course featuring a complicated double loop which caught several runners by surprise, the Wolves nailed things even with “squishy shoes and muddy legs.”
Sarai Dangerfield and Juniper Dotson paced CMS, finishing in a tie for 3rd place, with Ava Clark (5th) and Abi Dangerfield (10th) joining the duo in the top 10.
Clark, who finished 34th last season as a 6th grader, improved her time by nearly three minutes this time out in one of the day’s strongest performances.

Meanwhile, Jesse Kehoe (6th), Nicholas Strong (9th), and Cole Van Dyke (10th) were among the quickest boys on the trail.
Overall, 23 Wolves hit the tape for Amber Wyman’s harrier squad in what was their first trip off the island this season.
Coupeville returns to action Thursday, October 1, when it hosts a seven-team meet at Fort Casey State Park — hopefully without the rain.
The Wolf boys sent 13 runners down the trail.
