Hit-happy Wolves spank Darrington

Rollin’ and strollin’.

Raining down base-knocks all day Wednesday, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad roared to a third-straight conference win.

Thrashing visiting Darrington 10-1, the Wolves soar to 3-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-3 overall, heading into their biggest test of the season.

Coupeville, which sits a half game up on Friday Harbor (2-0) and Orcas Island (2-0) in NWL action, travels off-Island for a doubleheader Friday afternoon.

That twin-bill will be held on Friday Harbor, where the defending league champs await.

The Wolverines were the only NWL team to beat Coupeville last year during a pandemic-altered season, so the plan is likely for some sweet, sweet revenge.

Coupeville primed the well Wednesday, with six hitters combining to collect 10 base-knocks off of Darrington’s pitching staff.

Eight of those hits came across the first two innings, as the Wolves put up four runs in the bottom of the first, then matched that with another four-spot in the second.

After that, CHS was content to tack on a run in the fourth and one more in the sixth, coming close to ten-running Darrington while still getting a chance to play a full seven innings.

Coupeville was clicking in every facet of the game, with hurlers Hawthorne Wolfe, Chase Anderson, and Jonathan Valenzuela combining to toss a one-hitter while striking out six Loggers.

At the plate, Cody Roberts (2B, 1B), Alex Murdy (1B, 1B), Valenzuela (1B, 1B), Xavier Murdy (1B, 1B), Scott Hilborn (1B), and Peyton Caveness (1B) all recorded hits for the Wolves.

Wolves blank Hurricanes

Same stats, different results.

Coupeville and Mount Vernon Christian each racked up four hits and three walks Tuesday, but the Wolves took full advantage of their opportunities, while preventing the Hurricanes from doing the same.

That was enough to lift Coupeville’s varsity baseball squad to a 3-0 win on its home diamond, kicking off a busy week of Northwest 2B/1B League action.

The victory lifts the Wolves to 2-0 in conference play, 3-3 overall, with another NWL bout set for Wednesday at home against Darrington.

CHS wraps the week with a doubleheader Friday on the road at defending league champ Friday Harbor.

Tuesday’s tilt was a pitcher’s duel, with the wham-bam combo of Wolf hurlers Cody Roberts and Scott Hilborn combining to whiff 12 Hurricanes.

“Scott and Cody pitched awesome!” said Coupeville coach Will Thayer.

After escaping a big-time jam in the top of the first, Roberts was largely lights out, putting up 10 K’s.

The senior righty had the bags full after giving up a pair of singles and a walk, but brought the hammer down with a vengeance, ending the danger with his third punch-out of the frame.

After that, the best Mount Vernon Christian could do was put just a single runner aboard in a given inning, with Roberts and Hilborn stranding every Hurricane who (momentarily) breached their defense.

Coupeville pushed across one runner in the bottom of the second, and two more in the third to claim an advantage it would not surrender.

Xavier Murdy was plunked by a pitch to set up the game’s first run.

After moving to second on a ground-out, X-Man stole third, before scampering home when a third strike — which would have ended the inning — was dropped.

In the third, Wolf 8th grader Chase Anderson whacked a single and Jonathan Valenzuela walked, with the former coming around to tap home on a Hilborn groundout, and the latter scoring on an RBI single from Peyton Caveness.

Coupeville had a couple of other chances, most noticeably in the fourth inning when it had two runners on base, but MVC’s pitching staff held the Wolves at bay.

Not that it mattered much as solid teamwide defense and crackling fastballs from their pitchers helped the Wolves close things out.

Caveness paced CHS with a pair of hits, Anderson and Jack Porter added base-knocks, and Valenzuela (2) and Murdy (1) accounted for Coupeville’s walks.

The stats are there, just not the wins.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo continues to pile up numbers while playing baseball for the University of Maine at Presque Isle, though the Owls still need to work on improving their win/loss record.

UMPI was swept in a four-game weekend series against Fisher College, dropping doubleheaders Friday and Saturday to run its season mark to 2-13.

Lippo went down fighting, however, racking up six hits, three runs, two walks, and an RBI while starting all four games.

The former Wolf tops the Owls in runs (14), hits (19), RBI (8), walks (8), and batting average (.404) this season, and is tied for #1 in triples (1) and home runs (1).

He’s second in on-base percentage (.474) and slugging percentage (.553).

Lippo, who was a three-sport athlete during his high school playing days, is a sophomore at UMPI.

Fight for your right (to be in first place)

We’re starting to see some movement.

As we work our way towards the end of March, Northwest 2B/1B League teams are ramping up and beginning to play more conference tilts, accounting for some jockeying in the standings.

If weather permits, the week ahead will keep that trend going.

Coupeville High School baseball has four games in four days — all NWL bouts — hosting Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday and Darrington Wednesday.

After that, the Wolves head to Friday Harbor to face their biggest hardball rival in a Friday afternoon doubleheader.

Meanwhile, the CHS softball squad hosts Darrington, then plays its own twin-bill on Friday Harbor, while Wolf girls tennis travels to Oak Harbor Friday for a non-conference match-up.

Wolf JV toppled in road clash

Perfection isn’t easy.

The Coupeville High School JV baseball team entered play Saturday undefeated on the young season but stumbled for the first time.

Falling 10-3 at South Whidbey in a non-conference rumble, the Wolf young guns see their record slip to 2-1.

The host Falcons jumped on the scoreboard early and often, scoring in each of the first four innings.

Two runs in the bottom of the first, followed by a single tally in the second, then two more in the third stretched South Whidbey’s advantage to 5-1, before Coupeville pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth to cut things to 5-3.

Unfortunately, South Whidbey put together its best offensive surge of the game in the bottom half of that frame, doubling its output with a five-run rally.

Coupeville relief ace Coop Cooper kept the Falcons at bay after that, tossing two scoreless innings while whiffing a pair of hitters.

But there was no late-game rally for the Wolves, as they couldn’t come up with a hit across the final three innings, and also had a runner picked off of first base after walking.

On the day CHS tallied six hits, with Aiden O’Neill, Zane Oldenstadt, Landon Roberts, Camden Glover, Marcelo Gebhard, and Cooper each collecting a base-knock.

The Wolf JV returns to action Apr. 4, when it travels the other direction on Whidbey, heading to Oak Harbor.
