They aced the pre-test.
With the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships next up on the schedule, the Coupeville High School cross country squad went for a run in Bellingham Thursday to get some prep work done.
And it went rather well.
Competing at the 11-team Lake Lap Invite at Lake Padden, the Wolves claimed second place in the boys’ gold division, third in the boys’ silver class, and fourth in the girls’ platinum race.
Plus, freshman Leo Davis won an individual title in the silver class, outgunning a Sehome harrier by almost seven seconds to top a field of 63 runners on a 2.6-mile course.
With big-timers like Lynden Christian, Meridian, Sehome, Ferndale, and Lynden on site, Coupeville was the only 2B school, but outran schools with much-bigger student bodies.
As she exited Bellingham and began to plan for the next race, CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting was beaming.
“Their times were phenomenal,” she said. “I love this race as a tune up before heading into the league championship race.
“So proud of them!!!”
The Lake Lap Invite was the final regular season run for the Wolves, with the league, district, and state meets still remaining on the schedule.
The NWL championship event goes down first, set for Wednesday, October 21 in Mount Vernon.
