Hoops action heats up

We’re a week in and things are starting to pick up.

The first conference clashes for Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams arrive next Friday, Dec. 12, at which point all the squads involved will have multiple games under their belt.

For Coupeville, the week ahead has home games against non-conference foe East Jefferson — the mashup of Port Townsend and Chimacum — set for Tuesday, before the first road trip of the season three days later.

Those Friday night fracases will pit the Wolves against Orcas Island.

As we head into week #2 of the high school hoops season, a look at where things sit through Dec. 7:

Help Wolves shoot ‘n score with toy drive

Get ready to rumble, for a good cause.

Coupeville High School basketball players are launching their annual toy drive to benefit local youth, and Wolf fans will have multiple opportunities to help the cause.

When you attend CHS hoops games this month, you’ll see boxes in the lobby of the gym awaiting delivery of new, unopened toys.

As usual, there’s also a bit of a side bet to the whole thing, as one box is labeled “Girls”, and one box is labeled “Boys.”

That has nothing to do with which children will receive which toys but instead draws the battle lines between the two CHS hoops programs, as they compete to see which team can collect the most toys.

Last season, the Wolves collected 200+ gifts, and this time around they’re hoping to surpass that number.

There is home games set for Dec. 4, 6, 9, and 16 to grant you easy access to donate.

This year as well, there is a GoFundMe being run for the Holiday House, which is where the toys are dispersed through.

Camp Casey offers hoops action

Camp Casey is hosting inexpensive drop-in basketball sessions for middle and high school students the next three Friday nights.

Cost is just $5.00.

Register today or regret it forever

The clock is ticking and “God’s Chosen Sport” awaits.

Registration for the Coupeville Youth Basketball Association wraps this coming Friday, Dec. 5, leaving parents less than a week to dot their I’s and cross their T’s.

The season runs Jan. 5 through the first week of March.

Cost is $60 per player, and the league is open to Coupeville children in grades K-5.

Hoops schedules dazzle and delight

The sound of squeaking shoes on gym floors is almost upon us.

The first day of practice for Coupeville High School basketball teams is next Monday, Nov. 17, with the first Wolf games set for Dec. 2.

CHS varsity head coaches Megan Richter and Brad Sherman, and their assistants will guide their squads through seasons which run through possibly March.

Currently the Wolf boys have 19 games on the schedule, with their female counterparts down for 18, with the boys (two tilts) and girls (three rumbles) both set to play in a holiday tournament.

Included in that are 10 games against Coupeville’s fellow Northwest 2B/1B League rivals, as the Wolves play 2B foes La Conner, Mount Vernon Christian, Orcas Island, and Friday Harbor twice, while squaring off with 1B schools Darrington and Concrete once.

Write everything down in pencil, as the Wolf girls are expected to add at least one more game, and winter weather can always play havoc with everything.
