The hardwood comes alive in summertime.

The Coupeville High School gym will be alive with the sounds of squeaking shoes July 18-20, as high-level NBC Camps offers a basketball event for kids ages 8-12.

Cost is $230 per camper, which covers 18 hours of hoops action.

Each day runs from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM, with first-day check-in at 8:30 AM.

Campers should bring a basketball, a sack lunch and snacks, water bottle, and a signed medical waiver — unless their parent has already completed it while registering online.

NBC Camps, which launched in 1971, focuses on “training the total athlete” with camps “elevating skill level through intensive skill training.”

“We break down each skill into specific portions which ingrain the skill and creates ‘muscle memory’,” NBC Camps says in its brochure.

“The intensity of our camps help maximize the “heightened” environment necessary for growth.

“Our camps are high energy, fun, and unlike any other camp experience. Come elevate your game and change your life.”

Players are divided according to age, skill, and experience, with a typical ratio of one NBC coach per 10 athletes.

The big payback!

Avenging a loss from earlier in the season, Baerum, and its American assassin, Makana Stone, knocked off Asker 67-59 Tuesday in Norwegian professional basketball action.

The win, spurred by a 12-point, eight-rebound, three-assist, four-steal performance from the former Coupeville ace, lifts Baerum to 12-5 on the season.

Asker drops to 13-6, while both teams continue to chase Ulriken (18-0) in the seven-team Kvinneligaen.

Next up for Stone and Co. is a match with Midtbyen Feb. 19.

Tuesday’s win gives Baerum a 2-1 edge on Asker this season, with the teams set to meet Mar. 26 in the regular season finale.

Asker had the early lead in the third go-round but couldn’t hold on to the advantage.

Baerum turned a 14-12 deficit at the end of the first quarter into a super-slim 39-38 lead by the half.

After that, Stone and her associates stretched the margin to 50-44 at the end of the third quarter, before holding on for the victory.

Asker was led by guard Tayler Bennett, who rained down fire, recording a game-high 33 points.

Baerum’s answer was to spread the ball out, with four different players tallying double-digit scoring.

Tiril Hjelde rippled the nets for 16 points, while Julie McCarthy and Abbey Hoff banked in 14 apiece to go with Stone’s 12.

On the season, Coupeville’s progeny has racked up 313 points, 210 rebounds, 38 assists, 47 steals, and 10 blocked shots.

Alex (left) and Xavier Murdy are one of the most-successful brother duos in CHS basketball history. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Alex Murdy made some more history Friday night.

The high-flying Coupeville High School senior knocked down 15 points against Friday Harbor, cracking the 400-point club for his varsity career.

While that’s a nice personal accomplishment, there’s actually more to it than that.

With the help of older brother Xavier, who graduated last year, the Murdy boys become just the eighth pair of brothers to top 400 points in the 106-year history of Wolf basketball.

Of those dynamic duos, four actually went a step further, with both brothers netting 500+ points, while the Whitney boys, Steve and Joe, are the only Wolf bros to both top 600.

And they accomplished that even though Joe didn’t finish his prep career at CHS, instead transferring to Lynden for his senior season, where he led the Lions to a state title.

The great eight, in order by combined points:

Bagby – 1636

Mike – 1137
Jason – 499

Whitney -1331

Steve – 730
Joe – 601

Faris – 1192

Foster – 628
Gary – 524

Syreen – 1144

Mike – 594
Jim – 550

Zylstra -1129

Denny – 602
Jerry – 527

O’Grady – 1083

John – 611
Pat – 472

Marti – 1013

Roy – 551
Frank – 462

Murdy – 889*

Xavier – 482
Alex – 407 … and counting

PS — In the 49-year history of CHS girls basketball, there’s only one sister combo where both players topped 400 points.

Black – 1124

Lexie – 622
Brittany – 502
