They put an exclamation point on the season.
Competing at the state cross country championships in Pasco Saturday, the Coupeville High School boys finished 8th in the 2B team race, the best showing for a Wolf team since the CHS girls earned 4th place in 1982.
Led by sophomore Cyrus Sparacio, who hit the tape in 7th place — best individual finish for a Cow Town runner since Tyler King won a state title in 2010 — this year’s squad nailed the third-best finish ever for a CHS boys team.
Competing as a full unit for a fourth straight season at the Sun Willows Golf Course, the 2026 Wolves trail only the 1976 and 1977 teams, which each finished 5th.
And with only one senior, four-time state meet participant Kenneth Jacobsen, Coupeville is primed to be back and even stronger next fall.

Coupeville running guru Elizabeth Bitting is joined by (left to right) Ossian Merkel, Kenneth Jacobsen, Green, Sparacio, Henry Purdue, Leo Davis, and Archer Schwarz.
This time around, the Wolves were hot on the collective heels of Colfax in the battle for 7th, with Freeman, Liberty Bell, Northwest Christian (Colbert), Cle Elum-Roslyn, Goldendale, and Chewelah comprising the top six.
Waylon Stoneburg-Schafer, a junior from Cle Elum, claimed the individual crown.
With his 7th place finish, Sparacio jumped 57 spots from his state meet performance as a freshman, while current fab frosh Henry Purdue surged 11 spots down the stretch Saturday to crack the top 50.
Beckett Green and Ossian Merkel joined Sparacio in making their second trip to state, while Leo Davis and Archer Schwarz made their big run debuts.
On the girls’ side of things, freshman Anna Powers and senior Ivy Rudat held up well in a packed field which mashed together 2B and 1B runners, then sent them out across a 5,000-meter course.
Powers was the 10th fastest freshman in the field, while Rudat improved 22 seconds and jumped 19 slots from her performance at state as a junior.
Manson sophomore Grace Walsh repeated as the state champ in the 2B/1B classification, with trail powerhouse Pope John Paul II claiming the team title.
Coupeville, which revived a full in-school cross country program in 2018 after a 20+ year shutdown, has sent runners to state every year since, with the exception of 2020, when the pandemic erased the season.
